London Heathrow Airport Terminal 4: Arrival - Departure

Heathrow Airport (Heathrow) is located within the city, 24 kilometers west of central London. The airport has 5 passenger terminals and one cargo.

In this article, we will tell you in detail about the passenger terminal No. 4, where several Aeroflot planes make daily flights. The most frequent questions from tourists flying to London for the first time: where to go when leaving the plane, how to get from Heathrow airport to central London and back, what is the metro station to Heathrow, where to see the diagram and photos of terminal 4 of the airport, how to find a tax refund point FREE and other services.

For transfers (connections) and terminal layout see.

Terminal 4 lounges

The location of the halls in the terminal building can be seen on the sign next to the elevator.

At the zero level of the terminal is located arrival Hall (Arrivals). The zero level in England in our understanding is the first floor.

On the first level of the terminal (for us - floor 2) there are support services.

On the second level of the building (floor 3) there is departure hall (Departures).

At the lowest level (-1) is the Heathrow Terminal 4 metro station.

Arrivals hall

Where to go from the plane? The most common answer to this question is that you have to go with other passengers. Another landmark to follow is the Arrivals and Baggage reclaim signage.

Even if you only have carry-on luggage and do not need to collect your luggage, your route will go through the baggage claim area.

Passport control. On the way to passport control, the flow of passengers is divided into two directions: citizens of the European Union follow the "Passports from European Economic Area and Switzerland only" sign, all others follow the "All others" sign.

In addition to the passport at passport control, you must present a LANDING CARD, which you will be asked to fill out on the plane (in block letters and only in English).

If you did not fill out the card on the plane, you will have to fill it out in the queue at passport control. The waiting time in the queue can be half an hour or one and a half: it depends on the number of passengers arriving with your flight, and on the number of flights passing through passport control at the same time.

The passport control officer can ask you several questions regarding the purpose of your visit, time of stay, place of residence and others, depending on the situation. Therefore, prepare the answers and have on hand an invitation, return ticket, hotel reservation or other documents confirming the answers to these questions.

Baggage claim area. If you only have carry-on luggage and do not need to receive your luggage, go to the customs inspection area.

For passengers who have checked in their suitcases for transportation in the aircraft hold, in the Baggage reclaim area, you need to find the carrier onto which the suitcases are unloaded from your flight. The flight number and name are indicated on the information board. In order not to confuse suitcases, compare the number of the luggage tag on the suitcase with the number on the tear-off coupon that you received when you checked in your luggage.

Customs. The entrance to the customs corridors is located in the center of the baggage claim area. If you have declared goods, you must use the red corridor with the "Goods to declare" sign. In the absence of declared goods, you must use the green corridor with the sign “Nothing to declare”. Through this corridor you will enter the Meeting Point.

Meeting area. The photo below shows the area for the greeters of Terminal 4, and on the diagram of the arrival hall (see above) you can see the location of cafes, shops, services and exits to public transport. The diagram also shows the direction (red arrows) where you need to go to get to the metro.

How to get from Heathrow to London

Underground. The most economical option to get from Heathrow to central London is to use the Underground. Taking the elevator from the Arrivals hall to level -1, you will take a small corridor to the Heathrow Terminal 4 subway station.

On the left, in front of the turnstiles, there are machines and a ticket office where you can buy tickets for the metro. There are several options for travel tickets, which are detailed in the article on the metro.

For Oyster travel card holders, it will be enough to check the balance in the machine and top up it if necessary.

The fare on the Oyster card from Heathrow (zone 6) to the center (zone 1) will be £ 3.10 (off peak hours) or £ 5.10 (on weekdays between 6:30 am and 9:30 am). the same route with a one-time paper ticket will cost £ 6 (2017 fares).

From Heathrow to central London there is the Piccadilly Line. Stations in the city center (eg Green Park, Piccadilly Circus, Holborn), where you can change to other metro lines, take about an hour to get to.

The first and last train leaves from Heathrow Terminal 4 at 05:02 / 23:35 (05:46 / 23:15 on Sundays). Six trains leave every hour. They all have a stop at Heathrow Terminals 2,3. They do not enter Heathrow Terminal 5.

TfLRail train, which replaced the previously running Heathrow Connect, departs from Terminal 4 every half hour. On the way, he makes six stops (Heathrow Terminals 2 and 3 Rail Station, Hayes & Harlington, Southall, Hanwell, West Ealing, Ealing Broadway) and arrives at Paddington Station. Travel time - 33 minutes, cost - £ 10.50.

In the Paddington area there are many hotels with relatively low prices and good transport accessibility to central London. You can view prices and book a hotel, as well as see its location on the map below.

If London is not the final destination of your flight, it will be useful to read the article: "How to get from Terminal 4 to Heathrow terminals 2, 3, 5, transfer scheme". There is a diagram with routes between terminals for different modes of transport and information on actions in different situations.

Taxi. Alternatively, you can pre-order transfere.g. in the booking service KiwiTaxi, which gives a number of advantages (reliability, safety, comfort) compared to finding a local taxi:

  • the transfer price will be known before the trip and will not change;
  • you can pre-order child seats and cars for non-standard luggage;
  • the driver will be waiting for you in the arrivals area with a nameplate;
  • if the flight is delayed, the driver monitors the arrival time (no surcharges);
  • it is possible to order any class of car (out of 12);
  • operators communicate in Russian, Russian-speaking drivers are provided.

How to get to Heathrow Terminal 4 from London

After your stay in London, the return trip to Heathrow Airport by tube will no longer raise any questions. You can first study the route of the trip by choosing more convenient stations for transfers. For example, the Green Park station has an elevator for transfers, which is convenient for passengers with heavy luggage. On the metro map, stations with an elevator are marked with a corresponding icon as wheelchair accessible.

Important. Trains on the Piccadilly Line can travel in multiple directions from the same platform. If, for example, Uxbridge is listed as the terminal station on the head carriage and electronic displays of the platform, then this train will take you far from Heathrow. You only need to board the train to Heathrow Terminal 4. The terminal station may contain the numbers of several terminals, but you only need to board the train that mentions Terminal 4. If the train goes, for example, to terminals 1, 3, 5 , then you need to get off at Hatton Cross station and change to the train going to Terminal 4. You will be warned about this by audio messages in the carriage. Information about the terminal station is displayed on electronic displays on platforms and in train carriages.

After reaching the elevators along the corridor, go up to level 2 Departures (departure hall).

Departures hall

If you have purchases that require a TAX FREE refund, do so before checking in your purchases. Reserve extra time to process your return and wait in line (at least half an hour).

TAX FREE refund. To find the TRAVELEX tax refund point at Heathrow Terminal 4, go to f&G zone departure hall and take the elevator (at the end of the hall on the right) from the second level to the first. At the tax refund point, in addition to the completed purchase tax refund forms, you may be asked to show your passport, plane ticket, purchases themselves and receipts for them. Do not move them far away and do not cut tags from purchased items.

Information about tax free refund points in Russia can be found.

Registration area. Check-in desks for Aeroflot flights and baggage drop-off (DROP OFF) for those registered via the Internet are located in zone E of the departure hall.

Important. Transfer from your carry-on baggage to your checked baggage all items prohibited for carriage in the aircraft cabin: stabbing and cutting with a blade length of more than 6 cm, liquids more than 100 g, etc. Otherwise, you risk losing your favorite folding knife, purchased perfumes and drinks.

After checking in and dropping off your baggage, you can go to the pre-flight inspection and control area.

Zone of control (Heathrow security control). The entrance to the pre-flight security zone is located in the center of the hall and is marked with signs “All departure gates” (all exits to the aircraft).

Before passing the control, it is necessary to place liquids, creams, gels and pastes with a capacity of 100 ml or less in a transparent resealable plastic bag (1 bag per person). Packages are available at the entrance to the control area.

In this zone, you and your hand luggage will be scanned, if necessary, they will be inspected, all items prohibited for carriage in the aircraft cabin will be taken away and released into the departure and duty-free zone. While in the departure area, check the electronic boards for messages about your flight. After receiving the information about the gate number and the beginning of landing, try not to be late for the plane, being carried away by shopping DUTY FREE.
