The thermal baths of Miskolc-Tapolca claim to be the most popular thermal baths in Hungary outside of Budapest. And all because they are located in caves. And not artificial, but natural! The caves were formed due to the movement of the very thermal waters for which thousands of tourists come to the thermal resort of Miskolc-Tapolca these days. In the article I will tell you about the advantages and disadvantages of baths, what they are, prices for tickets and services, as well as scams of vacationers and how to avoid it.

History of the baths in Miskolc-Tapolca

The cave baths in Miskolc-Tapolca opened in 1959, but actually have a much older history. Back in the 13th century, there was a monastery located almost at the very entrance to the modern complex. Local monks used thermal water for their needs for three centuries, but abandoned the monastery during the Turkish invasion.

The area received new development at the beginning of the 18th century, again thanks to religious figures. The first thermal baths in Miskolc-Tapolca opened their doors in 1743. The Miskolc-Tapolca resort experienced rapid development at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and in the 20s of the last century it received recognition not only in Hungary, but throughout Europe.

However, thermal baths in rock grottoes in Miskolc appeared only in 1959 - before that, the Hungarians used thermal springs, but did not use caves. Since then, the thermal baths of Miskolc-Tapolca have been periodically reconstructed and expanded: new caves are opened, new pools and effects are introduced.

The thermal baths of Miskolc-Tapolca today are a modern and unique complex, which is divided into two parts.

  1. Thermal baths in rock grottoes and adjacent indoor pools
  2. Outdoor pools.

Please note: in winter, only the indoor part of the thermal baths is open.

What awaits the visitor to the Miskolc-Tapolca cave bath?

Bathing infrastructure: swimming pools and saunas

Navigation in the thermal baths is clear, it’s easy to figure out what’s where. Plus, the bathhouse employs Russian-speaking employees who can not only give hints, but also act as a translator. For example, a friend of mine wanted to get a massage and a bathhouse employee took him to the cashier, where he helped him order the procedure.

Halls and pools within the walls of the cave bath

  • Bathroom (29-30 degrees).
  • Old cave pool (29-30 degrees).
  • 2 thermal pools (33-35 degrees).
  • Roman Hall (32 degrees).
  • Star Hall (32 degrees).

Outdoor pools (open only in warm seasons)

  • 3 children's pools.
  • Large swimming pool.
  • Swimming pool "Shell".
  • Hot thermal pool.

Saunas on the territory of the bathhouse

In a separate room there is a Sauna Park with three Finnish saunas, a hammam and three cabins with an infrared sauna. In the center of the hall there is a small pool with water of 16 degrees, which is ideal for a dip in after the steam room. Around the pool there are lounge chairs with a reclining design.

To visit Sauna Park you must purchase an additional ticket.

Float Spa - zero gravity session

The thermal spa of Miskolctapolca invites its guests to become an astronaut for a while. Another comparison is being in the womb. This effect is achieved quite simply: a person is immersed in a capsule with water from the Dead Sea. As you know, it is impossible to drown in it.

During the 50-minute session, you will float on the surface of water saturated with salt. There are no external irritants inside the capsule. But there is light, sound and aroma (optional) therapy.

According to experts, a weightlessness session reduces the level of stress hormones, increases the production of happiness hormones, and relieves pain and tension in muscles and joints. A session at Float Spa is paid separately.

Composition of water and indications for visiting the bath

I am almost sure that most people visit the Miskolctapol thermal baths not for treatment, but for entertainment. Agree, the opportunity to swim in caves is not provided very often. Moreover, the composition of thermal water in rock grottoes is such that it allows you to spend an unlimited amount of time in it, unlike medicinal baths. Due to this, the cave bath has another big advantage: children of any age can visit it.

The composition of the water of the Miskol-Tapolca thermal baths includes:

  • Calcium.
  • Radon.
  • Metasilicic acid.

The composition of the thermal bath water consists of the following elements

Indications for treatment at the thermal spa of Miskolc-Tapolca:

  • Arthrosis.
  • Arthritis is not in the acute stage.
  • Spinal diseases.
  • Rehabilitation after operations on the limbs.

Important! Be sure to discuss treatment with qualified specialists. It’s not like they read about arthrosis and decided to cure it in a few visits to the bathhouse.

Types of treatment in a cave bath

The Miskolc-Tapolca Thermal Baths offer the following treatments to its guests:

  • Mud therapy.
  • Hydromassage.
  • Massage.
  • Water aerobics.
  • Detox and spa.

The tourist wealth of the region is represented, in addition to the cave bath, unique for all of Europe, by such geographical names as Hajduszoboszló, Mezőkövesd (therapeutic baths), Aggtelek (cave), Tokaj and Eger (wine), Hortobágy (reserved steppe), Mátra, Bükk, Zemplén ( mountains, forests, hunting), etc.

Thermal spa Miskolc-Tapolca. Swimming in caves. Healing water. Outdoor and indoor swimming pools. healing procedures. Massage.

Miskolc, a settlement born during the period of the Finding of the Motherland, today has 192 thousand inhabitants. This is a large city with historical monuments, developed infrastructure, cultural traditions and a rich cultural life, educational and scientific base (Miskolc University). Next to the city (7 km from its center) is the resort of Miskolctapolca, with its unique microclimate, a protected local park, a lake for boat trips and a cave bath, equipped in a natural cave dug with healing thermal waters. Relaxation and entertainment for the hundreds of thousands of guests who come to this resort every year is provided by an open-air swimming pool operating in the summer on an area of 7 hectares with a water surface of 4500 square meters. meters.

The real treasure of the village is the Ozernaya Cave, converted into a cave bath, washed out over thousands of years in solid limestone rocks. This cave was already known to primitive man in ancient times.

The opening of the cave bath in 1959 was preceded by long preparatory work.

In this cave bath, unique for Europe, it is extremely pleasant to swim, dive, enjoy thermal water in a pool created by nature, and breathe clean air, free of any pollution.
The healing properties of the bath are explained by the pleasant healthy climate of the cave, as well as the warm karst waters.
Health tourism. Thermal spa Miskolc-Tapolca. Swimming in caves all year round. Healing water. Outdoor and indoor swimming pools.

This thermal water is not as dense as individual medicinal waters (the concentration of all salts in the thermal water used in the bathing complex does not exceed 1000 mg/liter), so many people value it very highly.

In this water - unlike some denser healing waters - you can swim without limiting yourself in time, you can experience all the water effects that exist here.

Their number is now increasing: new galleries, natural adits and halls are being added to the familiar cave pools. The “Ball Hall” awaits lovers of fun surprises, and in the huge Jacuzzi located next to it, guests are massaged by underwater jets. A little further, floating with or against the current along an “underground river” driven by a hidden mechanism, we find ourselves in a pool located in the oldest and most beautiful section of the cave.

In the Cave Bath, however, one should not refuse open-air bathing and the spectacle of the Tapoltsay park: if the cave was created by nature itself, then the lake pools and the light and elegant shell of the roof bending over them are the creation of human hands.

There are no summer or winter seasons in the Cave Bath. It is always spring in the cave galleries, regardless of the street heat or severe frost.
In the outdoor pools, enjoying the embrace of warm thermal water, you can admire the bright rays of the winter sun, in summer, sun loungers are placed around the pools, and cave galleries offer relief from the summer heat. Bathing in the cave can be complemented by a sauna and individual treatment procedures. A unique microclimate, clear blue water, magnificent views and individual treatment procedures help guests leave the Cave Bath rested and improved in their health. They can tell their friends: this is a miracle...

Entertainment, excursions and attractions in Miskolc
The center of the old town is the town hall square, which is a typical, and, I must say, very beautiful and harmonious example of a Hungarian city of the 18th-19th century.

The main architectural style is Baroque, according to which the houses are elegant and light. The city's many churches are not only a treasure for believers, but also a magnet for tourists.

Miskolc is an important center of the Protestant religion in Hungary, on a hill Awash is home to the largest Reformed church. Representatives of other religions are not forgotten: the Orthodox Church with a magnificent iconostasis with 88 icons, a synagogue with a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, a parish Catholic church not only operate in the city, but are its significant attractions.

Diosgyori Castle (Diosgyori var) is located on the western outskirts of the city. It traces its history back to the depths of centuries, remembers many battles and battles.

In the 14th century, the castle was well equipped and luxuriously decorated, as it was the favorite place of King Lajos the Great. Nowadays, a historical panopticon operates here throughout the year, with each of the four towers of the castle dedicated to a specific exhibition, and every summer there are many holidays, festivals and theatrical historical performances.

Lillafured- a famous climatic resort in the vicinity of Miskolc. Lillafüred, surrounded by mountains, is located in a beautiful place worthy of an artist's brush. The most famous building here is the magnificent Palace Hotel, built between 1927 and 1930.

There is a good one in Miskolc zoo, which offers a wide variety of animals. The zoo does not have many exotic ones, but there are many wild animals living in Europe, as well as domestic and local Hungarian animals. Children usually really like it there.

A romantic cave lake, clear water, summer all year round, a lot of fun and health benefits - this is how visitors to the Miskolc-Tapolca baths in Hungary describe it. This balneological resort is located 5 km from the center of Miskolc, in a huge park, and has been known for its miraculous hot springs since the times of the ancient Romans. Miskolc-Tapolca is able to capture the imagination of even seasoned swimmers: its reservoirs are located right in natural caves, and, traveling from one to another along the “underground river”, you can find many different pools and interesting grottoes. The temperature of the thermal spring creates a special microclimate, thanks to which it is warm here in any season, and the special composition of the water, unlike most other balneological resorts in Hungary, allows you not to limit yourself in time and have fun all day long.

What to see, where to visit

Miskolc is distinguished from many modern balneological resorts in Hungary by its ancient history - it was founded before our era and played an important role in the Hungarian state, which it has not lost to this day. You can find many attractions here, most of which you don't have to go far to discover - the historical city center is famous for its old Baroque and Classicist buildings and the Diosgyőr fortress, built in the 13th century. Nearby there are other attractions that the residents of Miskolc are proud of: for example, the 15th-century Gothic Calvinist church with a beautiful wooden interior or the Greek Orthodox church with an iconostasis from 1783, the tallest in Central Europe.

Springs and healing

Miskolc-Tapolca water has a high content of iodine, bromine, calcium and other beneficial elements, which make it effective in the treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system and cardiovascular system, as well as respiratory diseases.

Doctors working in the baths will help you navigate the numerous bodies of water and tell you which of them and how exactly a certain disease should be treated. If there are no contraindications in the baths, you can visit the sauna, mud baths and massage treatments, go to aquafitness, or simply relax all day in the jacuzzi and pools, relieving stress by swimming.

Miskolc-Tapolca is the most common thermal resort in Hungary. And at the same time the most unusual: only here the baths are located underground, in caves formed thousands of years ago.

This natural wonder and the name of the resort, which exudes warmth, are an excellent reason to spend a holiday with children in Miskolc-Tapolca. Everything is conducive to this: the climate, the opportunity to sunbathe and swim, and excursions for every taste. Our review will help you plan family holiday at one of the best thermal resorts in Hungary.

Where is Miskolc-Tapolca?

The city of Miskolc is located in the north-eastern part of Hungary, on the Sajó River, at the foot of the Bükk mountain range. The administrative center of the county of Borsod-Abauj-Zemplén.

The fourth city in the country by population. Large industrial center. The distance from Miskolc to Budapest is 183 km, to Nyiregyházy - 114 km, to Debrecen - 115 km, to Csop - 193 km, to Beregovo - 200 km.

Doesn't sound too much like the description of the resort? Correct: the resort area of Miskolc-Tapolca is located on the outskirts of the city, in a large, quiet park. If you don’t go to the center of Miskolc (and the tourist infrastructure of the resort part is quite self-sufficient), you may not notice that you are vacationing in a rather large city.

Vacation with children

Sunny weather, clean air, river, mountains, an ancient fortress, an amusement park, good hotels - you will find this whole set in Miskolc-Tapolca. The resort has created almost ideal conditions for relaxing with a child.

As a bonus, you just need to add that this is perhaps the only thermal resort in Hungary where even kids can splash in the baths.

And children enjoy swimming in the underground pools: the rough, lumpy vaults of the caves are in no way inferior to the intricate design of the water parks.

Traveling to Miskolc does not take much time - just 2 hours by train from Budapest and you will find yourself at the resort, the sedate rhythm of which immediately invites relaxation.

But you shouldn’t think that when you come to Miskolc-Tapolca with children, you will be cut off from the civilized world. The resort area has its own hotels, restaurants, shops and entertainment for children.

With an infant, you don’t have to leave the cozy park at all, finding everything you need at the hotel. But if you are planning a holiday in Miskolc-Tapolca with older children, then you will probably want to visit the city’s museums and neighboring towns, each of which is remarkable in its own way.

When is the best time to go?

Like all thermal resorts in Hungary, you can relax in Miskolc all year round. And here, like nowhere else, you can truly recommend a vacation at any time of the year.

The temperature in the baths remains consistently warm in both hot and cold weather, and you can swim there without going out into the cold air.

But at the same time, a high season still exists in Miskolc-Tapolca. From late spring to early autumn, the largest number of tourists flock to the resort, and at the same time housing prices rise significantly.

And yet exactly summer is the best time to relax with a child. In the warm months, you can sunbathe near the outdoor pools, enjoy the fresh air and take excursions to all the nearby attractions.

Weather and climate

The climate of Miskolc-Tapolca is temperate continental, as is the case throughout Hungary. Most of all, it resembles the climate of Budapest: warm summers without high temperatures, clear and dry autumns, mild winters with fog and rare snowfalls, early spring.

The average summer temperature in Miskolc is +19°C. But in June, the thermometer often rises to +23-25°C, and in July-August the hottest time, by local standards, begins: +26-27°C.

However, it is during the summer months that the greatest amount of rain occurs - you will always have to keep an umbrella with you. By September, the daytime temperature drops to +15°C, although the weather quite often pleases with warm days when thermometers show +22°C.

Until the end of autumn, the temperature does not drop below zero, and the first mild frosts occur in December. The coldest month is January, but winter cold is relative: -1-3°C is unlikely to become a serious obstacle to walking.

In March, as a rule, winter completely recedes, and on fine days you can see +10°C on the thermometer. Warming continues in April-May, but in the second half of spring Miskolc usually gets wet with rain. The record holders for precipitation are May and June.

The mountainous terrain in which the resort is located affects daily temperature fluctuations. Once the sun goes down, it gets significantly colder outside. Even in summer, the night temperature stays at +15-18°C, and at the end of spring and early autumn it can drop to +10°C.
