There are a great many lakes, large and small, on planet Earth, and you can tell something interesting about each of them. One has an unusual history of origin, another has a unique water composition and lives fish that are not found anywhere else, the next has the greatest depth - the list goes on and on. This amazing lake there will probably be one in your region - you just need to be curious.

Amazing and unusual lakes in Russia

If you look at the map of Russia, there are more than two million blue lake dots on it. Each blue dot is a body of water created by nature for a specific purpose. Among them there are unremarkable lakes, but there are unusual and strange ones that surprise and make you think about the diversity of manifestations of Nature on Earth.

Shaitan

There are historical and cultural monuments, and there are those created by nature. One such monument is located near the city of Urzhum in the Kirov region - the amazing karst lake Shaitan.

The name of the lake “Shaitan (devil, demon, devil)” is associated with its natural features, for which there was no explanation before and were associated with manifestations of evil spirits. Emissions of water, as local residents believed, occur when the evil spirit living at the bottom of the lake becomes angry. They didn’t swim in the lake, didn’t fish – they were afraid.

If you look at the lake from above, it looks like an oval with almost smooth shores, the dimensions of which are 240x180 m. The area of the water surface is about 2 hectares. Around the lake there are dense, sometimes impenetrable forests. You can only get there on foot - there are no roads or hiking trails.

There is a scientific explanation for the processes occurring there. As a result of the washing out of rocks, a void was formed in the thickness of the earth, the roof of which then collapsed, resulting in a kind of funnel (depth from 12 to 25 m), filled with water. Its level is maintained by groundwater and precipitation. In the central part of the reservoir there are two vertical wells communicating with the underground layer of water.

Their holes are periodically clogged with silt, which is knocked out by the pressure of the lower layer of water. As a result, fountains form on the surface of the lake; their height sometimes reaches 10 m. Such water columns are not observed so often. The presence of the wells was discovered in 2008, when a diver sank to the bottom. The water temperature in the lower layers is kept within +7 °C.

Another amazing attraction is the small islands floating on the surface of the lake, covered with vegetation. It turns out that they appear as a result of rising water levels, during which pieces of the swampy shore break off and drift until they wash ashore. Daredevils even take rest breaks on them, since some islands are quite large and can support several people.

Beautiful nature and a desire to meet unique lake attract lovers of everything unusual here. In the gazebo on the shore there is a book of reviews, the entries in which are constantly updated.

Another amazing creation of nature is located in the vicinity of Nalchik (Kabardino-Balkaria) - these are five karst lakes, which are called Blue. The most unique and interesting is Lake Tserik-Kol. People come here not to swim or fish, but to admire the unusually beautiful landscape and emerald-colored water.

Hydrogen sulfide gives the water its emerald color; its smell can be felt near the lake. Because of this there are no fish here, but fauna represented only by the crustacean Gammarus. Representative flora- the simplest algae.

The dimensions of the reservoir are small - 230x130 m, depth is 279 m - this is the deepest karst lake in Russia. There are suggestions that the research result is not final, and the depth is much greater.

The lake has no tributaries; one river flows out of it, carrying large volumes of water annually, but the water level is constant - it is maintained by underground rivers. The water temperature is the same throughout the year - about +9 °C, so it does not heat up in summer and does not freeze in winter.

Unexplored voids and caves at the bottom of the unusual lake attract divers, but no one has dared to go down there yet. Like everything that is not fully explored, the history of the lake is overgrown with legends. They say that at the bottom lies the brave cavalry of Tamerlane, along with all the looted treasures, several Nazi tanks and a truck loaded with port wine. So far, only a truck and a box of port wine have been found. Everything else awaits the conquerors of the water column.

Distant cold tundra Kola Peninsula, mountainous terrain, mysticism and legends, amazing, unique, unusual - all this has to do with Seydozero, located at an altitude of 189 m above sea level in the area of the villages of Lovozero and Revda.

The lake is named so because of the sacred stones (seida), where, as the Sami believe, the spirits of deceased shamans move. There are many such stones around Seydozero and Lovozero - they are stacked in pyramids or in the shape of a mushroom on a stem.

When viewed from above, the lake resembles an elongated oval 8 km long and 2.5 to 1.5 km wide, hidden between mountains that protect it from cold winds from the north. The current microclimate is favorable for aquatic life, rare species animals and plants that are found only here.

The unusual reservoir attracts scientists, ufologists, historians with archaeological finds, myths and legends that are associated with the history of the region. There is an assumption that in the vicinity of Seydozero there was ancient civilization Hyperborea and the proof of its existence is a city underground or in the depths of a lake.

Rock paintings, destroyed ancient buildings, stones in the shape of even rectangles, wells under water going deep into the mountains indirectly confirm this assumption. In the lake valley, instruments recorded a huge void, which may also testify in favor of the hypothesis of an ancient highly developed civilization.

Seliger

Seliger or Ostashkovskoye Lake on the territory of the Tver and Novgorod regions is not a lake in the full sense of the word, but a system of reservoirs connected by channels. They were formed as a result of the collapse of glaciers, so the entire chain stretches from north to south for 100 km and occupies a huge area of 260 km². Some lakes have their own names, for example, Vyasso, Svyatitsa, Krugloe, Svetloe, Dolgoe, etc.

Unique beautiful lake surrounded by coniferous and deciduous forests, there are no large industrial enterprises in the area, so the air here is clean and has its own smell. The area where the reservoir is located is rich in historical events and there are many interesting places to visit in the area: the ancient city of Ostashkov, the Nilovo-Stolbenskaya hermitage ( monastery) on Stolbny Island, Znamensky convent, Catherine's Church in the village. Rakhmanovo, Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist made of wood (built in 1694, its height is 45 m). Nature, history, the opportunity to enjoy a holiday in beautiful place, great fishing - all this has made the lake famous all over the world.

Interesting facts about Seliger:

  • The lake’s waters are replenished by 110 rivers and streams, and one river flows out: Selizharovka;
  • there are more than 160 islands, small and large;
  • the coastline (its length is 500 km) is highly indented - 24 large reaches are known;
  • the water is clean and transparent - at a depth of up to 5 m the bottom is clearly visible;
  • in writings of the XII-XIII centuries. the lake is mentioned under the name Sereger;
  • About 30 species of fish are known to live in the lake;
  • Every year (since 2005) the Seliger youth forum is held near the lake.

Unusual and strange lakes of the world

Among the variety of reservoirs on the planet there are unusual and strange lakes, the features of which science has tried to explain. They attract the attention of tourists and lovers of everything mysterious and incomprehensible from all over the world.

In the vicinity of Dakar (Senegal) there is an unusual lake pink color- Retba. It is small in area - only 3 km², depth - no more than 3 m. Once it was a lagoon, connected to the ocean waters by a narrow channel, which gradually filled with sand. Now it is an independent body of salt water.

The pink color of the water is explained simply - cyanobacteria live in it, existing on Earth for more than 3.5 billion years. There are no other representatives of organic life in salt water. The color may change depending on the time of day and wind direction.

The water in the lake is so salty that if you stay in it for more than 10 minutes you can get serious burns. Its salinity is 1.5 times higher than the concentration of salt in the Dead Sea - 1000 ml of water contains 380 g of salt. It is impossible to drown there - the water pushes out any body.

Previously, the depth of the lake was shallower, and the water only reached the knees of salt miners; now salt can be mined from a boat or while standing up to your neck in water. The increase in water level is associated with the large scale of salt production - 25 thousand tons annually. To get salt, you have to break the blocks at the bottom and stay in the water for quite a long time. To protect the skin from burns, rub it with shea butter. Salt is exported to all countries of the world.

Inkwell - lake (Inklake)

Algeria is famous for the strange and only lake in the world, the water of which can be written like ink - Ink Lake (Black Eye). Its properties are determined by the composition of the water of the inflowing rivers - one contains a large amount of organic compounds from swampy peatlands, the other contains iron salts. Their combination leads to the formation of a composition that “works” like ink.

There is no life in thick inky water, it is poisonous - its fumes are unsafe for health. Residents of surrounding villages pour the “ink” into small containers and sell it. There is demand, business is booming.

On the island of Flores (Indonesia) there is the world-famous volcano Kelimutu, the last eruption of which occurred in 1968. He became popular place visited by tourists from all over the world who come to admire the unusual and strange lakes on its top.

There are three lakes, they were formed in the craters of the volcano. Gradually, the depressions filled with water, and it was different in all three reservoirs - reddish, with a tinge of turquoise, sometimes black, green or brown.

Compounds of minerals and gases color water. Iron + hydrogen sulfide – the color is reddish, and sulfuric or hydrochloric acid in large quantities gives a greenish color. Residents of nearby villages gave each lake a name. There is a Lake of Old Men, a Lake of Girls and Boys, a Lake of Evil Spirits (enchanted lake).

To see all three bodies of water, you need to climb observation deck. They are especially interesting at sunrise and sunset - the surroundings are full of mystery and enigma.

Red Lake – Colorado Lagoon (Red Lagoon)

An unusual and unique lake with salty red water is Laguna Colorado (Bolivia), which is in the Eduardo Avaroa National Park, 10 km from the Chilean border.

Colonies of certain types of bacteria and mineral salts dissolved in water give color to water. Its color depends on the temperature environment, from precipitation.

The lake is also unique due to its location - it is located in the mountains at an altitude of 4278 m above sea level. Its dimensions are 9.5x10.5 km, area is 60 km². Interestingly, you can walk through the entire lake, since its depth is from 35 to 50 cm. Small white islands consisting of the mineral borax are scattered across the entire surface of the lake. The contrast between the water and the islands creates surreal pictures that can be seen during sunrise and sunset. Tourists from all over the world are attracted not only by the strange coloring of the lake, but also by the opportunity to see hundreds of James's flamingos, as well as Chilean and Andean flamingos.

What else does our mysterious and beautiful nature conceal? How many interesting bodies of water, birds and animals there are on our Earth. And I would like to tell you about the 4 most unusual lakes ah on Earth. Who would have thought that there would be an asphalt lake on our native Earth? And it turns out there is even such a thing.

Asphalt Lake

Trinidat Island became famous only because in its central part there is a real asphalt lake. Magnificent asphalt! Of course, you can’t go into the lake and take a dip, but it is located in the crater of the former mud volcano, its depth is... 90 meters (!), and its area is 46 hectares. Emerging from the bowels of the earth through a volcano, oil lying at great depths loses all its volatile substances under the influence of evaporation and turns into asphalt. All this happens in the center of the lake basin. The place where more and more new layers of liquid asphalt appear is called “Mother Lake”. It is thanks to him that the Trinidad lake retains its reserves, despite the fact that every year up to 150 thousand tons of asphalt are extracted from it, which is used for construction needs. The bulk of it is exported to the USA, England and China. During the development of the lake, more than 5 million tons of asphalt were extracted, while the level of the miracle lake dropped by only half a meter! Any object that falls on the surface of the lake disappears into the black abyss. Scientists who explored the coastal depths of the “reservoir” discovered a whole cemetery of prehistoric animals. Including skeletons of mastodons, extinct during the Ice Age, which lived in this region. There are also deposits of valuable resin in the Dead Sea, famous for its salt reserves. The whole world knows about the extreme salinity of its water, in which it is impossible to drown. However, only specialists know about the deposits of the rarest resin. This unique substance has been extracted from the waters of the Dead Sea since ancient times. Resin is used in a wide variety of fields: medicine, for road construction, coating ship hulls, and in the chemical industry.

Ink Lake

This unusual lake is located in Algeria, near the city of Sidi Bel Abbess. The lake is filled with ink. There are no fish or plants in the lake, since the poisonous dark blue ink is only suitable for writing with! Until recently, people could not understand how such an unusual substance ended up in the reservoir. Scientists, having carried out relevant research and analysis, came to the conclusion: it’s all about the composition of the water of two small rivers flowing into this mysterious lake. One of them contains simply a huge amount of dissolved iron salts, the other contains all kinds of organic compounds from peat bogs located in the river valley. Merging together into a lake basin, the streams interact with each other, replenishing the amount of wonderful ink. Local residents view this miracle differently: some consider it a devilish obsession; others, on the contrary, benefit from it. The ink is sold not only in stores in Algeria, but also in Africa, the Mediterranean countries, and the Near and Middle East.

empty lake

But the mystery of the Russian Empty Lake, located in Altai, has not yet been revealed. All the reservoirs around are teeming with fish and lake game, but in Pustoy there is not a blade of grass, not a fry, not a bird on the shore, and this despite the fact that rivers flow from the fish lakes and flow into Pustoy. Researchers have tried dozens of times to populate the mysterious lake with local aquatic fauna and flora, giving preference to the most unpretentious species. However, all the experiments ended the same way: the fish and other living creatures, after a day or two, died, the vegetation rotted. The empty remained empty. But what is most surprising is that chemists, who have repeatedly analyzed water for the content of toxic substances, have proven that the water is absolutely non-toxic, suitable for consumption, and even... resembles champagne thanks to the smallest bubbles of harmless natural gas. The water of the lake was studied by experts from Germany, the USA, Belgium and Britain, and no one until now could explain or at least offer a plausible hypothesis about the phenomenon of this amazing reservoir. Will this mystery be solved in the foreseeable future? Alas, experts shrug their shoulders vaguely.

acid lake

But still, the most “dead” sea on planet Earth is the ill-fated Lake of Death - a large body of water located in Sicily. Its shores and waters are devoid of any vegetation and living creatures; even birds do not fly over the lead-gray water. Swimming in it is deadly. Any living creature that falls into the water of this terrible lake dies instantly. A person who dips his hand into the water for a second watches in horror as it turns red, becomes covered in blisters, the skin peels off, revealing bloody bones, bursting veins and blood vessels. But the fact is that water contains... sulfuric acid in huge concentrations. Very dangerous studies conducted by scientists in 1999 led to a stunning conclusion: concentrated sulfuric acid is released into the lake from two sources located at its bottom. It is not surprising that from time immemorial the Sicilian mafia hid their victims in these deadly waters: an hour - and a person does not even have teeth left.

The vast majority of lakes are not only sources fresh water, but also interesting places visits for tourists and travelers. We will present here nine of the most original lakes in the world, and tell you why exactly they are amazing and why they are worth visiting.

(10 photos of amazing lakes)

There are no lakes in the world deeper than Baikal! It is located in Russian Federation in the south of Eastern Siberia. Resembling with its outlines a nascent new moon, the lake stretches, if you look at the map, from northeast to southwest. Its greatest depth is 1642 meters.
There is no purer water in the world than in Lake Baikal! It is a huge natural reservoir storing 20 percent of the world's and 90 percent of Russia's fresh water reserves. 336 rivers and streams carry their waters to Baikal, and the Selenga River brings half of all the water entering it into the lake. And the Angara is the only river flowing from Lake Baikal. The water from the lake is amazing and unique. It is absolutely transparent, clean and rich in oxygen. There are even seals in it. Baikal water was considered healing, and various diseases were treated with it.

There are no mountain lakes in the world with more fresh water reserves than Titicaca! It is located on the border of the South American countries of Bolivia and Peru.
From an airplane, the lake looks like a sea, and from the shore it partly resembles a vast marshy swamp overgrown with reeds, which local residents have adapted for the construction of their homes and habitat islands, making clothes, hats, bags and other things. Local legend says that in ancient times, the Aymara Indians, crossing Titicaca in their pirogues, entered the territory of the Incas. These peoples failed to get along, but the proud Aymara did not even think of returning - they decided to stay and live here, sailing on the lake. Since then they have lived on the reed raft islands.

Cheongji is unique in its volcanic origin. This is the highest crater lake. It is located on the border of China and North Korea at an altitude of 2189 meters, which is why it is called the “Heavenly Lake”.
Cheongji is surrounded by mountains with winding paths, which can even be traveled on horseback. There are a number of North Korean legends about the lake here. Once upon a time, Hwanun came down from the sky to its shores, whose son became the founder of the Korean state of Gojoseon. The second most popular myth is the legend of Kim Jong Il: lakeside residents seriously assure visitors that the son of Kim Il Sung, the founder of the DPRK, was born on the shores of this lake.

The Crater, like our Baikal, is one of the clearest lakes in the world. It is located in the USA.
You can get there by excursion bus departing from Ashland, or by personal car. The distance to the Crater is 53 kilometers. It is advisable to keep in mind that the road around the lake opens at the end of spring and closes for the winter in October. Driving along it brings true pleasure from the amazing lake landscape that opens up. The Klamath Indians consider it sacred. Until the mid-19th century, they kept the location of the Crater secret, preventing white-skinned explorers from approaching it. It was not until 1853 that John Wesley Hillman became the first white person to visit the lake. He gave it the name "Deep blue lake" US President Theodore Roosevelt declared the area surrounding the Crater a national park in 1902. The main attractions of the lake are a small volcanic island called “Koldovskoy”, and “Lake Old Man” - a nine-meter log floating upright in the water for over a hundred years.

Nakuru is a lake located 140 kilometers from the capital of Kenya, Nairobi (Africa).
It is densely populated by small flamingos. Tens, if not hundreds of thousands of birds, taking off and landing, form a continuous pink blanket of various shades. Flamingos are not alone on Nakuru. In addition to them, there are many ducks, cormorants, pelicans, herons, black terns - in total about four hundred species of birds. The lake is surrounded by the same name national park. On the way to the water, a tourist can meet zebras, hippos, giraffes, antelopes, lions, leopards and cheetahs.

A unique lake consisting of countless small lakes. Kliluk is located in Canada (North America).
In the summer, almost all the water in it evaporates, and sedimentary minerals harden and create “paths” between 365 irregular honeycomb lakes, thanks to which the lake received the name “Spotted Lake.” It is also unique that there are no traces of human activity nearby - not a single souvenir shop, not to mention hotels. For twenty years, local residents protected Kliluk and its surroundings from the encroachments of businessmen, preserving them in their original form, and not in vain. They completely bought the territory and made it a protected area in 2001.

Jiuzhaigou is an unfrozen “Lake of Five Colors” in China (Asia).
It would seem that what is surprising here? The surface of the lake is free of ice all year round, although it does not have a single thermal spring. The bottom of the reservoir is covered with driftwood, and in general, the water in the lake should be cloudy, but again, for a still unknown reason, it remains transparent and clean. Hundreds daily tourist buses They take travelers along a route along intricately curved lakes and thundering waterfalls, surrounded by thickets of bamboo.

Peach Lake looks like an ordinary polluted lake. It is located in Caribbean. States - Trinidad and Tobago.
The uniqueness is that the water in the lake is saturated with liquid natural asphalt. It is estimated that there are about six million tons of it here, which will last for another four hundred years. By the way, the liquid composition of Peach Lake is not just thick, smoking asphalt. There are quite a few places in it to...swim. Therefore, almost 20,000 people come here every year. There is also a camp site on the shore.

Located in Australia, Recherche archipelago. This is a unique pink pond, the likes of which are not found anywhere in the world.
Can you imagine the water being pink? Scientists are still scratching their heads to this day as to why the lake water is colored so strangely. At first it was assumed that algae was to blame, but water samples showed that this was not the reason: there was not a single algae in it that initiated the pink color. The lake is bordered by a belt of white salt and an evergreen eucalyptus forest. There is one more “feature” of this reservoir - all Hiller’s photographs were taken from a bird’s eye view. Tourist visits to Middle Island, where this lake turns pink, are prohibited.

HD video of Flamingos on Lake Nakuru

When we were students, in geography lessons, we learned amazing things about the world around us. And one of the topics that has always interested people is lakes. Over the many years of existence of this natural phenomenon on the planet, man has even learned to create artificial lakes on his own! However, what do we know about them? Yes, the deepest is Baikal, and the one with the largest reserves of fresh water is Titicaca. This is undoubtedly basic knowledge, a base, so to speak, but in this article we want to tell you about much more unusual lakes, which you have hardly heard of in schools and universities. We present to you the top 10 most amazing lakes on the planet. Happy reading!

Who among us has not admired our reflection in the surface of the water? The lack of wind turns the calm surface of the reservoir into an amazing semblance of a mirror, however, Lake Mattison has surpassed all standards. The surface of this lake is so smooth that it can not only resemble, but also surpass any real mirror. Mattison captures the peaks of Mount Tasman and Mount Cook with incredible clarity. Every little detail is visible in such detail that it will be hard to believe your own eyes. And all you can do is admire the stunning picture that appears before you.

Kelimutu Lakes

Volcanoes are incredibly dangerous creatures of nature. But in addition to hot lava and destruction, they can also present pleasant surprises. For example, the craters of the Indonesian volcano Kelimutu filled with water for some time, and as a result turned into three beautiful lakes. And in addition to their unusual location, they all have different colors, which, moreover, are not constant. Lakes change their colors just like a person changes his mood. It is quite possible that, noticing this feature, local residents added amazing lakes special meaning. And they were given the appropriate name - unusual and “talking”. "Lake of the Elderly", "Lake of the Young and Women" and "Enchanted". One of the local legends will tell you that only the souls of the righteous fall into the first two lakes, while the souls of sinners are doomed to endless wanderings among the expanses of the Enchanted Lake. And that is why the bodies of those who drowned in any of the lakes could not be found. Local Indonesians believe that water takes away both body and soul. The constant steam that rises above all three lakes will add to the atmosphere - here you will involuntarily believe in ghosts...

Once again we () turn to the knowledge acquired at the school desk. What is asphalt? Those who have diligently crammed may recall that this is a substance that was invented and manufactured by man. Whatever the case! Nature continues to amaze and laugh at all of humanity. The Peach Lake reservoir represents more than seven million tons of asphalt, naturally occurring, in a liquid state. This is one of the most amazing places on the planet. Peach Lake's asphalt is never in a frozen state; it constantly flows and is shrouded in clouds of thick smoke. But, despite such an unusual component, simple clean water can be found on the surface of the lake in a certain place. And therefore, numerous curious tourists not only admire the unusual natural phenomenon, but also often swim. In addition, while exploring the coast, you will probably come across interesting museum, the exhibits of which are a variety of objects that were found in Peach Lake.

Jiuzhaiguo Lake

Crystal clear and surrounded on all sides by beautiful vegetation - this is how you can describe the Chinese Lake Jiuzhaiguo. You, of course, learned a long time ago that when the temperature of water drops below zero, its state of aggregation changes. However, this lake “violates” our usual rules. The water in Jiuzhaiguo is never covered with ice, regardless of the thermometer readings. For quite a long period of time, scientists believed that this phenomenon could be explained by a thermal spring or its likeness, but long research and active searches led nowhere. In addition, this theory not only did not receive confirmation, but no reasons were found for the year-round non-freezing state of the lake. Well, at least they couldn’t explain it, but everyone – and local resident, and tourists can admire the unforgettable beauty of Jiuzhangguo at any time of the year.

Kliluk Lakes

We have more than once begun comparing lakes by their depth, by their area and cleanliness, but what criteria are required for a lake that contains... many smaller lakes, which, moreover, are completely different in terms of the parameters listed above. Thanks to the sun, which partially evaporates the water, on Lake Kliluk, paths made of lime become visible to the eye, which are a “partition” between tiny lakes. This Canadian lake is translated as “spotted”. And all because, due to differences in the depth of the lakes and the effect of sunlight, each of the mini-lakes can change the color of their waters in the most unexpected way. However, such metamorphoses can only occur in summer and autumn; in the rest of the year, Kliluk is no different from other lakes. Several years ago, the territory was made a protected area, for which the indigenous population of those places worked incredibly hard.

This lake can be found in Kenya, but its peculiarity lies in the fact that it was to the liking not of people, but of birds, thanks, by the way, to whom the lake acquired the status National Park. There are countless representatives of the “feathered” class on the lake - you can see ducks, herons, pelicans, and quite a lot of others, because about four hundred and fifty species of birds were counted on Nakuru. However, the real highlight of Kenya National Park are the beautiful flamingos, which make up the vast majority of all the birds that live there. Pink inhabitants sometimes fill a body of water so closely that the water surface is almost completely hidden from view. You can admire as many flamingos as your eyes can take in! But it is also interesting that in addition to the huge number of birds, in the park you can also see animals, of which there are about sixty species.

In our age of complete disregard for nature, the property of the American Crater Lake is more valuable than ever - it is one of the cleanest bodies of water on the planet. For many centuries, the Indians kept the very existence of this lake a secret, protecting it from all curious people who tried to study the nature of those places. Of course, endless protection of the Crater was not feasible, and therefore today, the territory of this region is officially declared as a National Park of the United States. The lake is also unusual for its small island, which is located in part of its waters and is of volcanic origin. However, this reservoir is famous for something else. For a century now, a log has been floating in the waters of the Crater. You probably thought: “What’s unusual here,” right? But the fact is that the log is more than nine meters long and “travels” in a vertical position! And besides, thanks to the low temperature of the water in the lake, the log was very well preserved, despite its age.

Nature has also created underground rivers for us. Of course, their position is easy to understand from the name, but nature has once again defeated logic. And this time, through the dome of one Texas underwater river, after it collapsed, the underground water abruptly changed its location. However, the interesting thing is that the dome did not fall completely. As a result, a semblance of a very mesmerizing canopy of a natural creation, of enormous size, was formed. Lake Hamilton is located just below it. And this whole magical picture is complemented by a fifteen-meter magnificent waterfall. You probably won’t want to leave such a nice and unusual place!

Beautiful Melissani is unique in that instead of a beach with warm golden sand, the clear waters are surrounded by rock formations. The reason for this was the location of the reservoir - in caves, at a fairly low level. The famous phrase “Water wears away stones” perfectly describes the origin of this Greek lake. The water, in search of a way out, slowly and thoroughly eroded the rocks. This is exactly how, long and persistently, water destroyed space for itself, which later turned into one of the most unusual and beautiful places on the planet. Melissani is not fully illuminated by the sun, and depending on the angle at which the sun's rays fall on the surface of the reservoir, the lake changes its hue over the course of twenty-four hours, and quite dramatically. In addition, the water is so clear that all visitors to the cave will have the feeling that they are not swimming, but simply floating in the air.

In this article we have cited many lakes with crystal clear waters, or, on the contrary, with a unique blue tint. There were even lakes with yellow-colored waters, which, of course, was a very pleasant picture. However, Lake Hillier surpassed everyone in beauty and unusualness. There are only about six lakes on the planet in which the water has a pink tint. The reason for this was a certain type of algae – Dunaliela salina. Of course, those bodies of water in which it can be found are salty. The exception is the Australian lake. It is surprising that absolutely nothing was found in its water that could cause the water to turn pink. However, contrary to all canons, Hillier has a delicate pink tint. After such phenomena, one can only wonder what Nature is capable of.
During geography lessons at school, teachers told us that the most deep lake Baikal, and the largest reserves of fresh water are in Titicaca. However, today we present to your attention a selection of the most unusual lakes in the world, which have more interesting features.

Lake Hillier

Have you always thought that water should be blue, transparent, or, in extreme cases, gray-green? Then you are in for an incredible discovery! There are at least 8 lakes in the world that are not blue, but truly pink! This feature is determined by the algae Dunaliella salina. Naturally, all the lakes where it lives are salty. Except for one thing – Lake Hillier, which is why it opens our list. No algae was found in it, and no special reasons were found at all why the lake could have an unusual color. However, bird's eye photographs claim that Lake Hiller is frankly pink.

Lake Melissani

You have always believed that a lake is a body of water near which there is a beach and, most likely, you can swim if the water is clean enough. I don't want to upset you, but you were wrong. Melissani is a lake with rocks instead of a beach. And all because Melissani is located deep in caves on one of the Greek islands. Have you heard the expression “Water wears away stones”? This is the same case. The water looked for outlets and gradually washed away the rocks. In this amazing way, the water destroyed enough space for itself, which became one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Melissani is only partially illuminated by the sun, and the color of the water in the lake depends on the angle of incidence of the sun's rays - it changes very dramatically during the day. The water in the lake is so clean that it feels like the boats are not floating, but hanging in the air.

Lake Hamilton Pool

From the same school curriculum we know the concept of an “underground river.” Since this river is underground, it means that it flows deep underground - logical, but not always true. This simple logic was refuted by the dome of one of the Texas underwater rivers - it simply collapsed, and it turned out that the underground water became surface water too. The dome did not fall completely, what remained was something like an incredibly beautiful natural canopy of enormous size - under it is now located famous lake Hamilton Pool. All this splendor is complemented by a 15-meter waterfall. How can you not admire this beauty?

Crater Lake

IN modern world this feature of Crater Lake in the USA is probably the most valuable - it cleanest lake. For centuries, the Indians managed to keep the secret of the existence of this lake from everyone who tried to explore the nature of this region. However, it was certainly impossible to do this indefinitely, so now this territory has been declared a national park. But the unusualness of the lake does not end there - in its waters you can see a small island of volcanic origin. But the most interesting thing is that a log has been floating in the waters of the lake for more than a century. Don't you think this is surprising? But the log is 9 meters long and it floats vertically!

Lake Nakuru

This lake is located in Kenya, but it is not people who have chosen it, but birds. There are a lot of them here - ducks, herons, cormorants, pelicans and many others, more than four hundred various types. But most of all there are pink flamingos! The pink inhabitants have so filled the lake that you can barely see the water, and you can see only as many flamingos as you can see!

Lake Kliluk

We are used to comparing lakes by area, depth, and cleanliness, but what rules should we use to measure a lake that consists entirely of small lakes? And they are all different both in depth and in all other parameters. The sun evaporates part of the lake's water, and limestone paths become visible, which separate the small lakes. The territory is a protected area, which the indigenous inhabitants of the surrounding area have been striving for for a very long time. Due to different depths and under the influence of sunlight, the water in the Kliluk lakes can change its color in completely unimaginable ways.

Jiuzhaigou Lake

Strikingly transparent, completely surrounded by greenery that covers even the bottom - Lake Jiuzhaigou in China. You know that water freezes even at zero temperatures? This is not the case; the water in Jiuzhaigou Lake does not freeze at all. For a long time it was believed that the bottom of the lake was littered with thermal springs, however, after careful research, this fact was not only not confirmed, but no other reasons for the non-freezing of water in the lake were found. Thus, the beautiful Jiuzhaigou Lake pleases the eye all year round.

Peach Lake

Asphalt is a substance invented and manufactured by man. Isn't it true? Not true! Peach Lake is a direct example of this. Six million tons of real liquid natural asphalt, what could be more amazing? The asphalt does not harden; on the contrary, it flows and smokes. However, this does not prevent tourists from coming here not only to admire the incredible phenomenon, but also to simply swim. Yes, and there are such places on the surface of the lake - common clean water. For those interested, there is a museum on the coast, which displays a variety of objects recovered from the waters of the lake. An incredibly large sloth bone is not the most unusual thing.

Lake Matheson

We all know that you can see a reflection of the surrounding world on the surface of the water if it is calm enough. However, the surface of Lake Matheson in New Zealand is so perfect that it rivals any mirror. The peaks of Cook and Tasman are reflected so clearly, all the smallest details are so clearly visible, that it becomes difficult to believe. But you should believe your eyes, so we can only marvel at the incredible picture that opens up to our eyes at dawn.
