Buying an air ticket for a child

If you are purchasing air tickets to fly abroad with your child, it is important to remember that children must have their own passport.
  • If a child is included in the foreign passport of one of the parents, and this document was issued on March 1, 2010 and later, then the child may not be allowed to go abroad.
  • If children cross the border of the Russian Federation unaccompanied by their parents, it is necessary to prepare in advance a notarized Consent of both parents to leave. In this case, it is necessary to indicate a specific country; the wording “to all countries of the world” is not accepted.
  • If children travel abroad with one or both parents, proof of relationship between the child and accompanying persons may be required. At the same time, the presence of identical surnames of parents and children, as well as a child entered in a foreign passport, are not proof of relationship. Therefore, when traveling abroad with children, you must have with you originals or notarized copies of documents confirming relationship:
    • Birth certificate if you have the same last name.
    • Birth certificate and certificates of new marriages with a change of surnames if there are different surnames.
    • Document on guardianship, adoption, guardianship.
If you want to take advantage of separate rates for pensioners, prepare your Pension Certificate. The airline carrier may require the number of this document. When flying within the Russian Federation, the passenger must be over 55 years old, outside the Russian Federation - over 60 years old.

To issue an air ticket, you will only need your passport. Please note that the details of the passport on which you will fly are entered into the booking. Accordingly, if you fly abroad, you cannot enter the details of your internal Russian passport on your ticket. You only need to enter the details of the passport you are using on your ticket.

To issue an air ticket for a flight within Russia, you will need the following data: Last name and first name, date of birth, passport number along with the series (ten digits). To issue an air ticket for a flight abroad of the Russian Federation, you will need the following data: Last name and first name (in Latin as in passport), date of birth, passport number along with the series (nine digits), and the date until which the passport is valid.

There is also a rule that a citizen of the Russian Federation does not have the right to buy a one-way ticket without existing reasons to stay in the country he wants to visit. The basis is a residence permit in that country, a document confirming the purchase of a car, a return ticket for another type of transport, etc. Otherwise, you may not be allowed to board the flight at the airport, in which case the airline agency does not bear any responsibility for the air ticket sold.

Please note that many countries require an embassy visa to visit. When purchasing an air ticket, the airline agency selling the ticket is not responsible for its availability.
Transportation of passengers by air, taking into account the immigration requirements of countries, along the route (points of initial departure, transit stops, destination) is carried out according to passport, visa and transportation documents - air tickets, boarding passes, luggage tags, etc.

Passport and visa documents that ensure legal entry into the country of destination or transit through the territories of other states include: visas, identity cards for temporary or permanent residents, refugee documents, certificates of return for one-time trips to replace lost ones, work permits, crew documents, international passports organizations, military IDs, diplomatic and official documents, etc.

A passport is the most common document identifying a passenger, recognized as necessary and/or sufficient when flying domestic or international flights.
For citizens of the Russian Federation when flying
Domestic flights:

  • passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation
  • international passport
  • birth certificate (for children under 14 years old)
  • temporary identity card issued by internal affairs bodies

International flights

  • international passport
  • diplomatic passport
  • service passport
  • seaman's passport (sailor's identity card) and extract from the ship's role
  • certificate of entry (return) to the Russian Federation

If a citizen of the Russian Federation loses his passport outside Russia, a consular office of the Russian Federation or a diplomatic mission will issue an entry (return) certificate that identifies him and gives him the right to return to Russia.

Mutual trips for citizens of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic are permitted according to:

  • general civil or foreign passports
  • birth certificate for children
  • a certificate of entry (return) to the country of citizenship on the basis of the “Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Belarus, the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic,
  • The Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan on mutual visa-free travel of citizens” in the presence of migration cards confirming the right to temporary stay.

For citizens of Russia and Ukraine, mutual trips are possible if:

  • general civil or foreign passports
  • birth certificates for children
  • certificates of entry (return) to the country of citizenship
  • migration cards confirming the right to temporary residence

To return to the Russian Federation or CIS countries, valid entry visas are required.

For citizens of the Russian Federation and CIS countries, travel to foreign countries is in most cases possible if they have:

  • foreign passports
  • entry visas of the destination country
  • round-trip airline tickets with confirmed seats
  • for transit stops along the way
  • air ticket with confirmed seats on the next flight within no more than 24 hours
  • transit visas if you need to go to the city.

For foreign citizens to leave the territory of the Russian Federation and CIS countries, the following is required:

  • passports for international travel
  • entry visas of destination countries
  • transit visas for transit countries
  • air ticket for the next flight out of the destination country, if required.

Foreign citizens entering the territory of the Russian Federation must have valid Russian visas, which must be obtained in advance (before departure to the Russian Federation) at consular offices of the Russian Federation outside its borders.

At international airports of the Russian Federation there are consular service offices, where legal representatives of the Russian Federation consider emergency situations regarding the issuance of visas for the departure of foreigners from the Russian Federation.

Inexperienced travelers may be concerned about various questions, including whether the validity period of the document is important when purchasing an air ticket, which one to use, and so on.

First of all, every passenger should know that they can only purchase an air ticket for a flight with a passport, but which one depends on the destination. It is logical that when traveling within Russia you should use an internal ID of a citizen of the Russian Federation. And for trips abroad - a passport. In addition, there are some nuances:

  • If it is being replaced, then a domestic flight can be purchased using a foreign certificate. They must also accept a certificate of passport replacement; for this it is easier to buy at the ticket office, providing the original.
  • For a child under 14 years old, you can buy it using a birth certificate.
  • A number of countries do not require a foreign passport - these are Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan.

What to look for before buying air tickets

The passenger has the right to purchase a ticket online or at the ticket office at the airport itself. In this case, you need to submit the original or a certificate of its replacement/foreign passport to the cashier. At the same time, you can use it until it expires, i.e. At 14, 20, 45 years of age, plus the first month after your birthday, the ID card is considered valid and can be used to fly within the country.

Important! When purchasing online, they do not always ask for passport information. For example, when traveling in Russia, airline companies are required to request passenger data, as Aeroflot does, for example. What data is needed depends on the airline and flight.

But when purchasing trips abroad, often only a first and last name in Latin is enough, this is how booking forms are filled out on Aviasales or Skyscanner, for example.

The validity of a foreign passport is looked at first of all when receiving a visa; the validity of the passport when purchasing an air ticket must be at least 6 months before expiration. When purchasing a ticket, it is important that the tourist returns to his homeland before the expiration time, even if he is on the plane on the last day. So, which passport should you use to buy air tickets abroad? The answer is obvious - to a foreign passport with an unexpired date.

At the same time, it is possible to buy a ticket without a passport if you have not yet received one. You can enter your first and last name and any data, and after receiving the ID, immediately contact the company to correct them. But this is only possible if the airline is not a low-cost airline and does not have fines or fees for changing data. In the same way, it is possible to purchase a trip for another person if the passport is not yet ready; sometimes airlines allow you to make up to three changes to personal data for free, but you need to check with company representatives.

If a person has dual citizenship and two national IDs, then he must apply the second one when purchasing a ticket to his country.

Note! Sometimes tourists manage to purchase a ticket with an expired passport, but it is unlikely that they will be able to fly on it, even though there are no border guards with dogs on the planes, but at the border the deadline is always checked. For such a violation, the tourist can be fined and immediately sent back to their country.

Is it possible to buy an air ticket within Russia using a foreign passport?

What documents are needed to fly within Russia? Passport! But a change of surname, a planned change of identity card, its loss - all this can stop a person from purchasing tickets. But the law states that a traveler has the right to purchase a flight within Russia using a foreign passport; the main thing is to indicate this when purchasing. Therefore, to the question: “Is it possible to buy an air ticket using a foreign passport?” The answer is yes, they will definitely let you board the plane with this!

If you buy a flight on the carrier’s website, you need to indicate which passport will be used to buy a ticket abroad; usually the system itself will help you choose the required type. All airlines ask before purchasing which tourist they are accepting.

Note! The validity period of any document is checked when purchasing an air ticket, so you cannot buy tickets even within the country with an expired passport.

What passport details are needed for an air ticket?

Any of the following types of passports are suitable for purchase:

  • Passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation;
  • Birth certificate;
  • General civil abroad;
  • Diplomatic identity card of the Russian Federation;
  • Service;
  • National (domestic or overseas) for travel to other countries;
  • Other certificate (for stateless persons, refugees, for persons expelled from the Russian Federation)

Other documents may be required at check-in and boarding, such as a residence permit, military ID, sailor's certificate, national passport, transfer and route information, etc.

From the data, you are usually asked to select the required document, write your full name, number and series of the document - for domestic flights. For foreigners, a simple First and Last Name is sufficient; they may be asked to indicate the year of birth, etc.

Now it’s clear how to buy a ticket abroad; ordinary citizens make purchases using a foreign passport.

Buying air tickets is not as difficult as it seems. The main thing is to have the right attitude and the necessary documents at hand. In order not to constantly search for your data in the necessary pieces of paper, it is enough to photograph or copy the main pages of all documents, so they will always be stored in your phone or computer.

By the way, to avoid losing travel tickets, it is also better to save them in electronic form, so you can show only a screenshot of the purchase with a barcode and a passport on your phone or tablet so that the tourist is allowed on board.

But in Europe, some companies impose fines if the passenger did not print out the boarding sheet on their own; it is worth finding out in advance; most often, low-cost airlines have fines, usually from 30 euros. A printed ticket is proof that the passport has not expired and that the passenger has the required visa for that country.

It often happens that your passport has already expired or you have just applied for your first foreign passport, but here you find cheap tickets. The problem is that you don’t have up-to-date passport information on hand. So how can you book tickets at a good price without a passport?

Three Quick Tips: How to Travel Light

In fact, most foreign airlines only need a first and last name in Latin, as well as contact information (telephone, email, address). It is very rare that a date of birth is requested. You can definitely buy tickets on Lufthansa, EasyJet, AirBerlin and WizzAir without a foreign passport.

It is important to note that some carriers do not allow name misspellings. Mistakes are especially unforgivable for Asian airlines. In countries that use hieroglyphs, changing one letter changes the entire meaning and sound of the word. The strictest in this regard are China Southern Airlines. They have the right to not allow a passenger to board the plane due to the incorrect spelling of their name. Also, Vietnam Airlines does not allow mistakes on the ticket, but allows you to change the data if you pay a fine of 15 euros. However, changes can only be made at the airline's Moscow office no later than 7 hours before departure.

That is, if you are not sure how to spell your first and last name, we recommend using the table.

Transliteration of the Russian alphabet in Latin for a foreign passport

AA TOK XKH

GG NN ShSH
DD ABOUTO SCHSCSH
EE PP KommersantI.E.
YoE RR YY

ANDI UU YUIU
YI FF II.A.

Having dealt with the spelling of the first and last name in Latin, you will notice that some airlines request passport information. What to do in this case?

Is it possible to buy tickets without a passport or issue a ticket using an old document?

The answer to both questions is yes.

You can order a ticket using your old passport. But it is better to note in the note that this is data from an old document. As soon as you receive your new passport, provide your new details to the agency or airline through which you purchased your ticket. In most cases, the e-ticket will not change, but the system at the check-in desk will display the new details. Therefore, it is better to take your old passport with you to the airport.

If you are applying for the first international passport in your life, you can buy a ticket using a Russian passport. But the number of the all-Russian passport is longer than the foreign one. Therefore, enter only the first digits of your passport. At the same time, do not forget to write in the note that you are indicating the details of the Russian document, and, having received your passport, immediately call the agency or airline to change your passport details.

Also, travelers with children often have a question when buying tickets: how to write Roman numerals on the keyboard. The fact is that the child’s birth certificate contains these same numbers. They are very easy to type on the keyboard by switching the language to English and pressing Caps Lock. For example, number 1 is the letter I, number 2 is II, number 5 is V, number 10 is X, 50 is L, 100 is C, 500 is D, 1000 is M.

March 08, 2017

Air travelers have long come to terms with the fact that without a passport, flying on passenger planes is impossible. However, questions about the relationship between these documents arise very often, including among users of our portal...

We publish answers to the most, in our opinion, relevant of them.

Do you need a passport when buying a plane ticket?

To order and purchase an air ticket, you need not the passport itself, but the passenger’s passport data: series, number, last name and first name of the owner, expiration date. It is enough to make a copy of your passport or write down its details. If this data is not at hand, and you need to buy a ticket urgently, you can enter any data, observing the current format, for example, the number of characters in the series and number. In booking systems on the Internet or at an agency, they will sell you a ticket using these arbitrary data, but in the future they must be replaced with genuine ones by contacting the seller. There are usually no problems with replacing data.

Which passport, foreign or domestic, should be used when purchasing an air ticket?

When flying within Russia - an international passport or an internal (general civil) passport if you are a citizen of the Russian Federation. When flying abroad - only an international passport. The exception is air tickets to Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Tajikistan, Armenia; you can fly to these countries with an internal passport.

Sometimes potential air passengers are confused by the fact that some foreign companies do not request passport information when booking and selling air tickets. The fact is that to identify a passenger, they only need the passenger’s first and last name, air ticket number and date of sale. But when landing at the airport, passport data will still be checked.

What to do if your passport is expired?

Definitely: change! An expired passport is not considered a valid document. And under no circumstances should you try to travel with such a passport; you simply will not be allowed on the plane.

Moreover, when planning a flight, pay attention to the expiration date of your passport, even if it has not yet expired. In many countries, the rule is that a passport can expire no earlier than six months after a foreigner enters the country.

What passport details are needed to purchase a ticket?

It depends on the carrier and the place of booking. If the air carrier is Russian, or you buy a ticket on one of the online booking resources (for example, on our portal), you should indicate the number and series of the passport, the validity period of the document, the surname and first name of the passenger (in Latin letters, as in the international passport). At the same time, be careful - one incorrectly written letter can cause a lot of trouble in the future. On the websites of foreign airlines, most often only the first and last name is required.

The ticket was purchased using the data in my old passport, but I have to fly out using a new one, what should I do?

It's okay, there is a way out, and even two. First: the ticket is rewritten and the details of the new passport are indicated in it. If we are talking about an electronic ticket, the service is free, but if we are talking about a paper ticket, you will have to pay, for different airlines, from 150 to 300 rubles. And the second way out is to travel with two passports, old and new. Both must be presented: one to confirm the purchase of the ticket, the other to prove your identity.
