Therefore, be prepared, if your plane heading to Orly is delayed in flight and approaches Paris at night, it will definitely be landed at Charles de Gaulle airport.

As a rule, almost all domestic flights are received at Orly Airport, which is the second hub for major French airlines.
International flights from Orly fly mainly to south direction- V Mediterranean countries. The main intercontinental destinations from Orly are the French possessions in the Caribbean and French Africa. Regional French flights also fly from here.

Orly Airport (L'aéroport de Paris-Orly) has existed in France since 1909. But at that time it was not particularly popular and was used only to a limited extent. Its heyday occurred in the 50s of the 20th century. Everything appeared more planes, it was necessary to transport more people and cargo, and La Bourget Airport (Aéroport Paris-Le Bourget ) couldn't cope. The realization has come that a new major airport needs to be built.

In the village of Orly, not far from Paris, construction began on a large hub (large at that time, now it would be known as modest). At that time, it was believed that 14 km from the city was a sufficient distance and the airport would not disturb anyone. How wrong they were! The city has grown so much that it has almost reached the airport and now from 23:00 to 5:00 flights to Orly are prohibited so as not to interfere with people’s recreation. And all late planes are transferred to other airports in Paris, most often to Roissy (Charles de Gaulle).

Myth

There is a very popular legend in Ukraine that the airport is named after Hetman Mazepa’s comrade-in-arms Pylyp Orlyk. They say he was the owner of this area and the airport was named after his last name. We have to disappoint you. This is a myth and a completely unsubstantiated statement. The village of Orly existed many years before this character. Judging by historical maps, it was designated already in 1620, and this is a hundred years before the appearance of Pylyp Orlik. The son, Gregory, also has nothing to do with the name of the airport. Yes, he was an outstanding French soldier and diplomat, received the title of count, but still has nothing to do with the village of Orly and the name of the airport.

For a very long time after its construction, this airport was simply called Paris Airport, but after the introduction of CDG it was renamed Orly.

Orly - the beginning

The airport was opened on May 23, 1909 (then it was just an aviation port). It became the main airport in France, where most aircraft were based. In 1910 there was a flood that made it unusable most. During the First World War, the port was an emergency field for the Allies, and part of the land was given to people for crops.

On January 1, 1918, 11 hectares of land were requisitioned and the history of the Orly-Villeneuve camp began. More and more aircraft began to fly to the front from this airfield. On March 31, 1918, the Americans created their own air base in this territory. After the First World War the base had military significance. Then a civilian airport was built and transportation of civilians began.

During World War II, Orly Airport was a German military base, was systematically bombed and was liberated on August 23, 1944, and then transferred to the US Army Air Forces. Until 1950, the main airport in Paris was La Bourget, and the air show was held in Orly. But the need for a new large airport increased and it was decided to move the main airline companies to Orly, and to hold an air show in La Bourget, which is currently one of the most famous in the world. Also in 1950, Orly carried about 1.2 million passengers and on March 1, 1954, Orly became a completely civilian airport. The French army and the US armed forces continued to use the airport for their own purposes, but not as actively. At the end of 1960, the airport occupied an area equal to a fifth of Paris.
