Irkutsk International Airport is located at a distance of 8 kilometers from its central part. But at the same time, we can actually consider that the airport is located directly within the city limits.

Story

At the end of June 1925, 6 aircraft landed at the Irkutsk airfield, which were performing a grand flight along the route from Moscow to Beijing. On August 13, 28, a postal and passenger flight was carried out from the airport along the Irkutsk - Bodaibo line on the Yu-13 Mossovet aircraft. This was the beginning of the work of the hydro airport, equipped on the Angara River. In August 1932, the world's largest air route from Moscow to Vladivostok was opened. In July 1933, due to inconveniences with transport links, the main air traffic was transferred to a site near the Red Barracks (the current territory of the modern airport).

In January 1948, round-the-clock regular flights began on the lines Irkutsk - Bodaibo - Yakutsk, Irkutsk - Moscow. In December 1954, by resolution of the Council of Ministers, the airport received “international” status. On September 15, 1956, a Tu-104 jet plane landed at the airfield for the first time on a technical flight from Beijing.

In March 1975, the first aircraft of the second generation of civil jet aircraft Tu-154 arrived in Irkutsk. On April 4, it carried out its first flight to Moscow. On November 11, 1980, an Il-76 landed in Irkutsk.

On December 19 of the same year, a flight was carried out on an Il-76 from Irkutsk to Polyarny. In April 1992, the Irkutsk united air squad was reorganized. Instead, OJSC Baikal Airlines and State Unitary Enterprise Irkutsk Airport were founded. In October 1994, Irkutsk received an International Certificate and was recognized by the Aviation Committee as a suburban airport for international flights. In December of the same year, the terminal building of the international air terminal was put into operation.

In April 2002, the company was renamed FSUE Airport Irkutsk. In July 2004, the airfield again received a certificate for international flights and landings under the ICAO category. In 2005, in Shenyang, the airport management signed an agreement with the airports of Munich, Genghis Khan and Tiaoxian on the creation of AERA - the Euro-Asian Air Transport Alliance. The main goal of the agreement was the development of transfer transportation.

In September 2006, an agreement was signed between Shenyang Airport and the Federal State Unitary Enterprise Irkutsk Airport. In 2007, for the first time, the airport's passenger traffic exceeded 1 million people.

In 2008, the last stage of extending the runway by 400 m was completed. After reconstruction, in 2009, the domestic airline terminal “Crystal Gate” opened. On November 13, a spotting session was held for the first time.

On March 1, 2011, Irkutsk was transformed into OJSC Irkutsk International Airport. In April, the first regular flight from Irkutsk to Munich took place.
