The Orthodox world celebrates the Feast of the Epiphany on the night of January 18-19. In Moscow, about 60 swimming pools and ponds will be equipped for swimming. The capital has prepared for traditional Epiphany bathing. As Deputy Mayor for Housing, Communal Services and Improvement Pyotr Biryukov reported today at a meeting of the Presidium of the Moscow Government, they will be held on January 18 from 18.00 until 12.00 on January 19.

59 swimming pools have been prepared at Moscow reservoirs. All of them are equipped with safe approaches and descents to the water. Nevertheless, Pyotr Biryukov warned, due to the fact that due to the warm winter, the thickness of the ice on the reservoirs does not exceed 15 centimeters, the authorities believe that for safety reasons it is impossible to allow a mass exit of people on it. District authorities have been instructed to equip all approaches to the swimming pools with boardwalks and anti-slip coatings.

For guaranteed security for bathing and providing assistance if necessary, 2.5 thousand rescuers, volunteers, medical workers and representatives of public utility services will be on duty near all the baths.

All bathing areas are equipped with warm changing rooms and toilets. You can drink hot tea and warm up, but not with strong drinks. Their use, Pyotr Biryukov emphasized, is strictly prohibited. According to city authorities, 120 thousand Muscovites will take part in the bathing.

Epiphany 2019 is coming very soon; this holiday is one of the 12 main church holidays. Its date is not transferable and is always celebrated on January 19th.

The evening before the holiday, January 18, is also considered sacred, because it is at this time that the water gains healing, miraculous properties and is considered sacred.

One of the main traditions of the holy holiday of Epiphany is mass bathing in ponds or fonts. A huge cross is carved into the ice, and the clergy consecrate these fonts. On this page you will find a complete list of places in Moscow where you can swim on Epiphany.

About 60 swimming pools will open in Moscow. You can plunge into the ice hole from 18:00 on January 18 to 18:00 on January 19. This was announced by Deputy Mayor for Housing, Communal Services and Improvement Pyotr Biryukov at a meeting of the Presidium of the Moscow Government.

Epiphany bathing areas are equipped with flooring with anti-slip coatings. Changing rooms, heating points and mobile toilets will be installed here. Each site will be illuminated, and parking will be provided nearby. In addition, teams will be assigned to each swimming area for timely cleaning.

Police officers will ensure security both in the temple areas and in bathing areas. Also, ambulance teams will be on duty at each swimming area, and hot food and temporary retail outlets will open.

Where to swim on Epiphany in Moscow

All swimming places are familiar to Muscovites, since the addresses practically do not change from year to year. In this case, it is worth considering the intervention of sanitary doctors. They checked the water quality in all reservoirs where they planned to swim for Epiphany, and some of them were considered unsuitable due to poor water quality.

How to swim properly on Epiphany

Test your body for medical contraindications.
Doctors are categorically against swimming in an ice hole at Epiphany if you have the following health problems:
- inflammatory diseases of the nasopharynx, paranasal cavities, otitis;
- cardiovascular diseases;
- epilepsy, previous skull injuries; cerebral vascular sclerosis;
- neuritis, polyneuritis;
- diabetes mellitus, thyrotoxicosis;
- glaucoma, conjunctivitis;
- pulmonary tuberculosis, pneumonia, bronchial asthma, emphysema;
- nephritis, cystitis, inflammation of the appendages, inflammation of the prostate gland;
- gastric ulcer, enterocolitis, cholecystitis, hepatitis;
- venereal diseases.

2. To swim in an ice hole on Epiphany, you need to choose the right place.

The ideal ice hole for swimming in an ice hole for Epiphany is:

verified place. Preferably an organized one, not a rural pond at midnight.
The depth of the font should not exceed 1.8 m.
The font must be fenced to prevent accidental falls into the water.

3. Don't forget about your uniform!

7.Warm up after swimming! Rub yourself with a towel, quickly get dressed. And drink something hot: tea prepared in advance, for example.

8.No alcohol before swimming! And the most you can afford afterwards is a little church cohors. It is widely believed that alcohol warms the body. But this is only in the first half hour after taking it! Then the opposite effect occurs, fraught with serious colds.

9.Trust your body! And, if looking at cold water fills you with horror, think again – is it worth it?

10.Do not go into the water without prayer. Let it be short (“Our Father,” for example), even in your own words, but turn to God on this day with words coming from your very heart.

slippers so as not to injure your feet, just to prevent them from slipping on the ice,
