The best beaches in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is rightfully considered one of the most heavenly places on Earth. There are many beaches with a sandy coast, incredibly clear and clear water, shady palm trees and amazingly beautiful landscapes. Lovers of exotic and active beach holidays should definitely visit this place.

The top ten includes the best beaches in Sri Lanka for winter recreation. Ranked based on traveler reviews.

10. Bentota

The most famous beach in Sri Lanka is not a cheap vacation spot, as a rule, newlyweds come here from all over the world for a romantic honeymoon, or people with wealth to celebrate round dates. Bentota is an ideal destination for water sports.

9.

Included in the top ten beaches in Sri Lanka. In this Sri Lanka resort, you will find golden sandy beaches, coconut trees, diving centers, sailboats, surfing and other entertainment. During diving, you can see the remains of sunken ships. Tennis courts and golf courses are specially equipped for vacationers. All hotels are comfortable. Fans of excursions will not be bored - they can visit the neighboring Kalutara with the Buddhist temple of Gangatilaka Vihara and the city of fishermen Hambantota, take a boat trip along the canals and capture the local beauty.

8.

Sri Lanka's most premium beach resort. There are no guesthouses and, as a result, no backpackers, but there are five-star hotels and expensive restaurants. On the beaches (they stretch from the city of Beruwell for more than 100 kilometers) there are umbrellas, sun loungers and tables, on which dishes with fresh fruit flaunt. Ayurvedic and spa centers are open at many hotels. In addition to Russians, rich families from India and the Netherlands often stay in Beruwela (after all, Ceylon was a Dutch colony for a long time). The beaches here are wonderful: white sand, clear azure water and palm trees. By the way, the waves are not high here, and the water is warm all year round.

7.

Long picturesque sandy and absolutely clean beach. Many comfortable hotels have been built here and a huge amount of entertainment is offered, both on land and on water: windsurfing, diving and kite surfing. The latter is quite relevant, since the sea here is usually rough and wavy.

6.

One of the best beach resorts in Sri Lanka. It is a great vacation spot and is one of the top 10 surfing spots in the world. A huge sandy beach, safe even for inexperienced swimmers, extends to the high cliff of Crocodile Rock, from where you can often see wild elephants. Arugam Bay is surrounded by jungle, lakes and wet wetlands lie nearby, due to which a special microclimate and low rainfall have been formed here.

5.

A huge and beautiful beach, it consists of several conventional parts. You can swim on it, but not everywhere, because somewhere there are very big waves, a joy for surfers, and somewhere there are fishing boats. The sand is wonderful, fluffy, the color of coffee with milk. Hikkawuda is very clean. On the coastline, among the palm trees, there are hotels and guesthouses, cafes and restaurants.

4.

Small but very picturesque beach in Sri Lanka. Dikwella is one of the most tranquil, idyllic beaches on the island that honeymooners love to visit: their honeymoon will be breathtakingly beautiful and secluded. The length of the beach is 3 km. Dikwella Beach is one of those places where swimming is comfortable and pleasant. The western part is best suited for this, since the waves are relatively large in the center, and there are many stones in the east. You can also go snorkeling here. In the village of the same name, there are practically no large hotels: only one hotel complex and several guesthouses. Local cafes offer seafood dishes. The entire southern coast is very picturesque, it is cut by bays of all stripes, rocky in places, large boulders protrude onto the coast, against which waves break.

3.

It is one of the most beautiful beach destinations in the south, and although well known, the resort is never overcrowded with tourists. The beaches here are very beautiful and very deserted, and sometimes you might think that there is no one on the long coast except you. But at the same time, this is one of the most unfortunate places for swimming due to the constant large waves, perhaps the most undulating in the entire south. This is just an ideal place for those who only want to enjoy the ocean and doing nothing, but active people here can seem very boring. The tourist infrastructure is poorly developed here. There are plenty of hotels here, but there is no separate tourist area. There are few restaurants and cafes for tourists.

2.

One of the three best beaches in Sri Lanka. Mirissa is very beautiful, there is snow-white sand, palm trees hang over the ocean, green along the entire coast. The beach begins and ends with hills, as if limiting the territory. For lovers of walks, there is an opportunity to walk in the direction of Matara, along the coastline for a very long time. On the way, you will see 2 more coves with a calmer ocean, expensive hotels, a hill that is entirely composed of iron ore. Just behind the hill is a village that is carved right into this hill, all red.

1.

Completes the ranking of the best beaches in Sri Lanka. According to the Discovery Channel, this beach is one of the ten best in the world. The resort does not have large tourist complexes and luxury hotels, most of the tourists here are "savages" who come for a month or more. This is an absolutely safe place for swimming: the entire coast is sandy, there are no strong currents, and the entrance to the sea is gentle. It was once a wild beach, but tourists quickly made their way here, and in high season it is quite crowded. True, this did not particularly affect the beach infrastructure. Of course, there are some beach cafes, umbrellas and sun loungers for rent, and even a shower and toilet. However, the feeling of a "wild beach" persists to this day.

See the best beaches in Sri Lanka Ceylon is a huge island surrounded on all sides by the ocean. There are so many beaches in Sri Lanka that even a month would not be enough to see them all. We will tell you and show you the beaches that travelers choose when coming to rest in Sri Lanka on a tour or on their own.

Endless beaches in Sri Lanka

The most popular beaches in Sri Lanka

What most of the beach in Sri Lanka has in common is yellow and coarse sand, high waves, and the length of the coastline. At first it may seem that all the beaches of Sri Lanka are very similar to each other. Looking closely, you notice some differences. For example, somewhere there will be tall palm trees, and moving to the south of the island, the water becomes bluer.

Big ocean waves in Sri Lanka are always and on all beaches. Only a few closed small bays allow you to swim with minimal waves, or even without waves at all.

From Negombo all the way to Hikkaduwa, beach chairs are rare and there are no beach restaurants at all. Beach entertainment is not developed in Sri Lanka. Jet skis were only seen in Mirissa. But locals suggest boating or fishing.

Harassment of tourists on the beach in Sri Lanka is practiced everywhere. Traders, guides, scourge fights. It is best not to communicate with these people, to completely ignore them, then they will fall behind themselves.

All the main beaches of Sri Lanka are marked schematically on the map:

Let's start in order from north to south.

Negombo

Negombo beach is very long, not crowded, but far from the cleanest in Sri Lanka. Suitable for those who want to quickly get to the nearest beach from the airport. Negombo is definitely not the place to go for your entire vacation hoping to swim in the ocean. Read in our report.

On housing in Negombo, we have a blog with good reviews. From hotels within walking distance from the coast, the following successful options can be distinguished:

  • Heritance negombo
  • Cloud 9 Boutique Hotel

Marawila

Marawila beach is located 20 km north of Negombo and is like its continuation. However, the views are a little more picturesque, there is more greenery here, and even fewer people. Where to stay in Marawila:

  • Club palm bay
  • Solomon Beach Hotel

Wadduwa

Wadduwa Beach is very secluded and non-touristy. Apart from fishermen, there are few people here on the shore. The beach is visually beautiful thanks to the tall hanging palms. read in our review.

There are enough hotels in Hikkaduwa, prices vary, from cheap guesthouses to four and five-star hotels with their own beach. See our selection. We lived in a hotel. New and inexpensive 4-star hotel, located almost in the center, across the road from the sea.

The most successful options for relaxing on Hikkaduwa beach:

  • Hikka Tranz by Cinnamon
  • Coral Sands Hotel
  • KAI Hotel

Where can I book an airport transfer?

We use the service - KiwiTaxi
We ordered a taxi online, paid with a card. We were greeted at the airport with a sign with our name. Drove to the hotel in a comfortable car. They have already told about their experience in this article

Unawatuna

Unawatuna Beach is the most popular beach in Sri Lanka. And for good reason. Unawatuna has the bluest water and the smallest waves. Suitable for families with children and even for those who cannot swim. Moreover, it is a very developed area. ...

There are many inexpensive housing. The most popular options for a stopover in Unawatuna are:

  • Calamander Unawatuna Beach Resort
  • SHORE by HOPPA
  • The Lodge Unawatuna

Koggala

Koggala beach is a few kilometers of deserted ocean beach with yellow sand and palm trees. Can be attributed to wild beaches, despite 10 hotels. It is unsafe to swim fully, since large waves and the beach are not monitored outside the hotel grounds. ... Where to stay:

  • The Fortress Resort & Spa
  • The Long Beach Resort

Weligama

Weligama beach is more of a surfer beach, Weligama Bay is pretty and party-going, there is definitely a zest. Selection. Good stopping options:

  • Weligama Bay Marriott Resort
  • W15 Hotel Weligama

Mirissa

Mirissa beach is good in everything. Beautiful coastline, unique views, clear water. There is an opportunity to fight with tall waves or find a secluded corner where there are no waves. ...

Guesthouses prevail from housing. Most of them are close to the ocean. In Mirissa, we lived in a guest house for $ 30 per day, a 3-minute walk from the beach. We've compiled a list by reviews and locations.

  • Ocean Reach Holidays
  • Citrine mirissa
  • Blue Whale Holiday Hotel

Matara

The beaches in Matara are wild, urban, fishing and muddy. The Matara coast is more for contemplation than sailing. Nobody cares for it properly, so the beach is public in every sense of the word. To stop in this area, it is better to choose the neighboring villages - Mirissa or Dikwella.

Dikwella

Dikwella beach is not the most popular beach in Sri Lanka. The beach is little known among tourists. Large deserted bay. There are waves in Dikwella, as elsewhere in Sri Lanka, but nearby there is a picturesque beach without Hiriketeya waves, which can be reached on foot. From accommodation in Dikwella, it is worth considering these hotels:

  • Crystal Resort Dickwella
  • Dickwella Resort and Spa
  • Dickwella Beach Hotel

Hiriketiya

Hiriketiya Beach is a secret beach. It is a cove, popular with surfers, but there are places for swimming without waves at all. One of the few beaches in the country where it is cozy, calm and blue water. ... Hotels on Hiriketiya beach:

  • Pepper hiriketiya
  • Dots bay house
  • Salt House

Tangalle

Tangalla beach is preferred by advanced tourists, because this beach is one of the farthest in Sri Lanka. Despite the fact that he does not stand out too much for any features, many appreciate him for his privacy. In general, this is an ordinary beach for Sri Lanka, like dozens of others. Long, with yellow sand, big waves and not the best choice of hotels. But there are several good housing options here:

  • Golden pearl tangalle
  • Sea View Tourist Inn
  • Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort

Which beach to choose in Sri Lanka

The best beaches in Sri Lanka are Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna and Mirissa. For most tourists, they will be the best choice. These beaches are good in their own way, each of them can be used for an unforgettable vacation. You can also add Bentota to this list, but this area is underdeveloped, there are few cafes and tourist infrastructure.

  • Little known and non-touristy beaches are usually unkempt and littered. There are many fishermen and dogs on them.
  • If you go to areas such as Negombo, Wadduwa, Kalutra, then you should check in only in a good expensive hotel and be ready to eat in a hotel restaurant, as there may be nothing nearby.
  • In addition to rest in the hotel and excursions, tourists in such places have nothing to do and nowhere to go.
  • The distant beaches of Sri Lanka, such as Dikwella, Tangalle or Hambantota, are suitable for lovers of the deserted ocean coast. There you can find many hotels where there is nothing, no cafes, no houses within a radius of several kilometers. Not everyone will like this, so keep this in mind.

The best beaches of the island of Sri Lanka: photos, description

The tropical island of Sri Lanka is world renowned for its stunning long sandy beaches framed by emerald coconut palms. The water temperature in the ocean around the island does not change much throughout the year, within + 27-30C, as well as the air temperature + 28-30C. Sri Lanka is a unique island, you can swim there all year round: in summer in the east, in winter in the west. The beaches of the southwest are the most popular holiday destination with a developed infrastructure; the infrastructure of the east coast is much less developed. The beaches of the south are dominated by yellow sand, while the northeastern beaches are mostly white sand

Further, not all are collected, but the most popular among foreign tourists and the beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka. Among the list of brief characteristics in the description, the "length of the beach" is given, which is not identical to the "bathing area", in this case the length of the beach is given on the map.

When comparing beaches, it is worth paying attention to the level of development of the infrastructure of the beach and the area: the higher the level of development, the more garbage will be produced by infrastructure facilities. It is also worth remembering that the closer the beach is to a large city, the closer it is also to city sewers. The best beaches in Sri Lanka are located at a distance of at least 30 km from the international airport.

Map of resorts and beaches of Sri Lanka

List of the best resorts in Sri Lanka

Negombo is closer than other resorts to Colombo airport - the distance to it is about 30 km. This is very convenient for tourists who have had a long flight. The place is more famous for its conditions for fishing than for a beach holiday: the coastal waters abound with a large number of fish, their migration period falls on the high tourist season. The large seafood market is one of the most famous attractions in Negombo. There are reefs in Negombo, which makes the place popular with divers.

Beach holidays in Negombo are mediocre: the water is muddy, some parts of the coast are occupied by fishermen, where they lay out tackle and dry fish. There are few umbrellas and sun loungers, as well as water activities, the only exceptions are expensive hotels.

Nevertheless, Negombo is considered one of the best resorts in Sri Lanka due to the convenient swimming beaches that stretch along Lewis Place. In addition, there is an optimal choice of accommodation and many photogenic fishermen and beautiful landscapes.

Negombo can be visited all year round, but it is very damp in May and October - November.

Hikkaduwa is located 100 km from Colombo and is the leader in attendance. Divers, surfers, snorkelers, young people and family people come here. Water fun and humble nightlife have made Hikkaduwa the liveliest and best resort in Sri Lanka.

Here are the longest beaches in Sri Lanka and many hotels of different categories. The beaches are ideal for surfing - there is almost always a strong wave. Early in the morning, huge turtles appear near the shore, which are so accustomed to people that they take food straight from their hands.

In the center of Hikkaduwa there is a coral park, where you can ride a boat with a transparent bottom or go snorkeling, order a boat trip. There are several Buddhist temples in Hikkaduwa, the most famous and popular among them is located on a small island. The entrance to the temples is free, not including the fare. Excursions to the mines where precious stones are mined that can be bought are popular among vacationers.

A great time to relax in Hikkaduwa is from November to April.

Wadduwa is 35 km from Colombo. In this Sri Lankan resort you will find golden sandy beaches, coconut trees, diving centers, sailboats, surfing and other entertainment. During the dives, you can see the remains of sunken ships.

The best time for an active and beach holiday in this resort is from October to March.

The village of Bentota is located south of Colombo - 65 km (2 hours drive), between the mouth of the river of the same name and the ocean. It is considered the elite and best resort in Sri Lanka, a favorite beach destination for romantics and those seeking solitude.

Here the largest number of comfortable hotels, uncrowded clean beaches and lush jungle nature, the famous mangrove forests grow in this area. For its guests, the resort offers a lot of entertainment - sea and river fishing, exciting safari on the river with crocodiles, excursions to the turtle farm, yacht trips and much more. There is a center for diving enthusiasts.

The best time for a beach holiday in Bentota is from October to April.

The small resort village of Unawatuna is located 120 km from Colombo. Once it was a fishing village, now the rapidly developing resort is only slightly inferior in popularity to Hikkaduwa and Bentota.

This place is especially loved by tourists who have a rest on their own - there are many guesthouses at an affordable price in the resort. The main advantage of Unawatuna is the calm water in the ocean. The central beach is located in the bay, and coral reefs protect from strong waves, so they are happy to relax here with children.

All tourist infrastructure has been created. Vacationers can go diving or snorkeling, fans of excursions can visit the neighboring resort - Galle. But this place is not for solitude: the beaches of Unawatuna can be quite crowded.

The optimal time for rest is from December to April. Too rainy in May and October – November.

Due to their remoteness from the airport, the resorts of the northeastern coast of Sri Lanka are less popular than the southwestern ones. Nevertheless, Trincomalee is considered one of the best resorts in Sri Lanka and the most beautiful place on the island: there is a deep-water bay, discovered at one time by Admiral Nelson. Trincomalee itself is unique in terms of architecture - there are Muslim buildings, Buddhist and Hindu temples. You can get there by night train from Colombo (9 hours on the way) or by bus (7 hours).

According to some vacationers, Trincomalee beaches are the best in all of Sri Lanka. Rest is calm, there is little entertainment here, infrastructure is still under development, most hotels are inexpensive, bars and restaurants are of the same level.

The natural beauty of this place is surprising - tall palms and lemurs walking freely. Not far from the coast is a coral island, which was chosen by divers and snorkelers, there are hot springs a few kilometers away.

It is best to plan your trip between March and August, as it is too rainy in November-December.

List of the best beaches in Sri Lanka

All the beaches of the island are sandy, many of them are surrounded by coconut trees and other tropical plants. The best beaches in Sri Lanka are located on the southwest coast and are not too far from each other.

Bentota Beach

The most famous beach on the island, and according to numerous reviews of enthusiastic tourists, it is also one of the best for a beach holiday. It is here that newlyweds prefer to spend their honeymoon. A wide coastal strip, palm trees, complete seclusion are the main advantages of this place.

Great location and almost complete lack of infrastructure. Since the beach is quite far from Colombo (5 hours by bus), it is visited by single tourists or those who took an independent trip around the island.

Unawatuna Beach is located in the village of the same name. The coastal strip is not as wide as in Bentota, but the calm waters off the coast make it extremely attractive. The sand is very fine and clean, part of the territory is occupied by cafes and hotels, the rest is available for swimming and water activities. There are shallow waters for swimming with babies.

Hikkaduwa Beach

The longest beach line in Sri Lanka. Orange sand and turquoise water, along the line there are numerous cafes and guesthouses. Strong waves have made this a favorite spot for surfers, but there are relatively calm areas near the Chaaya Tranz hotel. There are no sun beds there, there is enough shade from the palm trees, many come there to swim with children. Thanks to all this, Hikkaduwa Beach is ranked among the best places for beach holidays in Sri Lanka.

Tangalle beach complex has long and persistently been included in the lists of the best beaches in Sri Lanka. This is the perfect place for a secluded getaway: you can walk a mile and not meet a single person. You can find any accommodation. You can get to the place by bus from Colombo (6 hours).

It is difficult to predict where and who will like it better. Sri Lanka is still an amazing island, where every place deserves special attention and admiration, so it is rather difficult to compile a list of the best resorts and beaches in Sri Lanka, claiming to be objective. However, we hope that our review will help you choose a place to stay and you will have a great time.

Sri Lanka is a tropical island surrounded by the deep blue waters of the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal. There are so many beaches in Sri Lanka that it is simply impossible to tell about all these beaches in one article. However, we have selected the best beaches in Sri Lanka, which are the most popular among tourists. Most of the hotels, guest houses and tourist accommodation are located in the area of \u200b\u200bthese beaches.
The main attraction of Sri Lanka for tourists and locals is undoubtedly the beaches. Of course, the island has a lot of interesting things, including unique historical and natural attractions, national parks and much more, but still Sri Lanka would hardly have enjoyed such popularity among tourists if it were not for its beautiful beaches.
The most popular beaches in Sri Lanka are located on the coast, starting in Negombo, 37 km north of Colombo, and ending at Hambantota in the south of the island. The length of this coastline is 273 km. Currently, most of the popular resorts and hotels are located precisely on this stretch of the Sri Lanka coast.
South of Colombo, which is also called the "Gold Coast", passes into the resort area, which includes the resorts of Lavinia (a suburb of Colombo), Wadduwa, Kalutara, Beruwala, Bentota, Induruwa, Kosgoda, Akhungalla, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Koggala, Weligama, Mirissa , Dondra, Dikwella, Tangalle and finally Hambantota.
Sri Lanka's best beaches on the east coast of the island include Nilaveli, Kuchaveli, Marble Bay, Sweet Bay and Dead Man's Bay with its magnificent harbor. These beaches are located north of Trincomalee. To the south of this famous city are the beautiful beaches of Passikuda, Kalkuda and Arugam Bay.
Now is the time to introduce you in more detail the best beaches in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka beaches on the map

Unawatuna beach

The wonderful Unawatuna Beach on the southern coast of Sri Lanka is visited mainly by water sports enthusiasts and tourists who wish to relax in an area with a true Sri Lankan atmosphere. Unawatuna Beach has a wide selection of cheap accommodations, and there are many opportunities for swimming, surfing, snorkeling and diving. The tourist infrastructure is very well developed here. However, Unawatuna Beach still retains its romantic and somewhat crazy atmosphere. It is a truly beautiful beach with golden sands, clear blue waters and slightly swaying coconut palms that contribute greatly to the idyll. Sometimes you can see sea turtles laying eggs here, but it still takes a little luck. Unawatuna Beach is protected by a coral reef, so there are usually low waves. This makes this beach a great swimming place all year round. The reef near the beach is a great spot for snorkelers as there are many different species of fish in all colors to be seen. For practicing divers, Unawatuna can offer the Rangoon shipwreck site. Not far from the beach, at a depth of 30 meters, there is a ship that sank almost 100 years ago. Several diving centers on Unawatuna Beach offer tours to the site.

Hikkaduwa beach

A white, fine sandy beach, tall tropical palm trees, deep blue water and coral reef, a sleepy and atmospheric fishing village - this was what tourists came to Hikkaduwa on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka for in the 1970s.
Hikkaduwa Beach is still a paradise that is great for surfers and divers, for sun worshipers. But something has changed: mass tourism has arrived here, so many resort hotels have appeared in the Hikkaduwa Beach area, and this beach is no longer a hippie paradise. However, the village of Hikkaduwa has retained its charm and the local people have retained their hospitality.
Today, Hikkaduwa attracts tourists not only with its beautiful beach, but also with its many activities, good nightlife and excellent hotels.
Among surfers, Hikkaduwa Beach is very popular all year round. Beginners and professionals alike will find the right waves for themselves here. Due to the presence of a coral reef, Hikkaduwa Beach is also a well-known diving site. Unfortunately, most of the corals have died and the reef is no longer as impressive as it used to be. It is possible that the corals will recover, but it will take a long time. Until then, snorkeling and diving enthusiasts can enjoy a variety of colorful fish. If you don't want to dive into the water, you can look at the many species of fish, snails, mussels and other ocean fauna and flora on a glass bottom boat trip.

Mirissa beach

One of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka is located on the south coast of the island. This is a gorgeous crescent-shaped golden sandy beach with clear turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. There are several bungalows under the slender coconut trees where you can stay for a while. Accommodation in these bungalows is offered at reasonable prices. The relaxed atmosphere invites you to swim in the ocean and enjoy a variety of water sports, as well as sunbathing and simply relaxing. The sunset at Mirissa Beach is breathtaking and incredibly romantic. It is said that today Mirissa Beach with its tranquil atmosphere is what Unawatuna Beach once was. Many different travelers come to Mirissa Beach, including honeymooners and families with children, as well as those seeking peace and tranquility. Water sports enthusiasts will also appreciate this beach. For example, many surfers come here, who mainly choose the western part of the beach, where especially impressive waves appear. On the other hand, the eastern part around the so-called parrot rock is great for snorkeling.
Blue whale and dolphin watching is a special pastime at Mirissa Beach, especially between November and April. This "whale watching walk", which usually starts in the early morning, will allow you to see up close the largest mammals on the planet.
Mirissa Beach is located between two cities, Matara and Welligama, about 35 km from Galle, which can be reached by bus in about an hour.

Koggala beach

There is a very picturesque and wide sandy beach about 14 km south of Galle. It is not crowded but well worth a visit. Here, fine-grained, yellowish shiny sand alternates with quaint rock formations and towering coconut palms, providing a wonderful beachside idyll. The beautiful coastline and developed infrastructure with many hotels are additional advantages of Koggala Beach. Many young couples often spend romantic days on this beach, but there are also good conditions for families with children.
At Koggala Beach in Sri Lanka, you can observe the traditional fishing technique characteristic of this island. While many places in Sri Lanka use small motorized wooden fishing boats for fishing, fishing in the Koggala Beach area is still done in the traditional way for southern Sri Lanka. According to this method of fishing, the fisherman climbs onto a bar attached to a pole driven into the water. This allows him, firstly, not to scare away fish with his shadow, and, secondly, it is good to see fish in the water.
It is also worth noting that there are two towns near Koggala, Ahangama and Midigama, the latter of which is known as a surfer's paradise.

Ahungalla beach

In the southwest of Sri Lanka, just 15 km from Bentota, there is Akhungalla Beach, which is considered one of the most beautiful in the whole country, probably because almost nothing is being built here. Because of this, the beach and its surroundings still retain a completely natural atmosphere. The only buildings to be found among the palm trees on this beach are small fishing houses. The sandy beach is about 15 km long, ideal for walking as well as swimming. However, in some places there are currents that can be dangerous. It is important to keep an eye on the flags on the beach. A red flag means swimming is not recommended, but not prohibited. However, you must remember that there are no lifeguards here.
Ahungalla Beach is famous for its small crabs that quickly disappear into the water or into small burrows in the sand when they hear footsteps approaching. The area is also home to turtles such as the caretta caretta, whose footprints can be seen in the sand on some days. Usually no one sees the animals themselves.

Balapitiya beach

The coastal town of Ambalangoda is known mainly for Sinhalese masks, the traditional production of which is in great demand here. The city also has very beautiful beaches that are also worth visiting. These beaches, such as Balapitiya Beach, are great destinations for true nature lovers. There are no hotel blocks here, everything is natural and undeveloped. Nearby beaches such as Hikkaduwa and Bentota are much more popular with tourists.
The sand on Balapitiya Beach is white and fine-grained and the palm trees make this beach a tropical idyll. Here you can take a walk along the coast of the ocean, relax in the shade of palm trees or simply swim in the Indian Ocean. In the evening, the fishermen return to the beach in their old, sometimes painted wooden boats and unload the fish.

Bentota beach

Bentota Beach is located about 50 km south of Colombo on the western coast of Sri Lanka and is a good example of the island's popular seaside resort that grew out of a once sleepy fishing village. Since the 1980s, Bentota has been an important tourist destination on the island. At the same time, it is still a relatively calm place, especially when compared to Hikkaduwa.
The reason many tourists visit Bentota is the gorgeous sandy beach. Indeed, Bentota Beach looks like the picture: fine and white sand, countless palm trees and azure water. Different tourists come to Bentota Beach, because it is suitable for everyone. Tourists come here for swimming, surfing, sailing, diving, snorkeling, and deep sea fishing. Since the water at Bentota Beach is very shallow for a long time, the beach is also suitable for families with children. However, swimming can be a little dangerous during the monsoon season. Red flags in the water mean swimming is not recommended. In the southern part of Bentota Beach, waves are generally higher, while the water in the northern part (also known as Bentota Lagoon) is relatively calm. Many famous hotels can be found here. In general, finding accommodation in Bentota is not a problem as there is a large selection of hotels and guesthouses in different price categories.

Negombo beach

The city of Negombo, located 35 km north of Colombo, is an important tourist magnet, mainly because of its beautiful beaches. Already in the 1970s, Europeans came here to enjoy the relaxed beach life that laid the foundation for a booming tourism industry. This is why Negombo is also called the cradle of beach tourism in Sri Lanka. Even today, the beautiful Negombo Beach is one of the most important and most famous on the island.
Today Negombo offers a variety of hotels, guest houses and bungalows with varying levels of comfort and prices. In addition, the city offers a lively nightlife.
With a length of 8 km, the very wide Negombo Beach is quite safe for swimming and is therefore popular with families with children. You can swim here all year round, but you still need to keep an eye on the flags and conditions on the beach.
Various water sports are also offered at Negombo Beach. For example, diving is very popular here as the beach is next to an interesting coral reef. In addition, there is the Kudapada shipwreck not far from the coast.
Since Negombo Beach is only 10 km from the International Airport, it is often a stopover at the beginning or end of a trip to Sri Lanka.

Rekawa beach

This natural and almost deserted beach in southern Sri Lanka is fantastic in its beauty. There are no big hotel complexes, no noise, no fuss. There is simply this perfect beach with fine sand and beautiful clear water. Rekava is an ideal place for a relaxing break, swimming, sunbathing or walking. Sea turtles can still be seen at Rekawa Beach, which return here every year to lay eggs. Already in 1994, a program for the protection of these turtles, supported by the United Nations, was established here. Today these turtles are under international protection. If you're lucky, you can see how these fascinating animals lay their eggs. Sometimes you can even see how little turtles leave their eggs and go to the ocean. These observations are usually conducted in the evening under the direction of the Turtle Conservation Project (TCP). The best time to observe is from January to April, as well as full moon nights throughout the year.
There are several guest houses and small hotels on Rekawa Beach, which is about 10 km from Tangalle.

Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is a surfer's paradise. Lunar Bay near the Muslim city of Pottuville is considered one of the best surfing spots in Sri Lanka. The tsunami in 2004, as well as the civil war, practically did not touch this place, so today Arugam Bay looks impressive. What is special is that the monsoon in Arugam Bay is barely noticeable, so you can relax here almost all year round.
Despite the tourist attraction of the Arugam Bay area, the local population has so far successfully defended the area from the construction of large hotel facilities. Therefore, today this area has retained a natural and relaxed atmosphere and attracts mainly nature and water sports lovers.
The shallow sandy beach lined with palm trees offers quite good conditions for swimming. The surrounding area is very beautiful: the forest contains a variety of exotic plants, as well as wild elephants and monkeys.
You will find inexpensive accommodation on the beach, but there are also chic bungalows. Therefore, we can say that the beach in Arugam Bay offers accommodation for every taste and budget. Most of the residential buildings are located right on the beach. During the high season, which lasts from May to November on the east coast of Sri Lanka, upscale accommodations are almost always occupied, so it is advisable to book in advance.
If you want to come to Arugam Bay for surfing, then you can book surfing lessons right on the beach or rent a board and other equipment.

Nilaveli beach

Perhaps the most popular beach on the east coast of Sri Lanka is Nilaveli Beach, located about 15 km north of Trincomalee. The white, soft and shallow sandy beach and clear waters of the Indian Ocean remind many visitors of the beaches of the Caribbean. The legendary beach is equally popular with bathers, sunbathers and water sports enthusiasts. Nilaveli Beach is also suitable for families with children, as there is a gentle and even entrance to the ocean (or rather, the Bay of Bengal), and the waves are rarely very high here.
Naliveli Beach is also known as the starting point for whale watching trips. If you're lucky, you can spot blue and sperm whales on this tour. Nilaveli Beach also offers tours to Pigeon Island, which attracts with its excellent diving and snorkeling conditions, as well as its breathtaking beaches and magnificent coral reefs. Between May and September, the visibility in the water is greatest here.
On the Nilaveli beach itself, there are accommodations of various levels of comfort. In general, however, it will be difficult for tourists to find suitable low-cost accommodation here. There are very nice bungalows for rent right on the beach.
It is worth noting that the military site is located right on the Nilaveli beach, so you can meet many soldiers here. Despite being close to the military exclusion zone, Nilaveli Beach is quite calm and quiet. It is also a very clean beach.
