Kilimanjaro volcano, the highest point of the African continent, is not only suitable for experienced climbers, but also for beginners. To climb the roof of Africa, touch the sparkling glacier at the top and see the sunrise at an altitude of 5,895 meters - this is what many dream about.

Anyone can climb to the top of the mountain - Peak Uhuru (Freedom). The youngest conqueror of the summit was seven years old, and the oldest was 78. This is the largest mountain in the world accessible for climbing. Approximately 20,000 people try to reach Uhuru Peak every year.

Kilimanjaro is very popular among climbers and climbers as a technically accessible, but at the same time quite high and picturesque mountain, which does not take much time to climb, it can be combined with various programs: safari, excursions or just relaxing on the beach.

How to get to Kilimanjaro

The highest mountain in Africa is located in northeastern Tanzania. It has two well-defined peaks. Tanzania has only three international airports: Dar es Salaam (DAR), Kilimanjaro (JRO) and Zanzibar (ZNZ). Usually, before starting the ascent, all groups fly to Kilimanjaro airport, as it is closest to the mountain. Airlines FlyDubai, Lufthansa, KLM and some others fly here.

There are no direct flights from Kazakhstan, most often a route with two changes is offered, the travel time will be from 20 hours one way, the ticket price starts from.

The best time to climb

Climbing Kilimanjaro can be done throughout the year, but the best time to climb the mountain is from August to October and from January to March. At this time, good weather sets in, when there is no rain or intense heat. In cities +20 ... + 30 degrees. Usually hot and dry. Rain is possible occasionally. At the top, the temperature can drop to -5 ...- 15 degrees. Almost all types of climates can be found on Kilimanjaro, you start climbing in shorts and a T-shirt, and at the top you will have to wear warmer clothes.

Physical training

If you have never played sports, but really want to conquer Kilimanjaro, it is advisable to give up smoking and alcohol, as well as start training in basic physical fitness, there is nothing difficult in this. The instructors recommend running, but without fanaticism: you don't have to run a marathon, but it's still worth preparing your heart and muscles. If you can run a distance of 10 kilometers, then climbing Kilimanjaro will not be a problem in terms of physical activity.

Another important component of the ascent is high-altitude acclimatization, which is different for each person. Even experienced athletes are not immune from altitude sickness, so for people without high-altitude trekking experience, we recommend considering programs from six days in the mountains or more. The more days you spend at altitude, the better acclimatization is.

Climbing routes

There are six routes on Kilimanjaro: Marangu, Machame, Rongai, Umbwe, Lemosho and North Traverse, each with its own characteristics.

Marangu - "Coca-Cola" (five to six days)
The first tourist route to be opened on Kilimanjaro. It goes to the top from the southeast. This is the most popular route, as it is the shortest and only one provided with huts. Therefore, most commercial agencies and operators who sell the most budgetary trips, as well as a huge crowd of people who want to conquer the top of Africa on their own, flock here.

Machame - "Whiskey" (six to seven days)

This is the second most popular route, it is one day longer than Marangu, which allows better acclimatization. Machame is enjoying a rapidly increasing popularity, as the probability of climbing to the top here increases due to the lengthening of the acclimatization period. The route begins in the rainforest, passes through all climatic zones and has the most varied landscapes. The downside of this is that several dozen people are constantly in sight.

Lemosho (six to eight days)
This route starts from the east and is considered the most balanced in terms of both physical activity and high-altitude acclimatization. Lemosho is the longest, smoothest and most "exclusive" route. It has the most beautiful panoramas and is best suited for beginners with no high altitude climbing experience.

Rongai (six to seven days)
A lesser known route, starts in the northeast in a coniferous forest and runs near the Mavenzi volcano (the second highest peak in Tanzania). There are usually few tourists on this route, so it is perfect for the high season, when the number of climbers increases significantly. In terms of physical activity and high-altitude acclimatization, it is similar to the Marangu route. Interesting for its picturesque landscapes and the opportunity to meet animals.

Umbwe (six to seven days)
One of the most difficult routes. It starts in the rainforest in the south and has the steepest climb, usually used for high-speed ascents. Umbwe is the shortest and steepest route. Requires good physical fitness and high-altitude trekking experience. Ideal for people who already have high-altitude acclimatization and do not want to waste time on long treks.

North traverse (eight days)
The longest route to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro starts from the east and runs through all the landscape zones. Best for high-altitude acclimatization, but has very long transitions between camps and requires good physical preparation. It is not inferior in beauty to the Lemosho route and is the only route that runs along the northern slope of the mountain. Perfect for people who have already had the experience of climbing Kilimanjaro on other routes and want to repeat the trip with new experiences.

How much is

The cost of climbing Kilimanjaro depends on the route you choose.

Climbing the Marangu route (five days of trekking + two days at the hotel) will cost from 1,540 USD in a group of six or more people, alone - from 1,950 USD. The Machame route (six days of ascent + two days at the hotel) will cost from 1 705 USD in a group of six people.

Climbing the longest route, the North Traverse, will cost from USD 2,241 per person in a group of six or more.

With our guides, you will safely and on time conquer Kilimanjaro along the chosen route, and at dawn on the day of climbing from the top of the mountain, you will observe panoramic views of the African continent!

To plunge headlong into Africa and feel its spirit, we propose to combine the ascent of Kilimanjaro with a safari in national parks: Lake Manyara with thousands of pink flamingos, the Serengeti, famous pastures for artiodactyls, Tarangire with its mighty baobabs and umbrella acacias, and Ngoro - a real "lost world" in the sixth largest crater on the planet, most of the animals of which will never leave the caldera as they are captives of 600-meter rocks.

The perfect continuation of this journey will be a holiday on the paradise island of Zanzibar. Kilometers of white sandy beaches, coconut trees hanging over the clear water and groves of spices will make your vacation truly unforgettable!

Dozens of different routes lead to the top of Kilimanjaro, the most popular of whichMarangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai and Umbwe. The Marangu, Machame and Umbwe routes lead to the summit from the south, Lemosho and Shira from the west, Rongai from the north. In recent years, an 8-10 day route called the Northern Circuit Route has also gained prominence, which circles Kilimanjaro clockwise from west to southeast.

How to choose a route?

Many have difficulty choosing a route. First of all, you need to take into account the scenic nature of the route, its complexity, workload and characteristics of high-altitude acclimatization (see the table below). Elbrus Tours has compiled an overall rating for each route. The cost of climbing Kilimanjaro, more detailed descriptions, estimates, profiles and maps of each route leading to the top of Kilimanjaro, you will find on the pages dedicated to these routes.

Being in Africa and not going on a safari is simply unforgivable! Tanzaniafamous for its national parks, where you can see elephants, rhinos, giraffes. hippos, pink flamingos and many other animals and birds in their natural habitat.

Travel through the park in a convertible minibus. The driver drives slowly so that you can take your time to admire the surroundings and not miss out on anything interesting. The bus stops near the animals so that you can take photos and see them in detail. Usually animals do not pay any attention to guests: the hyena family will be the samebask in the sun, as if no one is looking at them, the rhino will be the samego about their daily business, and the zebras take their time nibbling the grass. Still, you shouldn't get off the bus! It's wild, and predators roam somewhere nearby ...
There is no escape from the monkeys! If, leaving the observation deck to admire the surroundings, you leave a window or door open, the tailed thieves will definitely crawl inside, and it's good if they take away a pack of cookies, not a bag with a passport.
Tanzania has several national parks, and each of them has something unique.

The price includes: all transfers according to the program (beginning and ending in the city of Arusha), accommodation in campsites (large double tents, with a separate toilet and shower), meals, a driver-guide, fees for national parks. For an additional fee, it is possible to change places of accommodation (not a camping, but a lodge or hotel).

Lake Manyara National Park.
The park is located at the bottom of the Rift Valley on the shores of Lake Manyara. Alkaline
lake attracts a large number of birds during the migration period, which feed here on blue-green algae. Thousands of pink flamingos look like a solid pink stripe from afar, and the simultaneous clicking of their beaks and flapping of their wings fills the air with unimaginable hubbub. Besides pink flamingos here you can see pelicans, cormorants, storks, elephants, zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, buffaloes, baboons, blue monkeys and many other animals ...

Serengeti
The oldest and most popular park in Tanzania. Every year you can see a mesmerizing sight here: millions of ungulates sweep across the endless plains of the park, obeying an ancient instinct that drives them 1000 km in search of new pastures.
Here you can meet lions, cheetahs, leopardssleeping on the branches of acacia trees, elephants, giraffes, different types of antelopes, hyenas, jackals, ostriches, secretary bird and many, many other animals and birds.

Ngorongoro crater

This reserve is located at the bottom of a volcanic crater that exploded about 2.5 million years ago. Due to the fact that the bottom of the crater is surrounded by walls reaching up to 600 m in height, it has preserved a unique animal and plant life, protected from outside influences

Useful information about climbing

  • The Lemosho and North Traverse routes combine the best acclimatization and the least traffic. Coupled with stunning views, these routes are well suited for both beginners and seasoned travelers. Due to the remote location of the starting points, the cost of climbing on them is higher than on the rest.

The Machame route is characterized by good acclimatization, picturesque landscapes and lower cost. At the same time, due to its high popularity, the route is “congested”, especially in August and February. Contrary to popular belief, the Marangu route is not the easiest one. Despite the difficult acclimatization due to the sharp difference in altitude between the camps, Marangu remains the most popular (and busiest) route for climbing. Unlike other programs, overnight stays in Marang take place in special cabins, making it a good choice during the rainy season.

  • Weather in Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro volcano is known for its special temperature regime. Due to its proximity to the equator, the temperature in the mountains is determined not by the season, but by the altitude and time of day. For example, at the beginning of the ascent ("tropical forest zone"), the temperature fluctuates between 19 C - 27 C. With the climb, it drops, and in the area of \u200b\u200bUhuru peak ("Arctic zone") reaches -25 C at night and -7 C in the daytime ...

  • At the same time, climbing in the "rainy season" is not without its advantages: this is the only opportunity to see the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro. In addition, the number of other tourists on the routes at this time is much less.

  • Some useful information for anyone planning to conquer Kilimanjaro with the site or other tour operators:

    1. Good physical form is not the key to a successful ascent. Your aspiration, competent planning of the expedition and correct adaptation to altitude (“the process of acclimatization in the highlands”) are much more important.
    2. Don't skimp on equipment. Good quality clothing and a sleeping bag can be critical to the success of your expedition. All necessary equipment can be rented from us.
    3. Expect to go 6-7 days without a shower. On some routes, you can swim in mountain rivers (it is rather cold). You can also rent a portable shower from our company.
    4. The public toilets on Kilimanjaro are far from ideal and can cause some discomfort. You can take a portable toilet on an expedition (available for rent in our warehouse).
  • Average physical fitness is enough for a successful ascent. If you are able to walk 10-14 km in a day at an average pace, you are ready to climb.

At the same time, endurance training (cardio exercises) will be useful for the future conquerors of Kilimanjaro (see). Ideally, you should be able to walk 14-20 km a day without shortness of breath.

insurance is not a requirement for climbing.

Which route to climb to choose?

What is the best time to climb Kilimanjaro?

In short, unlike climbing other mountains (for example, you can conquer Everest only in late April - early May), expeditions to Kilimanjaro go all year round.

Climbing in the “dry” season (July-September / January-February) is more comfortable, as there is less rain in the mountains.

At the same time, climbing in the "rainy season" is not without its advantages: this is the only opportunity to see the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro. In addition, the number of other tourists on the routes at this time is much less.

    Climbing Kilimanjaro FAQ

    General information about Kilimanjaro:

What is the required level of fitness to climb Kilimanjaro?

Average physical fitness is enough for a successful ascent. If you are able to walk 10-14 km in a day at an average pace, you are ready to climb.

Many climbing sites recommend training intensively before an expedition. Our experience suggests that tourists with a normal level of training, with the right approach to high-altitude acclimatization, reach the summit more often than professional athletes who forget about the need for a smooth climb and rush forward.

At the same time, endurance training (cardio exercises) will be useful for the future conquerors of Kilimanjaro (see the training program for climbing). Ideally, you should be able to walk 14-20 km a day without shortness of breath.

If you do not have the opportunity to attend training, pay attention to the 8-9 day climbing programs. Daytime trekking distances are shorter.

How long does it take to climb Kilimanjaro?

Climbing Kilimanjaro takes 5 to 8 days, depending on the route. Special programs (for example, with an overnight stay in a crater) can last 9-10 days.

Do I need to take out insurance?

According to the rules of Kilimanjaro National Park, insurance is not a requirement for climbing.

    (a) cancellation of the trip due to force majeure circumstances
    (b) loss / delay of baggage
    (c) emergency repatriation to the homeland
    (d) emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.

Write to us at and we will help you arrange a special “mountain” insurance.

Do I need to get any vaccinations?

Fortunately, thanks to the tough policy of the Tanzanian Ministry of Health, there are no epidemics in Tanzania. For citizens of developed countries arriving directly from CIS / Europe / North America there is no need to get any vaccinations.

However, if your route passes through one of the countries with a high risk of contracting yellow fever (and you will leave the transit area at the airport, or your wait in the transit area exceeds 8 hours), you will have to get vaccinated and issue a special certificate in advance.

For more information about vaccinations before traveling to Tanzania, see our article Vaccination Requirements in Tanzania or write to us at Our specialists will advise you in detail on all questions.

    What is high-altitude acclimatization?

In short, at the height of Uhuru Peak (5.895 m), the concentration of oxygen molecules per cubic meter is significantly lower than at our usual height. In simple words, you inhale the same amount of air, but there is less oxygen in it.

Realizing that it does not receive the usual amount of O2, your brain tells your body to “start emergency measures” - to inhale deeper and more often, fill your lungs with more oxygen and consume less. This is the process of high-altitude acclimatization.

Sometimes, these processes cause slight discomfort - dizziness, nausea, etc.

If, due to a too sharp climb, the body does not have time to adapt, the consequences of an oxygen imbalance occur - brain and / or lung edema. This is a very dangerous condition that requires immediate evacuation.

Thus, the key to planning your expedition is a gradual and successful acclimatization to altitude.

    Dry season

This time of the year is ideal for climbing, as the weather is more predictable and less changeable: rare precipitation, light cloudiness, moderate wind speed. It's warm and dry all around. Temperatures at the summit range from -5 to -10 degrees Celsius. The rim of the crater is not covered with snow and does not require additional equipment.

    Rain season

It is necessary to take along spare sets of thermal underwear, socks and T-shirts. Precipitation is possible, dense low clouds in the morning and evening, the wind speed is slightly higher than usual. The temperature at the summit ranges from -5 to -15 degrees Celsius. The rim of the crater is usually covered with a layer of snow from 5 to 15 cm, so it is recommended to take with you gaiters for boots (gaiters), mountain boots with a high top and crampons.

For the convenience of our climbers, we regularly upload weather data on Kilimanjaro, providing an up-to-date forecast for every week. You can find detailed information about weather conditions on Kilimanjaro on our website Altezza-Weather.com

  • Text: Ekaterina Konyukhova

For the first time to a height of 2300 meters itself, with a heavy backpack (not on a lift with a board) I climbed in 2015. It was almost the top of Achishkho in Sochi. From there, a stunning view of the beautiful snowy Chugush mountain with a serious height opened up. I looked at her and thought: "How is it?" With these thoughts exactly one year later, in September 2016, I reached the eastern summit of Elbrus (5622 meters), although it would be more correct to say that I crawled. Elbrus was not chosen by chance. Then I already knew about the list of seven peaks - the highest mountains that are located in different parts of the world: Everest in the Himalayas, Aconcagua in South America, Denali in North America, Kilimanjaro in Africa, Elbrus in Europe, Vinson Massif in Antarctica and Kosciushko in Australia.

Seventeen hours - this is how much it took us to climb and descend from the summit of Elbrus. It was the most difficult test of my life, mentally and physically. But, having slept for ten hours in a tent after the ascent, not yet realizing what had happened over the past day, I wrote on Instagram: “Guess what's next? This place starts with the letter K. " Then the thought of the mountains of Kamchatka, Kazbegi in Georgia or Kilimanjaro in Africa was spinning in my head - the first thing that came to mind. The most interesting thing was Kilimanjaro - the highest point of the African continent (5895 meters above sea level). In October 2016, I started collecting information, preparing for the ascent and looking for a team.

You cannot go to Kilimanjaro without an organized group from officially registered travel agencies. Choose a company that has been on the market for a long time and has a lot of real reviews - of course, you should look for them not on the company's website, but on the Internet. A Google search will return those that specialize exclusively in Africa or organize ascents to all the available peaks of the planet. My friend, a world-renowned climber Ivan Dozhdev (he was the first in the world to ascend a seven-thousander in Nepal - the top of Tulagi), recommended to find out the conditions directly from a Tanzanian company. I chose her almost immediately - they could give a discount to the group and to me as its leader.

Learn in advance all the possible ways to climb Kilimanjaro, their pros and cons. There are several routes: Lemosho, Marangu, Machame, Rongai and others. They differ in travel time, beauty of the species, cost and living conditions on the track. I chose the most popular and affordable Marangu; it is also called Coca-Cola because of the relative ease of climbing. This is the only route where people live in huts, and not in tents, and the path to the top is more gentle. But he is the most insidious: due to the fact that the path is designed for only five days, almost half of them do not reach the top - not because they are tired, but because the height does not allow. If you have not hiked above 3000 meters, you should not choose short programs that last less than eight days. You may have excellent physical fitness, but it is impossible to predict how the body will behave in conditions of oxygen starvation.

I still feel a chill when I remember how a pride of lions slowly passed by our car

You can go to Kilimanjaro at any time of the year, but the dry season from June to September is considered the most successful. We walked in early March, before the rainy season. In my opinion, this is a great moment - yes, you can get caught in a tropical downpour, as it was with us one day, but the routes are not loaded. And getting wet to the skin in the tropics is a real adventure. After Kilimanjaro, it's a sin not to go to the best national parks in Tanzania: Serengeti, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro. Wild animals on the loose, often at arm's length, are impressive. I still feel a chill when I remember how a pride of lions slowly passed by our car. In general, it is worth leaving for a safari at least two days, and preferably four. I advise you to end your trip to Tanzania in Zanzibar. Rest on this paradise island with white beaches, amazing underwater world and huge turtles is the best gift for yourself for climbing Kilimanjaro.

Kilimanjaro is a mountain accessible for beginners and even seniors. An ordinary Russian woman, teacher Angelina Vorobyova from Ulan-Ude, at the age of eighty-six climbed to the top of Kili and entered the Guinness Book of Records. All the backpacks will be carried by porters, their services are already included in the cost of the programs, and according to the laws of Tanzania, they cannot be canceled. But, despite the technical ease of the routes, Keely is still almost a six-thousander, and the final ascent to the top and descent back to the assault camp will take about twelve hours. Therefore, if you want to be guaranteed to enjoy the African mountain landscapes, and not curse yourself for choosing such a vacation, start preparing a couple of months in advance - for example, jogging.

Before traveling to Tanzania, you must be vaccinated against yellow fever. If you are traveling to Tanzania from an epidemiologically dangerous country such as Kenya, you may be required to enter the country with an international certificate of vaccination; in other cases it is up to you. I got vaccinated - it works for ten years, and it's very convenient for other travels. You can put it in any vaccination center for one and a half to two thousand rubles. This must be done in advance, at least ten days before departure.

Also worth knowing about altitude sickness is a condition associated with oxygen deprivation. Everyone tolerates it in different ways, and it is impossible to know in advance how the body will behave at altitude. On Elbrus, I felt the signs of illness - headache and general weakness - only at an altitude of 5000 meters, and some members of our group - already at an altitude of 2500 meters. You can start drinking special medications before the trip, but the most important thing is proper acclimatization, that is, a slow climb. That is why I do not advise anyone to go to Kilimanjaro the way we did: on a short route in five days. Yes, eight-day routes are more expensive, but what could be more important than health and wellness? In any case, it is worth consulting a doctor before traveling to the big mountains.

On the way to the top, you will alternate through several climatic zones, so you need to take a variety of clothes - from shorts to a down jacket. I suggest you talk to a smart sports shop assistant for advice on the best trekking boots, membrane jackets, trousers, thermal underwear, and a light down jacket. You can find cheaper equipment in online stores. If you want to save some money, you can find many things on Avito, search among friends or rent them on the spot in Tanzania.

I have already organized the group myself on Elbrus, and this time I also decided to assemble a team of friends and acquaintances. The success of the ascent depends on the physical fitness of the participants and their mood, and indeed in the mountains one wants to be in good company. In addition, when booking a tour for a group, you can get a discount. There were only four of us gathered on Keely - me and three men. I advise you to join small groups: it is one thing to wait for ten to fifteen people each time, and another thing when there are only three or five of you. This definitely increases the chances of a successful ascent, when every stop on the final ascent to the top takes away strength.

Kilimanjaro is not a cheap pleasure. Roundtrip tickets will cost five hundred to eight hundred dollars. Climbing prices can vary greatly from company to company, but usually the shortest Marangu route requires at least $ 1,500 per person in a group of at least six people. The organizing company pays about seven hundred dollars to the state of Tanzania alone so that a foreigner can visit the territory of Kilimanjaro National Park during trekking.

When organizing, make sure that everything is included in the price of the trip: transfers, hotel accommodation before and after the ascent (two nights), three meals a day on the track, an escort team (guides, porters, cook). In Africa, tips for each team member are required, they are always paid separately at the end of the route, and this is an impressive amount: from one hundred fifty to three hundred and fifty dollars per person. If you want, add here the cost of a safari (on average from six hundred to seven hundred dollars for two days) and expenses in Zanzibar (a decent hotel room costs from thirty dollars a day, dinner on average - ten to fifteen dollars, excursions - twenty to sixty dollars ). The prices are completely undemocratic, but you will have full impressions for this amount.

Light made its way through the trees, the further we went, the more confused the vines became, we wanted to breathe in the moist and tasty air all, without a trace

On the first day, by transfer from the hotel in Moshi, we were taken to the entrance to the Kilimanjaro National Park at an altitude of 1800 meters. It took us a while to register at the park, but the porters immediately took our backpacks and went ahead. An hour later, completely light, together with the guide Filbert, we began our journey through the rainforest. The light made its way through the trees, the further we went, the more confused the vines became, we wanted to breathe in the moist and tasty air all, without a trace. Philbert said that we had to walk nine kilometers with a climb of nine hundred and twenty meters. Don't trust the guides when they talk about mileage! It looks like they once calculated a direct path on Google Maps and wrote it on all the signs. The trail is not at all like this road, and each time the path turned out to be longer by two, or even six kilometers.

We walked with inspiration, joked, chatted with the guide, looked at the large slugs along the way and listened to the sounds of the forest. It was felt that it would soon be raining - we quickly got our raincoats, but they did not save us from a powerful tropical rainstorm with hail. My feet instantly became damp and dirty to the knee, clothes under a heavy raincoat became wet, but it was even hot from active walking uphill. The land on the road, which had just been dry, became a red river. Finally we reached the houses of the second camp Mandara Hut at an altitude of 2720 meters and settled in a small hut for four people.

Dinner for the mountains was gorgeous. I remember Elbrus: it’s one thing to cook and set up tents after a long trekking, another thing when everything has already been prepared for our arrival. And although the service makes life in the mountains easier, it does not make it easy - it is still a way out of your comfort zone. At night I went out to look at the stars - when my neck hurt, I realized that I had been standing with my head thrown back for ten minutes.

The second morning began with a gentle dawn, quick exercises and yoga exercises to stretch your back and shoulders. After a quick pack and a hearty breakfast, we left Mandara Hut at about nine in the morning. Yesterday's powerful jungle was melting before our eyes: instead of huge trees, slender trees appeared, and then shrubs altogether. It's amazing how fast everything changes in the mountains: the weather, health, mood, nature around. Along the way, bizarre plants began to appear - a mixture of alpine trees with palms, a lot of herbs and mountain plants. Maybe because of the rapid change in the environment and internal state, in the mountains you feel that you are living for real.

On that day, we walked about fifteen kilometers, climbed a new altitude (plus a thousand meters) and arrived at the Horombo Hut camp at an altitude of 3700 meters. There we were already waiting for warm water for washing and hot cocoa with popcorn and cookies, which came in with a bang. Before dinner, Filbert suggested making another acclimatization hike up to an altitude of 4000 meters - that's another three hundred meters up and about ten kilometers on foot in both directions. We were tired, but still decided to walk to make it easier to take a new height the next day. At the end of the day, we covered twenty-five kilometers and gained an altitude of 1300 meters.

On the third day, we went from 3700 meters to the Kibo assault camp at an altitude of 4720 meters. The path ran along the Mavenzi volcano, and Kilimanjaro was already in front of you. There is almost no vegetation at this height, here is a stone desert. The temperature is about six degrees. One of the members of our team, Lyosha, felt the worst of all - at one of the stops we laid him on a large stone, lifted his legs up, making a crossbar from trekking sticks, and he felt a little better. The rest were energetic, acclimatization was going well: I think the drugs taken the day before played a role. I hadn’t taken any pills until recently, but when my head throbbed unpleasantly at an altitude of 4300 meters, I decided that it was time: there was no other way to relieve the pain in our case. The beauty around and the proximity of the goal slightly compensated for the state of health.

We got to Kibo Hut almost exhausted, drank tea, gave up dinner and went to bed at about four o'clock in the afternoon to have time to recuperate before the final exit. Our rise was scheduled for eleven in the evening, that is, after seven hours. In the camp we were placed in a large room with bunk beds and a bunch of people from all over the world: Malaysians, Europeans, Americans. I felt bad: the pills had not worked yet, my head was splitting, and there was a feeling that the temperature was rising. But sleeping pills helped sleep.

Later, the temperature did rise. At about ten in the evening I woke up with chills, everyone was still asleep. Anxiety seized me: I had to go to the top in two hours, and I didn't even have the strength to get up and brew the medicine. Lyosha returned to the room: he and the guide decided that we would leave at three in the morning. Rest for another four hours is a serious handicap in such a situation. I quickly fell asleep again, driving away the thought that at the top, due to a late exit, there might be bad weather. At eleven in a dream, I heard that the room was coming to life: our neighbors gathered for the ascent, because everyone leaves at midnight as standard. We continued to sleep.

I don't know what happened to us in the last hour. There was a feeling that the consciousness or soul, call it what you want, separated from the body and silently observes from the side

The alarm clock rang at two in the morning. The high temperature, fortunately, did not seem to have happened. We quickly got together, put on all the warm clothes - it’s coldest on the way until sunrise. We had breakfast with pasta casserole, knocked over a mug of coffee, and now the moment of the main start has come. We went out at three in the morning: the headlamp caught a small yellow circle under our feet, it was black and black around, and the sky was strewn with stars - but this time we had no time to look at them. There was one thought in my head: "Pole, pole" - which in Swahili means "Quiet, take your time."

We took one small step every two or three seconds, there were no thoughts - it is easier to walk in a meditative state. I was constantly thirsty, but frequent stops are very tiring and take away precious strength. Therefore, everyone endured to the last, waiting for one of the guys to say: "We need water." Usually it was me, but I think everyone was waiting for these quiet words. We paused for a minute for a couple of sips and continued to move our legs in complete silence. It was difficult to talk, and there was nothing - everyone at that moment had their own experiences. There were bright spots far ahead - the light from the flashlights of the groups that came out before us.

With the sunrise at an altitude of 5400 meters, new forces came. A stunning view of the five-thousander Mavenzi opened up - this is the third highest peak in Africa. But there was no time to admire the dawn: slowly, in zigzags, bending around large boulders, we went up. They say that you understand the value of every second when you are late for a train - it's the same in the mountains. Every unnecessary stop can cause failure: time passes, strength ends, and the weather changes not in our favor. Therefore, Philbert, our guide, unconsciously winced when we asked for another stop, and then encouraged: “Hakuna matata! There is little left, we will all get there. " His goal is to bring each of us to the top. He was confident in us, even when someone had an attack of weakness. I really wanted to sleep, my eyes stuck together, and I sometimes covered them, but I twitched, otherwise I could fall.

Ahead was a pass, beyond which only the sky could be seen - I wanted to believe that the peak was already close, but it was not so. People have already begun to descend towards us - they left the assault camp three hours earlier and had already managed to climb to the top. They were happy, each gave us a sincere and very tired smile and wished us luck.

Finally we did it - we came to the wooden sign "Gilman's Point 5681 m". From here begins an exit to the crater of Kibo volcano, in the distance we saw the legendary Kilimanjaro glaciers. Many people only get there, but this is also a great achievement. We made a big stop for about ten minutes. I again felt a surge of strength, the goal became more tangible. Although Uhuru's peak was not visible from here, the motivation to reach the top grew rapidly. A Russian group was moving towards us, with which we met even below. They wished them luck, but the last of the group whispered: "Be strong, now it will be the hardest." We knew we had to go for about an hour and a half. It would seem that to gain only 200 meters in height, compared to the already passed thousand, this is quite a bit - but the road passed along the edge of the crater, and the ascents alternated with descents. It was very disappointing to go down and lose the cherished meters. What happened to us in this last hour? I do not know. I do not remember. The head was wadded. There was a feeling that the consciousness or the soul, call it what you want, separated from the body and silently observes from the side.

Finally, we reached Uhuru Peak - 5895 meters. Treasured wooden plaque with the inscription: “Africa’s highest point. World's highest free-standing mountain. Wonder of Africa ". For her sake, we flew from different countries for more than a day and walked for another five days. Of course, all this was not for the sake of a photo with a sign, but it was a symbol of my victory: I was able to overcome myself and fulfilled my dream - I visited the top of the African continent. And again I was convinced: I am brave, I am strong and in fact I can do anything. Probably, this is why I am drawn to the top - I want to remind myself that you can cope with everything and any dream can be fulfilled. The main thing is to dare to go forward, taking step by step, not to chicken out and not turn back. The mountains in this are a wise teacher.
