Fishing rods for winter fishing are float and non-float. Using a float rod has its drawbacks. For example, you need to know exactly where the fish is standing and walking. In addition, the presence of a float prevents the bait from playing, thereby reducing the number of bites. At the same time, the float has its advantages. He reacts more sensitively to a bite, denoting even the weakest attempts. There is no need to keep the rod in your hand all the time. You can fish in this way from two holes in the neighborhood at once. The float should be sunk into the water by 2-3 cm to prevent freezing into the ice crust.

Winter floats differ in size and approach to fishing from their summer counterparts. The presence of a bright top makes it easier to follow the bite. Homemade foam floats are painted in bright colors by anglers with ordinary women's nail polish. Water-based acrylic paints are also suitable for this purpose. Although there are supporters of pure white floats, and they are also right in their own way.

There are four types of floats and, accordingly, four attachments to the fishing line.

Difficult to change

1. With internal line channel. Plus: fits snugly to the fishing line. Minus: to change the float, you have to break the fishing line.

2. Attached at the bottom. Floats without a ring are easily changed to another. Those in which the fishing line passes through the ring are more difficult to replace - you have to tear the fishing line.

Easily changeable

3. With side slot. This is useful for quick float changes.

4. With detachable antenna.

Equipment for winter fishing rods

As in the case of summer fishing, a number of factors are taken into account when preparing equipment: whether there is a current in the reservoir and what kind of fish the equipment is being prepared for.

Option 1. With a regular sinker and hook.

Figure 1 shows fishing on a stagnant pond.

In Fig. 2, fishing in the current, in which the sinker necessarily sinks to the bottom. The distance between the hook and the nearest sinker is 4-7 cm.

Option 2. With mormyshka and hook.

In Fig. 3 tackle in still water. A fishing line is passed through the mormyshka, fixes it, and then the hook is attached to the leash.

In Fig. 4, fishing in the course. The fishing line is not passed through the entire cavity, but only through the upper ring of the mormyshka. In this case, the mormyshka will lie on the bottom, and the leash with the hook will not tangle the main line.

Option 3. With a hard leash.

In Fig. 5, the leash is made of stiff fishing line with a light hook. In this case, the hook goes a little to the side and becomes more noticeable.

In Fig. 6, another leash with a light plastic mormyshka that does not sink is tied to the same variant.

Tackle for winter fishing on a float

Fishing line. Line diameter from 0.1 to 0.17 mm. This is the optimal size, since a thicker line will be noticeable in the water, and a thinner one can break during a fight. A thickness of 0.17 mm will be enough to stretch the specimen by several kilograms.

Mormyshka. Should have a long shank of the hook and color in dark, inconspicuous shades. Do not use a reelless mormyshka.

Hook. To easily put on a bloodworm (or other nozzle) and remove the fish, the shank of the hook should be long.

Winter float loading. It is necessary to properly load the float in advance, in a tall vessel with water. Moreover, two options are possible:

1) if fishing is carried out in cold weather and the surface of the water is constantly covered with a thin ice crust, it is better to keep the float submerged to prevent it from freezing. To do this, several shots are added until the float is immersed 2-3 cm under the water. In this case, the bright cap of the float will signal a bite;

2) if fishing is carried out with a float on the surface of the water, then you will have to load it so that only a thin tip sticks out of the water. The sensitivity of the gear will be noticeably higher.

How to choose a float for ice fishing

In stores, the choice of floats for winter fishing is extensive. But from the whole variety, choose the most correct float, it must meet the following criteria:

  • it should not be sliding, since the tackle will freeze very quickly and the float will no longer hold it at the desired depth;
  • made of dense foam that does not absorb water;
  • must be completely painted or at least varnished so that ice does not stick.

A winter float for cautious fish should not be barrel-shaped, it is better if it is oblong with a thin tip, then it will not create resistance for the fish, and the bite will be clearly visible.

Nozzles and baits for winter fishing

Moth bundles. The most popular bait for winter fishing is bloodworm. But when pierced with a hook, it becomes empty and turns pale. To avoid this, prepare bunches of bloodworms at home. To do this, collect 4-7 bloodworms in a bundle and tie them with a thin nylon thread, for example, released from stockings. Put the bundles in a matchbox and store it in your bosom while fishing. When fishing, put on the hook, prying the thread. So that the end of the hook is not noticeable, put another bloodworm on it.

  • bloodworm;
  • maggot;
  • insect larvae of light shades;
  • bark beetle

The process of fishing in winter

Winter fishing with a float differs significantly from summer fishing with a float rod.

Hole drilling. With the help of a fishing ice ax, a hole is made in the very place where the desired fish stands. So that nothing interferes with the float, the surface of the water is cleared of fine ice chips. From time to time, this procedure is repeated using an ordinary kitchen slotted spoon.

Float loading. At least two pellets are used. Moreover, the smaller one is located 5-7 cm from the hook with the nozzle. Due to this, the sinking of the bait will be slow, and the fish will react more readily to it.

Bite. If the float submerges under water, emerges or moves to the side, resolutely hook. With your left hand, you need to hold the fishing line in a taut position, the fishing rod is removed onto the ice to a place cleared in advance, and then the fight goes on - smooth and without sagging line, so that the fish does not break the tackle with a sharp movement.

After catching the fish, put a new bait on the hook and lower the fishing line into the hole, passing it through tightly clenched fingers in a glove to knock off a thin crust of ice that has had time to form in the cold.

How to make your own ice fishing float

Already having experience in winter fishing, few people refuse to make an excellent winter float at home with their own hands. It may turn out even better than the store ones.

1. You will need a dense foam. From it you need to cut blanks with blunt edges. To determine the capacity of the float, test the first cut copy in a jar of water. Next, you can determine the size of all the rest.

2. The perfect bodies of future floats are machined from blanks with a knife.

3. To make the surface as smooth as possible, you can walk with a small file or sandpaper.

4. A mount is made from the bottom of the float. A hole is melted with a hot pin or needle, and a fastener made of thin copper wire is inserted.

5. For reliability, it is covered with a drop of glue.

6. Prime the float and paint it a bright color.

When choosing a fishing rod for, you need to decide on which reservoir you will be fishing and which fishing method you prefer. Depending on the conditions of fishing and fishing preferences, tackle for the horned horned varies greatly.

Fishing rod for the current

If you are going to catch roach in the course, keep in mind that in addition to it, bream, sopa, and even bream can also bite. Therefore, the equipment of a winter fishing rod for a river must be durable.

Elements and construction of gear for the current:

  1. Udilnik. Choose a model with a separate handle and legs. This tackle is stationary, so special lightness is not required here.
  2. Coil. It is desirable that the reel has at least some kind of friction in case of insurance when playing a large specimen of a pecked roach or a bream that has come on the bait.
  3. Fishing line. The main cord for the winter river is a monofilament of 0.16-0.18 millimeters, preferably dyed. Unlike a transparent fishing line, it is clearly distinguishable on the white snow of a winter reservoir.
  4. Nod. Large and bright, visible from afar. At the same time, he must be very sensitive, allowing you to notice the slightest bite of the fish. The best for flow are plastic balls with springs.
  5. Sinker. Depending on the current, its weight fluctuates on the river from 10 to 40 grams.
  6. Leash. Winter leashes for roach are usually knitted from 0.10 to 0.14 millimeters.
  7. Hook. Since in winter the roach is caught in the course both for bloodworms and for worms, the hook sizes are chosen accordingly: No. 18 - in the first case, and No. 12 - in the second.

The installation of this gear is carried out according to the paternoster principle as follows:

  1. At the end of the main fishing line, a large loop of 30-40 centimeters is made.
  2. Cut the loop in the ratio of 1/3 and 2/3 of the length.
  3. A swivel with a carabiner is tied to the short end for attaching the sinker.
  4. At the long end, a small loop is knitted for attaching a leash.

For still water

On a pond, lake or reservoir, roach is caught with three types of rods:

  • melting;
  • mormyshnaya with a nod;
  • windless.

Each of the three tackles, despite the external similarity, has different mountings.

remothless

The very name of this rod speaks of its purpose. This tackle is very sporty due to the absence of any plant or animal bait. The installation of this gear is the thinnest and most delicate.

  1. Udilnik. The lightest of all, which allows the hand not to get tired for several hours of fishing. Often, athletes make the lightest fishing rods with their own hands.
  2. Reel or reel. It is used only for storing a supply of fishing line.
  3. Fishing line. For sports fishing, which is certainly a revolver, the thinnest are selected: from 0.06 to 0.10 millimeters.
  4. Nod. Each angler selects a gatehouse for the necessary game of a certain mormyshka. Therefore, you can see several fishing rods with different equipment in the chaise boxes. Nods are made of metal or various plastics.
  5. Mormyshka. The choice depends on the mood of the roach and the ability of the angler to serve this or that bait.

Of the popular winter roach mormyshkas, the following are worth mentioning:

  • devil;
  • goat;
  • Uralka;
  • witch;
  • ant.

Mormyshka with a nod

If you put a bloodworm on the mormyshka of a revolver, then the class of the fishing rod changes. Although a fishing rod can be assembled for a moth tackle in the same way as a reelless rig, only a mormyshka can be a simple shot with a hook. After all, the fish is tempted by the bloodworm, and not by the special frequency of the game with tackle.

In order to be ready for different conditions of the reservoir, you need to have several tackles with you with different mounts, which should differ in such characteristics as:

  • line thickness - from 0.06 to 0.10 millimeters;
  • the weight of the mormyshka and the corresponding nod;
  • the shape of a mormyshka, sometimes a simple pellet does not suit a roach;
  • mormyshka color - at a depth it is better to use light, aground - dark.

float rod

Winter float rod - a type of stationary fishing. Floaters are usually located in one place at the fed holes, in contrast to the rushing back and forth non-reelers. Consider the structure of the winter float in detail.

Udilnik

Just like a fishing rod for winter fishing in the course of a float, the tackle is stationary, so you don’t need to lighten it. We choose a fishing rod with a comfortable handle, a good reel and a flexible but stiff whip.

fishing line

Often other representatives of the carp family are tempted by roach bait. If the bream or bleak do not cause significant damage, then bream or chub passing by can give heat, so the main fishing line should be set at least 0.14 millimeters in diameter. The leash can be made a couple of hundredths of a millimeter thinner.

It is not advisable to use braided fishing line for winter fishing due to its increased freezing!

Float

In winter fishing, several types of floats are used, here they are truly different in taste and color. Here are some examples of their modifications:

  • a float with a longitudinal hole, mounted on a fishing line with a fixing pin-antenna;
  • floats with pins and fastening with cambric;
  • two-piece model, folding when biting;
  • models with petals opening when biting.

Loading

The main requirement for loading winter gear is based on the fact that the float should not freeze into the ice of the hole. Therefore, the weights are hung so much that the float is about a centimeter below the surface of the water in the hole. This will allow him to signal a bite even with a small crust of ice.

In a small current, the tackle is deliberately overloaded to ensure that it is kept in one place. In this case, it looks like a variant of a fishing rod for a current.

Leashes

On a float fishing rod, two leashes are often hung. One leash lies on the bottom ground, the second is in a suspended state, which allows you to lure fish in two horizons. In addition, this equipment allows you to use two different baits on hooks.

Ice fishing with a bobber has both advantages and disadvantages compared to fishing with a nod and jig. The main difference between winter fishing with a float is that you need to know exactly where the fish is standing and moving. Basically, this is achieved by baiting holes, thus we collect all the fish in one place.

This method of fishing completely eliminates the possibility of "playing" with a nozzle, which increases the number of bites. Therefore, such fishing is considered less active.

Detained poachers told the secret of their success for a good bite. Fish inspectors were surprised by the absence of prohibited equipment ...

Benefits of Ice Float Fishing:

1. The float more noticeably signals weak bites of the fish than the nod;
2. The attention of the angler is much less tired: it is easier for him to follow the position of the light float, which stands out in contrast against the dark background of the water;
3. There is no need to constantly hold the fishing rod in your hand, usually it stands on a stand or simply lies on the snow near the hole;
4. If you drill another hole nearby, you can successfully fish with two rods at the same time;
5. If you put up a tent, you can catch even in severe frost. In a tent, with the right equipment, you can even lie down, sleep, cook, etc.

The most important: you need to make sure that the ice crust that forms on a frosty day in the hole does not interfere with the movement of the float, otherwise you can miss the bite. And so that our float does not freeze into ice, it is usually immersed in water by 2.5 - 3 cm.

If a mormyshka with a nozzle is used as a hook, then its weight should be enough to keep the float under water. And this may mean that the carrying capacity of winter floats must be selected individually, for each type and weight of jig. In order to make the eyes less tired and easier to observe weak bites, the upper part of the float is most often painted red.

Ice Fishing with a Float: Fitting the Rig and Properly Loading the Float

It is advisable to adjust the winter float gear at home by immersing the end of the fishing line with a hook or mormyshka in water poured into some fairly high vessel. Why it is better to do it at home than in the cold: yes, because it is much more convenient to adjust the weight of the mormyshka or the carrying capacity of the float at home than on ice. Better yet, prepare several already adjusted tackles with mormyshkas of different weights and floats of different weights.

Winter Fishing with a Float is also interesting because by the behavior of the float itself in the hole, an experienced angler can determine which fish is disturbing the bait, and in accordance with this, choose the moment of hooking itself, for example:

Perch, grabbing the bait, pulls the float to the bottom, although not as decisively as in summer;
Bream on the other hand, taking the nozzle, on the contrary, raises it from the bottom, which is why the float from a vertical position lies on its side;
Roach, spinning near the nozzle, barely noticeably moves it.

Of the huge number of different types of winter floats, the most popular was a small cone-shaped white float with a black spot on top. Floats of this shape and color are easier to observe. True, their carrying capacity is too large.

Such floats are most suitable for fishing with medium and heavy mormyshkas. Narrow-bodied and cigar-shaped winter floats, great for light loads or light jig. At the same time, only a thin tip of the float protrudes from the water, which gives it even greater sensitivity.

Pheromone Lures

3 Ways: How to Improve Biting | Secrets of a Good Biting

For 15 years of active fishing, I have found many ways to improve the bite, and here are the most effective ones:

Biting activator. This pheromone additive lures fish the most in cold and warm water. The Fish Hungry bite activator proved to be excellent -

Tackle with increased sensitivity. You should first familiarize yourself with the features of using a particular type.

Pheromone Lures. They attract the attention of fish, stimulate hunger and cause a schooling reflex, which allows you to collect a lot of fish in one place.

Basically, for catching fish in the winter time with a float rod, such baits are used, such as:

Preparing Bait for Winter Fishing

As soon as reservoirs with a large abundance of grass, for example, lakes, are covered with ice, it sticks to the lower edge of the ice, where it is collected. It should be stored in a basement or cellar, most importantly in a cool place, placed in a wooden box and covered with a cloth.

Mormysh remains alive in this state for a long time. And it can be mined throughout the winter. On frosty days when mining, it should be wrapped in rags, and taken for fishing in a wooden box and stored in your pocket or in your bosom.

Getting worms in winter is a pretty big problem. It is best to prepare them, of course, from the fall and store them in the basement in a box with earth, sometimes feeding them with cold potato broth, curdled milk, and slurry. Sometimes you can find worms in winter under the floorboards in a village bathhouse or in large barnyards in manure.

The use of an animal bait when fishing in winter gives a positive result not only when fishing with a winter float rod, but also when fishing with a lure and when fishing with a jig.

Nozzles of animal origin can be very different, but still most winter fishermen use for this purpose:

Motyl(large and small);
Burdock larva;
Maggot;
Worm;
Mormysh.

The success of fishing can depend not only on the type of bait used, but also on how it is put on the hook. For example:

large bloodworm usually dressed in a semi-ring;
Burdock they simply pierce through (usually plant 2 - 3 larvae).

Quite often, in practice, a “sandwich” is used: a burdock with a bloodworm - first a burdock is planted, then a bloodworm. With a weak biting, a small bloodworm shows good results, however, its nozzle requires the thinnest and most well-honed hooks. Some anglers even successfully use artificial baits - colored rubber, cambric, beads, etc., but still most prefer to use baits.

The correct equipment of a winter rod for roach and the right technique for catching this fish are the foundations of successful fishing. One of the most common methods of fishing is passive, which uses equipment to be thrown into the hole, after which visual control of the bite is carried out by the float or nod. This article describes just such a method of fishing. Active, as well as on, are described in the relevant articles on our website. Roach fishing rod equipment in winter can be implemented in various equipment options, depending on the fishing conditions and the preferences of the angler.

How roach hibernates

Roach does not sleep in winter, it feeds all winter. Depending on the weather, it can be more or less active. At the beginning of winter, it feeds in shallow areas and its summer favorite places, gradually sliding into deeper areas of the reservoir. Then the fish gradually become more active, feed more often and more, again come out closer to the shore. Read more about the winter habits of roach here:

Many anglers successfully catch roach in the winter on a float and a nod all this cold season. Others sometimes can not catch anything but a couple of small fish. In order to successfully hunt roach in winter, you need to go through several “stages”, put together some “variables” in the roach bite equation:

  1. The choice of fishing tactics depending on the time of year and the characteristics of the reservoir.
  2. Search directly on the reservoir.
  3. The correct system of ice feeding and the composition of the bait.
  4. Proper equipment and bait.

Catching roach on a winter rod - tactics and searching for fish

I hope you have read the general article about winter roach, the link to which is at the beginning of this publication. From it, it will become clear to you at what time and in what places you need to look for this fish in winter. We will assume that we have decided on the reservoir, time and all other factors, and decided to use the passive method to fish with a float (or a nod).

It is important to understand that in order to find roach parking spots on a reservoir, especially on a large one, you should actively look for it. This is the basis of the whole tactics of catching this fish in the winter. Well, if this place is known in advance. You can join the town of fishermen that has grown up on the ice - after all, they don’t just sit all in one place. If you do not like noisy companies, then move away from the accumulation of fishermen at least 500 meters to get to another feeding zone so that the presence of tens and hundreds of kilograms of bait under the fishing tents does not spoil your tactics.

To successfully search, you can use . Given good visibility under water, reconnaissance using this device can be carried out much faster than with a fishing rod.

Low current rig option

nozzles

The main bait is, of course, bloodworm. And here it is also important to choose an option that the fish will like. A roach can take on one larva, but not on two or three, and vice versa. Sometimes she reacts to a sandwich of bloodworm and maggot. In addition to the bloodworm, there are a number of nozzles that can be tested on the pond - they show very good results.

Among the many options, we indicate only those that really work for roach:

  • Cow udder dyed red with food coloring (piece)
  • Maggot
  • Chernobylnik (burdock moth larva)
  • Semolina mash (via syringe)
  • Mormysh

The udder deserves special attention. The roach is very attracted to the smell of this bait. Few people use it, as it is difficult to get. It is not found in a department store, but can be obtained in the market or at the slaughterhouse. A small piece of 300 grams is enough for the whole winter, if you cut it into small pieces the size of a matchbox (for each fishing trip) and put it in bags and hide it in the freezer.

When fishing, cut off a pea-sized piece with a knife and put it on a hook. This bait keeps well on the hook, even with a very active bite, sometimes the bait does not change even once during the entire fishing trip. Once a year, it’s worth the trouble to find it, thus providing yourself with excellent bait for the whole season.

Another excellent and rarely used bait is Chernobyl. You can get it in the fall in the dry branches of Chernobyl (burdock). Bushes must be broken and stored somewhere in the yard, and the larvae must be taken out before fishing. It will not work to get it right away and store it all winter - the larvae will die. And in the branches they will feel great even in severe frost. For roach fishing, you can try to use various special dips, pheromones and activators. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't.

Burdock moth larvae

bait

Catching roach and ram in winter on a float implies the active use of bait. As we have already said, it is important not to overfeed the roach, you need to feed it little by little, pointwise and constantly add a little bit to maintain the feed column. In more detail about this, as well as the composition and manufacture of the best bait for roach in winter, see this article:

The correct use of bait is the most important factor for successful winter fishing for this fish. Therefore, when preparing for fishing, pay maximum attention to this issue.

To make winter floats with your own hands, you do not need special skills and complex tools. Everyone can deal with this. A home-made float is adjusted to the required dimensions and load capacity directly during the manufacturing process. In this article, we will consider the features of self-production of floats for a winter fishing rod of various designs.

Floats for winter fishing

In winter fishing with a bait, a float is not just a bite signaling device, but the most important element of equipment. In addition to fixing attempts on the bait, a properly configured rig takes part of the weight of the bait during the bite on the rise, which allows you to successfully hook the most cautious fish. More details - about. There are not as many design options for winter signaling devices as for open water fishing. However, the nuances of the equipment are no less important. Winter gear requires finely tuned equipment, and the float in it is the most important element.

If the installation with hooks and underlays is easily adjusted to any carrying capacity by changing the weight of the shots used, then difficulties may arise with the mormyshka. The angler may simply not have a mormyshka and a float that are appropriate in terms of carrying capacity and weight. A jig that is too heavy on a small piece of styrofoam will work on active fish. In the dead of winter, such tackle most likely will not work due to the roughness of the equipment. This is expressed in the trembling of the float when biting (that is, the fish, in principle, manifests itself) and the absence of a successful hooking - a bream or crucian carp just immediately spits out the bait, feeling the weight of the mormyshka or the pressure of the fishing line with a shed on the lower lip. The overall buoyancy of the system should be slightly negative so that the mormyshka slowly sinks the rig, and not drags it to the bottom like a stone. Then, when biting on the rise, the pop-up foam will take the weight of the mormyshka onto itself, and the fish will not feel a foreign object in its mouth.

If there is no suitable float for a specific mormyshka, then you can take a slightly larger one (floats with a load) and grind it with a needle file (sandpaper) until the entire installation receives a slight negative buoyancy (begins to sink). It is for such a case that it is more convenient to make a home-made version, having correctly turned it before painting (so as not to peel off the already painted store). Consider how to do it yourself.

Manufacturing

The design is simple - a body made of foam or wood with a hole in the middle or an eyelet (pin) for fastening through the cambric. The simplest option is a do-it-yourself winter float made of foam. Styrofoam is easy to process, now there is a lot of it around, so it makes no sense to complicate your work using wood.

DIY (click to enlarge)

Simple single float

You can make a winter float with your own hands of any shape - spherical, droplet, barrel, tablet. It is much more important then to grind it to the desired load capacity. The fastening is made non-removable, through a hole in the body with a pin, or removable - with a cambric on a leg. To work, you will need the simplest tools and materials:

  • Styrofoam - hard, low porosity.
  • Material for the pin - plastic sticks, toothpicks, etc.
  • Cambric, thin steel (copper) wire for eyelets - in the manufacture of hinged fastening.
  • Waterproof adhesive that does not corrode the foam
  • Acrylic paints, nail polish for coloring
  • Knife, scissors, needle files, files, sandpaper, thin drill, thick needle.

A blank is cut out of the foam plastic with a knife, depending on the desired size of the future product. The minimum is 6-8 mm thick and up to 1 cm long. Next, the workpiece is turned to a rounded shape. With a heated needle or drill, a hole of the desired diameter is drilled in the workpiece. Mounting options:

  1. Lower antenna for cambric
  2. Through hole for permanent attachment through bodies.
  3. Eyelet and pin with a tube for hinged fastening.

The lower antenna or wire is fixed tightly in the body with a moment or superglue. Winter signaling devices do not need reliable fastening, as in summer - there are no long-range casts. If we make a longitudinal cut in the cambric, we get a completely removable mounting option.

Hollow glued plastic

From the tubes, pens and other similar materials that have come across, you can glue a hollow plastic float. However, this design has a significant drawback - the lack of the possibility of turning to fit a specific mormyshka.

Composite

Compounds are designed for sensitive adjustment of gear when fishing at sufficient depths for bream, roach, crucian carp. Their total carrying capacity is greater, and when biting on the rise, only the upper signal part first pops up. The large body remains underwater and continues to offset the weight of the lure. The joint is recruited from foam bodies of various shapes, from bottom to top, from large to small. The blanks are cut out of foam and fastened loop to loop with wire hinges on glue. Instead of polystyrene, rigid polyurethane foam can be used. Such a composite float for winter fishing with your own hands is no worse than a store-bought one.

Flowers and petals

Load capacity setting

The most important part of the manufacturing process is setting the load capacity. To do this, the workpiece is attached to a piece of fishing line, the mormyshka is tied under which the float is made. Experiments can be carried out in a three-liter jar or bucket of water. Initially, such an installation should have positive buoyancy. Next, the foam is turned with a needle file or sandpaper until the workpiece under this load begins to slowly sink. Such a float setting for a winter fishing rod is an advantage over ready-made store options. The result is a customized link.

Coloring

This part of the work is optional, but desirable. With the proper approach, the result will be a float for winter fishing, which is no different from store products, but already selected and tuned for a specific weight of equipment. For painting, you can use acrylic paints, varnishes that do not corrode the foam. It is better to prime porous materials before painting so that the paint does not soak into the pores.

Painted homemade ice fishing floats are more durable and look prettier. The main task of coloring is not artistic, but purely functional. The bright striped signaling device is simply more visible in a dark hole, especially when fishing at night. For even better visibility, the foam can be painted with a luminous phosphor varnish.
