Elena: Last year we were passing through Moscow a couple of days before the opening of the Jam Festival, and we saw the grounds decorated in anticipation of guests. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the festival itself, but I really wanted to. Dear friends who are lucky enough to see the Jam Festival with their own eyes, share your impressions, send photos, write comments.

From August 8 to 17, the International Jam Festival is held in Moscow. This holiday is dedicated to the traditions of its production in different parts of the world. Participants in the celebration come from 15 countries on the planet, as well as 40 regions of Russia.

Thanks to the organized holiday dedicated to Jam Day, Muscovites and city guests can try exotic types of delicacies, as well as enjoy traditional and classic options. There are themed tents in different places in the city where you can taste and immediately purchase the jam you like on the spot. For example, in Novopushkinsky Park you can try unusual jam made from dandelions, eggplants, roses and even pine cones. On the site, which is located on Manezhnaya Square, there is a tent called “Garden of Eden”. Here you will find Thai fruit jam. And the festival organizers invite lovers of Azerbaijani sweets to the “Eastern Bazaar” on Arbat, where they are treated to thorn and dogwood jam.

Especially for the opening of the jam festival in Moscow, the city is decorated with unusual art objects. The main shopping areas are marked with large plastic jars of jam. Thematic painting in the form of honey or berries is done by specially invited artists, and the surface of the jar is varnished to protect it from moisture. Another implemented idea is a huge chef’s head, inside of which there are various utensils - ladle, spoons and spatulas. By visiting this installation at VDNKh, everyone can solve the riddle - what is the cook thinking about?

Festival guests will be amazed and surprised not only by the variety of jams, but also by the interesting, well-thought-out scenario of the holiday. On one of the days of the celebration, “sweet excursions” are organized in the center of the capital. Walking from Arbat to Revolution Square or from Klimentovsky Lane to Krymskaya Embankment, the guide will tell you about the history and traditions of Moscow sweets, capital legends, as well as Russian confectioners.

At each site, both culinary and creative master classes are held daily. For example, on Tverskaya Square, participants in the “Cornucopia” project teach everyone how to make strawberry-shaped decorations from marzipan and present gingerbread cookies with strawberry glaze. And on Manezh Square, professionals show how to properly and quickly prepare chocolate fondue, fruits and nuts in caramel, as well as cotton candy.

Visitors to the jam festival can take part in large numbers in ancient Russian games and activities. Master classes at this time are so varied that every guest will find an interesting and useful activity. For example, you can learn how to decorate napkins, candlesticks, or focus on tasting dough products - gingerbread and bagels.

- Listen, you forgot the jam!
- No, I took it, I took it!
- Did you take it?
- I took it!

All fans of the “moderately well-fed man in full bloom” immediately knew who he was talking about. Carlson! He lives on the roof and believes that on a birthday there should be more cakes than there are candles on it, and that a cake is much better than a dog. And a jar of delicious jam will cure all diseases... Better than two.

Do you think he's the only one? International Jam Festival or Moscow Jam Festival For the past three years, it has been gathering chefs and lovers of this delicacy from 40 regions from all over Russia and more than 15 countries far and near abroad.

For reference
Jam is a traditional dessert among the Eastern Slavs: Russians, Ukrainians (Ukrainian Varennya) and Belarusians (Varenne) - among the inhabitants of Transcaucasia (Azerbaijani Mürəbbə) and some other peoples. Jam is a product that is almost impossible to find in Western Europe and the USA. The dessert is obtained by boiling fruits or berries, less often vegetables, young walnuts, young pine cones and rose petals with sugar (previously, before the widespread use of sugar, with honey) for the purpose of canning.

It is unlikely that you would risk starting your day with a cup of aromatic coffee or tea and chili pepper jam. Wow! They'd probably cheer up! And some famous chefs offer something different at the annual festival of the famous dessert. Here you can find jam made from cacti, rose petals, honeysuckle, pumpkin with lemon, zucchini, pear with vanilla, and even “smoky” jam.

In order to demonstrate their skills in “making jam” and treat all those with a sweet tooth to their favorite delicacy, “Carlsons” from different countries fly to the Russian capital. And now, since 2014, Moscow has been turning into a real fairy tale for several days.

The city authorities do not interfere with such a celebration, but, on the contrary, promote it. After all, the event is aimed at developing folk festivals in Moscow.

As Wikipedia says, jam is an original Russian delicacy that has always been brewed in Rus'.

In the first year of the Festival, jam could be tasted at 19 sites in the city over 10 days. And this is about 230 chalets. In 2015, this figure grew to 22 sites, each of which was thematic: “Garden of Eden”, “Oriental Bazaar”, etc.

Oleanders, palm trees, plane trees - sand figures up to 4 meters high, between which peacocks and pheasants walked. This is how the sites were decorated.

Anyone could try jam prepared according to local traditions from different parts of Russia, as well as from Italy, Azerbaijan, Spain, Mexico, Thailand,…

What can you say about jam made from watermelon rinds, fir cones, green tomatoes, dandelions, ginger with lemon and cacti? The current generation may not say anything, but our grandparents would click their tongues and clutch their heads. After all, what's the use of a dandelion, for example? A weed, and that's all.

Meanwhile, the first festival was distinguished by its highlight - Alexander Pushkin’s favorite jam. “Bersenevskoe jam” is prepared in a special way: gooseberries are picked in the garden on the Bersenevskaya embankment in Moscow, then they are heated, soaked in vodka, and then stored in ice. And only after all these procedures are they prepared in 5 stages.

In addition to tasting at the International Jam Festival, you can also brew a jar of the dessert yourself. And even buy the delicacy you particularly like. True, as practice has shown, no one limited themselves to one jar of jam. Like Carlson!

Culinary, creative and sporting events, unusual master classes and promotions make the holiday very diverse.

This year the Jam Festival and “Gifts of Nature” will be held simultaneously. Therefore, the holiday for residents of the capital and guests will be even brighter and sweeter. From July 15 to August 7, 2016, 22 Moscow venues will be at your disposal.

When I find out about such holidays, I really regret that I didn’t find out about them earlier. Plunge into the atmosphere of boiled berries, fruits, vegetables, pine cones... What could be better for a sweet tooth in the summer? Especially if the summer is spent in the office.

And when I see photo reports and the satisfied faces of the guests, my eyes involuntarily become like those of the cat from Shrek, and a plaintive, like Carlson’s, comes out of my mouth: “Is there still a little jam left?”
