Company "Kvareli Cellar" was created in 2001, on the basis of an old wine and cognac factory. Currently, the enterprise has been completely transformed and meets the most modern requirements of the global wine industry. The latest Italian equipment for bottling and storing wine has been installed. At all technological stages of wine and cognac production, the strictest quality control is carried out, from ripening and harvesting of grapes to bottling of finished products. Using the most modern methods in wine production, we preserve the continuity of the centuries-old traditions of Georgian winemaking. After all, Georgia is the cradle of wine, and the word “Wine” itself comes from the ancient Georgian “Gvino”.

“Kvareli Cellar” is located near the city of Kvareli, in one of the most important wine-growing regions of Georgia, in Kakheti. The company's vineyards are located in the unique micro-zones of Kindzmarauli, Kvareli, Eniseli and Gremi.
One of the most famous natural semi-sweet red wines of Georgia – “Kindzmarauli” – is prepared from Saperavi, grown in the Kindzmarauli micro-zone. In addition to it, “Kvareli Cellar” produces such famous Georgian wines as “Mukuzani”, “Akhasheni”, “Tsinandali”, “Alazani Valley”, “Napareuli”, “Gurjaani”, “Vazisubani”, “Kvareli”, etc.

Rkatsiteli, grown in the Eniseli and Gremi micro-zones, produces a unique Georgian cognac, the production of which uses the classic French technology of double distillation of grape spirits (“Charentes method”). The company is a leader in its own reserves of aged high-quality cognac spirits in Georgia.

Since ancient times in Georgia, wine was served to the table in exquisite clay jugs, which were incomparable works of pottery art. Ceramic vessels for the exclusive wine of the Kvareli Cellar are made in the form of figures of people dressed in national Georgian costumes, or in the form of traditional jugs with narrow necks.

Kindzmarauli is one of the most famous Georgian wines. The drink, obtained from Saperavi grapes, has a semi-sweet taste that is unusual for Georgia. Against the background of the bulk of dry wines, Kindzmarauli stands out like a cherry on a cake. And fans of the Chaif group have probably already noticed that we are talking about exactly the wine that Vladimir Shakhrin poured into glasses.

We were interested in learning more about the drink we already loved, so we stopped at a winery that bears the same name - Kindzmarauli.

Kindzmarauli Corporation is our second wine excursion in Georgia, so there was something to compare with. As on, here they conduct free excursion with tasting. For the most part, the program is the same: the guide talks about the history, the technology of making wine and how great they are and how many awards they have received.

The plant began operating during the USSR, but in 1993 it moved to private property. Today, Kindzmarauli Corporation is one of the largest industries in Georgia. In addition to the wine of the same name, they also produce Makuzani, Kvareli, KiSi, 16/16, as well as cognac and chacha.

Our excursion began with a tasting, where we learned:

  • About the grape varieties from which wine is made
  • How to identify a low-quality drink
  • What products are best to pair with this or that type of wine?
  • How to drink a lot and prevent a hangover in the morning

After the tasting, we went to the production facility, where we were told about the technologies for making wine, shown how it is prepared, where it is aged and stored. It was interesting, but we didn’t learn anything radically new. Almost everything is the same as at the Shumi plant. If this is your first winery in Kakheti, you should enjoy the tour, but if you already have something to compare with, don’t have high expectations.

Excursion to the Kindzmarauli winery

To organize a tour of the winery, you do not need to do anything in advance. Tours are offered seven times a week during business hours from 09:00 to 18:00. All you need is to come to the address: Kvareli village, st. Chavchavadze 55 and ask for a tour on the territory of the plant. The guide may be busy with another group, in which case you will be asked to wait 15-30 minutes.

The tour is free and includes a tasting. The total duration of the sightseeing tour is about 30 minutes. You will be shown the production, cellar and some buildings that are historical monuments.

There is a wine shop on the territory of the corporation where you can buy wine, cognac and chacha. The average cost of a bottle is 15 GEL.

From the excursion I learned

  • Wine from the same grape can be different from year to year. The taste of the drink is affected by weather, environment and the soil in which the plant was grown.
  • The period of natural fermentation of grapes is 12 - 20 days. The maximum possible degree of the finished drink will not exceed 13%.
  • Stronger wines are obtained through additional intervention: adding sugar, yeast or cognac alcohol.
  • In Georgia there is a variety of semi-sweet wine called Kindzmarauli - one of the few semi-sweet wines that is obtained naturally. Fermentation is stopped by cooling, so the grapes are not completely fermented and retain their natural sweetness.
  • The wine is fermented and aged at a temperature of 12 - 17 degrees.
  • Most Georgian wines are aged either in qvevri (large clay vessels buried in the ground) or infused in oak barrels in the cellar.
  • Red wine barrels are disposable, but white wine barrels can also be used to make cognac.
  • Chacha is made from grape pomace left over from wine.

The Georgian variety of wine Kindzmarauli, which was the favorite drink of the head of the Soviet Union Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin, first appeared in the most famous wine-growing region of Georgia today, in Kakheti, in the town of Kindzmarauli, which gave the name to the famous Georgian wine. This village is spread out in the silence of the foothills Caucasus Mountains in the Alazani Valley. The vineyard area totals 120 hectares. This place has wonderful sandy soils that formed here and are maintained due to constant flooding of clean river water. These are the unique natural conditions created a magnificent terroir for the Kindzmarauli wine vineyards.

The history of Georgian wine Kindzmarauli begins in the middle of the last century. In 1942, the best winemakers in Georgia launched a line of a new drink - Kindzmarauli wine. Georgian wine was produced taking into account the best traditions of this region. Selected recipes of local winemakers, compiled over the centuries-old history of the Georgian drink, were reflected in the wine released for the first time in those years. It took more than a century for the rules of the best winemaking to be formed - now they were able to contribute to the formation and transformation of the current drink.

It is worth mentioning the amazing taste of Kindzmarauli wine, which is its distinctive feature. The famous Georgian wine gets its unique taste not only thanks to the unique production technology, but also due to the Saperavi grape variety, from which a wonderful drink is produced. The taste of Kindzmarauli wine is distinguished by velvety and delicate notes of cherry; the sommelier is especially impressed by the pomegranate tones in the bouquet of taste and aroma of the drink. Professional winemakers classify Georgian wine Kindzmarauli as a type of red semi-sweet wine. The strength of the original drink usually does not exceed 12%.

In order to preserve the true taste and aromatic qualities of Kindzmarauli wine, as well as preserving the country's heritage, the Georgian government has taken a number of measures according to which Kindzmarauli wine can be produced in a strictly defined zone. This zone is the Kindzmaraul district, located in the Kvareli region of Kakheti.

True connoisseurs of Georgian wine Kindzmarauli and professional sommeliers believe that the drink should be drunk with grilled meat. But the drink is great in combination not only with meat dishes, but also as a complement to soft noble cheeses, fruit desserts, chicken and fish soups, hot and cold fish appetizers. Therefore, you should not be surprised that Kindzmarauli wine is always a welcome guest at a Georgian feast. In the production of Kindzmarauli wine, a special technique is used, developed for the noble wines of Kakheti. Because of this, the method was called Kakheti. When producing Georgian wine Kindzmarauli, the wine material is processed and then placed in special bottles in which it is aged. These bottles have a cone shape and are proudly called qvevri - this was the name many years ago for vessels of a similar shape in which wine was traditionally produced even before the appearance of the first wineries. The jugs are buried up to their necks in the ground. The capacity of some vessels reaches 500 deciliters. The jugs are buried in the ground to create a constant temperature of + 14˚C. Despite the fact that such a tradition of making a drink has long since sunk into oblivion, it is nevertheless believed that real, full-fledged Kindzmarauli wine can only be obtained using such bottles. In them, as the old-timers say, it fully retains its distinctive properties and excellent taste. In 2012, the Kindzmarauli brand was recognized as the official property of Georgia.

The Kindzmarauli wine variety is known not only for its excellent aromatic and taste properties, but also for the fact that Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin, the “father of all nations” and concurrently the head of the Soviet Union, loved it. It’s probably not worth talking about whether it was the politician’s favorite drink, since there were also some other wines, mainly produced in Georgia, which were highlighted by I.V. Stalin. However, Kindzmarauli wine was brought to him specially from Georgia, where it was purchased from local winemakers. This was in 1941 and there was no industrial production of Kindzmarauli wine yet. Therefore, they bought wine made according to home recipes using an artisanal method. The quality control of wine for Stalin was carried out by representatives of the NKVD.

In 2013, events took place in the world of winemaking that pleased all connoisseurs of good wine. The chief sanitary doctor of Russia, Gennady Grigorievich Onishchenko, lifted the embargo on the supply of Georgian wines to Russia. Gennady Grigorievich explained his decision by saying that wines supplied to Russia from Georgia reach this moment level of appropriate quality. Thus, we will receive a double benefit: we will be able to enjoy the best natural vintage wines of Georgia and we will be able to be confident in their excellent quality.

Wine production in a corporation

"Kindzmarauli Corporation"- one of the largest wineries in Kakheti. Located in the very center of the town of Kvareli and is one of the main producers of the famous semi-sweet wine "Kindzmarauli". Now the plant owns 300 of the 400 hectares of the Kindzmarauli microzone, wine storage facilities, a wine store, tasting rooms, a restaurant and even its own hotel in the center of Kvareli. The plant did a good job of promoting itself and as a result a dense flow of excursions came here. Which, by the way, sometimes overloads the restaurant.

Administrative part of the winery

What is there

"Kindzmarauli Corporation" is a winery that operated back in Soviet times, but in 1993 it was bought into private ownership and modernized. The oldest buildings date back to 1533, and many of them can be seen and touched.

Immediately upon entering from Chavchavadze Street, you find yourself in a building where the store and tasting tables are located. I advise you to pay close attention to the store - there are a lot of different wines here at prices that are sometimes half the prices in Tbilisi, and this takes into account the fact that everything is stored here according to the rules, and not in the conditions of the capital's stores unknown to the world.

You can also take a walk through the production areas. You can touch the Italian tanks with your hands, in which grape juice is turned into the famous wine, and see the storage tanks, which are covered with a layer of foam for thermal insulation. The plant has its own guide who can explain what is used and how. The level of guides at the Corporation varies from year to year. At first there were two of them: cheerful and boring. Then the merry one was kicked out. Then they kicked out the boring one and recruited inexperienced girls. Then they were kicked out and experienced ones were recruited. In 2018, the guides were generally good.

In 2015, the plant expanded its representative part: now there are two large tasting rooms. They pour 4-5 types of wine and tell us something. Once upon a time, all this was conveniently combined with a restaurant, but then the flow of excursions overloaded the restaurant and it lost all meaning. It's not even clear whether it's working now.

Prices for tastings have changed several times during the history of the establishment, and may change again. But the “Corporation” focuses on budget and mass consumers, so tastings here are either free or the cheapest in Kakheti. That's why travel agencies love them.

What are they producing there?

The winery produces a lot of different wines, and due to its long history, it even stocks 23-year-old cognacs. There are approximately three types of cognacs here:

"Kvareli", 5 years old, 13 GEL

"Eniseli", 17 years old, 33 GEL

"Gremi", 15 years old, 27 GEL

There are, of course, “Kindzmarauli”, and “Mukuzani”, and “Kvareli” wine, aged in oak barrels, and rarities like dry “Kindzmarauli” (13%, 22 lari). Among the rare ones, there is a white semi-sweet wine “Kisi”, which is quite competitive with the Rachin “Tvishi”, and costs around 10 lari. There is also a rare sweet wine for Georgia - this is “16x16” from Saperavi grapes. It is aged in oak barrels for 6 months and the result is something absolutely fantastic. In addition to such serial wines, there are special, one-piece wines that cost a lot of money.

Compose Full description assortment would be problematic, therefore, no matter how trite it sounds, it’s worth coming and seeing with your own eyes.

At the same time, one gets the feeling that the administration thinks more about marketing than about wine technology. The tours are good, the stories are good, everything is decorated beautifully, but the wine at this winery is good average level. It is comfortable here for a tourist who loves bright, fashionable packaging, but is indifferent to the quality of the product itself. If you have been to Europe and you have something to compare with, and you are not fooled by the packaging, then you will not be interested here. In addition, local wines are often sent to Russia, so you won’t discover anything fundamentally new here.

As a result, they try not to bring tourists who are well versed in wine here. But for beginners it’s quite good. Unless, of course, they are embarrassed by being in a crowd.

About the name

The winery is called “Kindzmarauli Corporation,” but many travel agencies in their programs call it “Kindzmarauli,” either out of malice or stupidity. The winery itself, of course, is trying to pretend that Kindzmarauli’s wine is its own and no one else’s, but this is just a marketing ploy. With the same success, a Chinese company can open an iPhone store in the center of Moscow. The truth here is that all large wineries make Kindzmarauli wine, and some make it better than the “Corporation”, but tourists sometimes don’t understand this and go to Kvareli, believing that Kindzmarauli wine should be bought at the Kindzmarauli plant.

How to find

The main entrance to the winery is from Chavchavadze Street (house 55), it is clearly visible. Open from 09:00 to 18:00.
