There are 5 international and 4 national airports in Hungary. The main gateway to the country is Liszt Ferenc Airport, formerly known as Ferhidel Airport. The airport is located 16 kilometers from the center of Budapest.

Liszt Ferenc International Airport (Liszt Ferenc Nemzetközi Repülőtér) is the main air hub of Hungary; most tourists enter the country through this airport. It is located 16 kilometers southeast of the center of Budapest. Regular flights from the airport fly to Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America.

Liszt Ferenc Airport consists of 4 terminals, Terminals 1, 2A and 2B are the main ones, while the small Terminal 4 is used for general aviation.

All flights to Schengen countries operate through Terminal 2A; other flights pass through Terminal 2B. Terminal 1 is used for low-cost airlines.

The airport has free Wi-Fi in the waiting and check-in halls, there are also exchange offices, ATMs, and many shops and restaurants.

You can get to the airport by taxi, metro, train and buses.

The second largest passenger flow in Hungary is Debrecen International Airport. The airport is located 5 kilometers south of the city. Due to its close location to the borders of Ukraine, Slovakia and Romania, the airport is considered the “eastern gateway” of the European Union. The airport accepts charter and regular flights. Regular flights connect Debrecen with Munich and Bremen. Charter flights from the airport fly to Bulgaria, Turkey and Egypt.

Sármellék International Airport (Sármellék Nemzetközi Repülőtér), also known as Balaton Airport, is located in the Lake Balaton area. It is located 12 kilometers from the city of Keszthely and 1 kilometer from the village of Sarmellek. The airport gained its popularity as a transport hub due to its close location to the resorts on Lakes Balaton and Heviz.

This airport may be better known by other names, for example, Heviz-Balaton - after the name of the Hungarian freshwater “sea”, from which it is located only 15 km. It is also known as Sharmellek Airport, because that is the name of the village located a kilometer away. In any case, it is Heviz Airport, which has international status, that is considered the gateway to the balneological resorts of Hungary. And not so long ago it also operated regular flights to Moscow - once a week.

Heviz is one of the most popular balneological resorts in Hungary. This resort is named after the lake with warm mineral water, the largest in Europe. The underground source feeding the lake is so powerful that the water in the lake is completely renewed (!) every 28 hours. You can swim in it both in summer and winter, so pack your bags and go ahead and improve your health. Moreover, you can get to Heviz quickly and comfortably by plane, because there is a large international airport nearby.

History of the airport

Heviz Airport begins its history in the 40s of the last century. At that time, on the site of the modern airport there was a military airfield, which was under the rule of the Soviet Union until the 90s. The modern runway, 2.5 km long, was built in 1982. Since 1991, Heviz Airport becomes civilian and comes under Hungarian authority. In 2002 it was awarded international status. Today it accommodates almost all types of aircraft, except the heaviest ones, and offers passengers all the amenities for a comfortable wait for departure.

Tax free

At Heviz airport you can get a taxi free service by going to the counter under the Global Blue sign, but only if you are lucky enough to find the staff there. Opening hours: Sunday 9:30-14:00, all other days the point is closed.
