The decision to build the fountain was made in 1734, when the 25th anniversary of the defeat of the Swedish troops near Poltava was celebrated. This most important event of the Northern War took place on the day of St. Samson, which gave rise to an allegorical depiction of a memorable battle in the form of the struggle of the Old Testament hero Samson with a lion. The sculpture was supposed to symbolize Russia's victory over Sweden, whose coat of arms contains the figure of a lion. In order to obtain a water column of maximum height, at the request of the fountain master P. Sualem, a special wooden pipeline more than four kilometers long was laid from the Babigonsky pond. In 1736, all work was completed, and the fountain soared to a height of 20 meters.

During World War II, Samson's sculpture was stolen by the Nazis

Already ten years after the installation, it became necessary to replace the cast from lead group "Samson Breaking the Lion's Jaws". One of the largest Russian sculptors M. Kozlovsky, using a composition of the 18th century, created a new model in classicized forms, where the heroic theme sounded with special force. In 1802 Kozlovsky's "Samson", cast in bronze, was installed on a pedestal made of granite blocks. At the hero's feet, as before, eight dolphins were frolicking, and in the niches at the foot of the pedestal were four half-figures of lions, located at the cardinal points. By July 1806, the cascade appeared in an updated form.

During the Second World War, the sculpture of Samson was stolen by the Nazis. From the surviving photographs, the sculptor V. Simonov recreated it, and already in the 1947 season the powerful figure of "Samson tearing the lion's mouth" reappeared on its pedestal in the bucket of the Sea Canal.

Matamorphoses are a fountain of splendor in the form of a huge head. Metalmorphosis is the work of the Czech sculptor David Černý. It is 7.6 meters high, weighs 14 tons and is made up of over 20 stainless steel plates that rotate independently and periodically line up to form a massive human head. This sculpture fountain is very similar to the sculpture built in honor of the writer Franz Kafka in the Czech Republic, only the latter does not have a fountain. You can compare the two fountains by watching the top and bottom video.
