After enjoying the beauty of Karlovy Vary, we decided to visit Vienna. But before that we had to decide how we would get there.

By bus

A friend of mine, who had extensive experience traveling around Europe, suggested the option of taking a bus. There are no direct flights on this route, but Student Agency buses can easily get you to your destination with transfers. Buses run daily at intervals of 1-2 hours until 15:00, and then the flight leaves only at 20:00. Travel time is about 7.5 hours.

Tickets

Tickets can be purchased upon arrival at the departure station Karlovy Vary, Terminál, but they sell out quickly. I always prefer to buy tickets online - it saves time and nerves. Universal in this sense is the official website of the carrier company http://www.studentagency.cz/. Tickets are sold cheaper here, without extra charges, and the procedure for purchasing them is quite simple.

1) Go to the site and select in the upper right corner English language.

3) Scrolling down you will see the exact schedule, number of transfers, availability and price. The price is always the same - 24 Euros 80 cents, if you buy a two-way ticket, the total amount will be 1 euro cheaper.

It will be useful to click on the i icon, where you will see the departure and arrival stations. Buses to Prague (this is where you will change to another bus) leave from the 1st platform of the Terminál station. It is located at Západní 2a, relatively close to the center and looks like this:

We almost confused it with the Tržnice stop, which is located 500 meters from Terminal, a little closer to the center. So be careful if you get there on your own and not by taxi.

4) When paying, pay attention to which platform the connecting flight departs from. Unfortunately, we didn’t do this and almost missed our bus. The transfer takes about 15 minutes, so if you need to change platforms, do not delay this matter. Advice: do not take flights where you need to change buses more than once. It's terribly annoying and exhausting. My friends and I didn’t pay attention to this, which we really regretted.

And one more “life hack”: if the money/time budget for your trip is limited, I advise you to take the bus leaving at 20:00. This way you will save money on paying for an overnight stay and your precious time.

Moving conditions

The buses pleasantly surprised us: TVs, free wi-fi and drinks, toilet. Comfortable seats brightened up the duration of the trip.

The road is acceptable, we were hardly shaken. Finally, you arrive in Vienna at the Busterminal Stadioncenter station at Engerthstrasse 242-244, 1020 Vienna, Austria. There is a metro station U2 (easy to remember by the name of the group:) not far from shopping center Stadion Center, it can be used to get to any part of Vienna.

Taxi

If you have the luxury of getting to Vienna by taxi, it is useful to use the website http://www.karlovyvary.cz/en/taxi. The price is negotiable, the range of machines varies depending on the service department.

Train

There is no direct train from Karlovy Vary to Vienna. The best option– get to Prague and there take the train to Vienna. Read more about this at the link (from Prague to Vienna).

Air travel

Not everything is simple with airplanes either. Again, there are no direct flights, flights with a transfer in Moscow, which is completely strange, inconvenient and long (and also cost at least 25,000 rubles). In principle, if you get to Prague, then from there you can fly to Vienna for about 6,000 per person.

To summarize, I advise you to choose to travel by bus. This is the most economical, convenient and fairly fast option. At least we never regretted our choice.

The hub of Vienna’s art and culture scene is up there amongst the world’s best. The Austrian capital is best known for its many balls (including the world famous Vienna Opera Ball), the graceful Viennese waltz, its famed coffeehouse culture, and superb architecture from yesteryear. Visit the Schloss Schönbrunn, the former imperial summer residence, and the Hofburg (Imperial Palace), the base of the Habsburgs, one of the most influential European royal houses. Take in the brilliance of the Baroque Belvedere Palace, the Gothic St Stephen’s Cathedral and the giant ferris wheel in the Prater, Vienna’s old recreational park.

Things to do in Vienna

  • St. Stephen's Cathedral

St. Stephen's Cathedral (more commonly known by its German title: Stephansdom) is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vienna and the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna, Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, OP. The current Romanesque and Gothic form of the cathedral , seen today in the Stephansplatz, was largely initiated by Duke Rudolf IV (1339–1365) and stands on the ruins of two earlier churches, the first a parish church consecrated in 1147. The most important religious building in Vienna, St. Stephen" s Cathedral has borne witness to many important events in Habsburg and Austrian history and has, with its multi-colored tile roof, become one of the city's most recognizable symbols.

  • Tiergarten Schönbrunn

Tiergarten Schönbrunn (literally, "Schönbrunn Zoo"), or "Vienna Zoo", is a zoo located on the grounds of the famous Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria. Founded as an imperial menagerie in 1752, it is the oldest zoo in the Western world. Today, Tiergarten Schönbrunn is considered and regards itself as a scientifically administered zoo which sees its main purpose as a center for species conservation and general nature conservation as well as in the fulfillment of the education mandate given to it by the legislation. The still preserved buildings of the baroque era, which have been complemented in the last years by elements of modern zoo architecture, still convey a good impression of the 18th century menagerie-buildings after the Versailles model.

  • Kunsthistorisches Museum

The Kunsthistorisches Museum (English: "Museum of Art History", also often referred to as the "Museum of Fine Arts") is an art museum in Vienna, Austria. Housed in its festive palatial building on Ringstraße, it is crowned with an octagonal dome. The term Kunsthistorisches Museum applies to both the institution and the main building. It is the largest art museum in the country.

  • Imperial Crypt

The Imperial Crypt (German: Kaisergruft), also called the Capuchin Crypt (Kapuzinergruft), is a burial chamber beneath the Capuchin Church and monastery in Vienna, Austria. It was founded in 1618 and dedicated in 1632, and located on the Neuer Markt square of the Innere Stadt, near the Hofburg Palace. Since 1633, the Imperial Crypt has been the principal place of entombment for members of the House of Habsburg. The bones of 145 Habsburg royalty, plus urns containing the hearts or cremated remains of four others, are here, including 12 emperors and 18 empresses. The visible 107 metal sarcophagi and five heart urns range in style from puritan plain to exuberant rococo. Some of the dozen resident Capuchin friars continue their customary role as the guardians and caretakers of the crypt, along with their other pastoral work in Vienna. The most recent entombment was in 2011.

Let me start by saying that I like traveling around Eastern Europe; a couple of times I was sent on a business trip to Warsaw, from where, taking a day, I went to Prague and Vienna. Of course, these are not the cities for which one day is enough. On the contrary, it’s so little that when you leave you feel sad, like when you were a child when you came from the sea. It really hurts, you know? :)

Taking advantage of an open visa and finding company in the form of my sister, I went to see what I had missed and have an active rest, rather than running around torn between palaces, castles and museums.
