The largest and most picturesque park in Bangkok is Lumpini. Here you can hide from the bustle of the city and enjoy the tranquility and beautiful natural views. Local residents like to spend leisure time in the park on weekends after hard work and play sports. The park is located in the very center of Bangkok, next to large shopping centers and skyscrapers, which creates a sharp contrast against the backdrop of urban infrastructure.

Description and photo

The territory of Lumpini Park in Bangkok is about 57 hectares. And at the very entrance to the park there is a monument to King Rama IV. Thais constantly put fresh flowers near the monument of the ruler, thereby expressing their gratitude to the king. Locals consider this monument to be sacred, so you should definitely take off your shoes to climb to the sculpture.

Just behind the monument is a large gate to the park. On the territory of Lumpini Park there are many paths, green lawns, beautifully planted palm trees along the paths, big lake and the river. On the lake you can ride a catamaran or a small boat, feed the catfish or just sit on the shore.

Near the water you can often find large monitor lizards the size of a small crocodile. It is difficult for me to say whether they are dangerous to humans, but it is better not to get too close to them.

During public holidays, Thais often hold concerts and other recreational activities in Lumpini Park. For this, a stage was erected on one of the lawns, where artists perform. There are no seats for spectators near the stage, everyone sits right on the grass or dances.

Near the river there is a playground with various swings, where you can often see a lot of children. Located next to the playground small lake and a gazebo where parents usually sit while their children ride on the swings.

The cleanliness and well-groomedness of the park catches the eye most of all. And the thing is that you can’t walk dogs here, throw garbage on the ground, smoke and drink alcohol. This is reported by numerous signs posted throughout the park. There are significant fines for breaking the rules.

The government is careful to ensure that Lumpini Park is a place for cultural recreation and sports. Therefore, here you can often see Thais running, doing aerobics, yoga, martial arts, dancing or meditating somewhere on the lawn.

At the end of the park there is a corner with rare trees and shrubs. Nearby are signs with their names.

Working hours

Lumpini Park is open from 4:30 am to 9 pm. You don't need to pay for entry.

How to get there?

Lumpini Park is located in the center of Bangkok on Rama IV Road. The easiest way to get to the park is by metro, you should get off at Sala Daeng or Ratchadamri (ground metro) and Silom or Lumphini (underground metro). My article will help you navigate the subway.

You can also get to Lumpini Park by city bus No. 4, 13, 15, 22, 45, 46, 47, 109, 115, 141 or 149. Buses No. 15 and 47 follow from the popular Khaosan Road.

And, of course, no one canceled a taxi. But at rush hour, a taxi or bus can get stuck in a traffic jam.

See the exact location of Lumpini Park in Bangkok on the map.

Lumpini Park (or Park Lumphini) is one of the most pleasant places in Bangkok. A quiet green oasis surrounded by skyscrapers made of glass and concrete in the central part of the city. Of all the parks in Bangkok, Lumpini Park is worth visiting in the first place, if only because it is very easy to do due to its convenient location. I really like this park and I have been to it more than once - both in the afternoon and in the evening, and during holiday concerts and when there is a rolling ball here. 🙂

In this article, I will tell you how to get to Lumpini Park, I will show you many beautiful photos that I have accumulated over several visits, and I will also share my general impression from what you see.

By the way, subscribe on my Instagram. There I promptly post the best photos and stories from my travels. 🙂

Lumpini Park on the map of Bangkok

The park is located in the heart of Bangkok, in the Lumphini district, at the intersection of Rama IV Road and Ratchadamri Road. It occupies an area of about 57 hectares.

Lumpini park opening hours

Lumpini park open from 04:30 to 21:00. At about five to nine, park employees begin to walk around the territory and ask everyone to leave, after which they close the gates. Entrance to the park is free for everyone.

How to get to Lumpini Park

The park is located literally at the intersection of all possible transport interchanges, so there are many ways to get here. I will list them all:

  • Underground metro MRT. You need to get off at the Si Lom station (blue line), rising from the subway you will find yourself right in front of the park. The fare is 20-30 baht.
  • Skytrain BTS - Skytrain. Go to Sala Daeng Station (turquoise BTS Silom Line). The fare is 40-50 baht. When you get out, do not rush to go down to the ground, go through the overpass to the Si Lom metro station, go down and cross the road towards the park. If you live near the Green Line (BTS Sukhumvit Line), then you will need to get to SIAM Station and transfer to the Turquoise Line to Sala Daeng Station.
  • Excursions. Not the most trivial option, but still the place to be. 🙂 Some private tours include a visit to Lumpini Park and I will talk about this separately.
  • Taxi. Use the Grab app, the local equivalent of Uber. This will be the cheapest and most reliable option. Immediately connect payment by card, this will give an additional discount.
  • Buses. There are many buses to the park, but I strongly advise you not to use them - they are long and unpredictable. But if you want, just open Google maps and see what routes pass nearby.

Excursions to Lumpini Park

For those who prefer a meaningful walk in the company of a guide telling interesting stories about the places that you observe, I can advise you to take an excursion to Lumpini Park. Of course, the tour will cover not only the park itself, but also other interesting locations. In case of private tour you will also visit the cutest cat cafe in Bangkok, and then stroll through the city's distinctive flower market. And of course, visit the business cards of Bangkok - the Temple of the Reclining Buddha and the Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun), and then take a walk along Chao Phraya on a water tram, exploring Bangkok from the water. And that's not all! 🙂 Next, mega-colorful Chinese and Indian quarters and much more. The program is very rich and believe me, it's worth it. Its cost 129$ for 1-2 persons. The tour is presented by the popular Tripster portal, whose services I have used more than once in Sochi, Istanbul and Phuket - I advise you boldly.

Well, now let's move on to the review. 🙂

Lumpini Park in Travel or Die review

1. One of the entrances to the park.

2. The park is very green and beautiful, all around canals with water, all kinds of trees, grass.

4. This is my favorite "Monument to the Victims of Body Positive". 🙂

5. There are also more classic stories, ala "Mother and Child".

6. During the day, there are very few people in the park and it is very quiet, you can come to sit in the shade, think about your own thoughts or read a book.

7. Well, or ride a catamaran.

8. The cost of renting catamarans is 40 baht for half an hour + 40 baht deposit, suddenly steal.

9. There is an old but restored chapel in the park.

10. Unfortunately, I could not find any interesting facts about her online. 🙁

11. One of the visiting cards of the park is the monitor lizards living on its territory. They swim in the lake and sometimes come ashore.

12. Here I caught the moment of the brewing conflict between the monitor lizard and a gang of evil pigeons.

13. And this is just a heron walking.

14. Peace and quiet.

Sports in Lumpini Park

15. You may be surprised, but the park is pretty decently sharpened for sports. There are locations with strength training equipment.

16. Both old and young are engaged.

17. Moreover, if in Russia young jocks mostly come to fuck with such free simulators, then there is a tangible layer ordinary people for 40.

18. There is a dressing room for the needs of those involved.

19. You can often meet professional cyclists.

20. The bulk of those involved in sports pull themselves up around sunset, when it's not so hot.

21. Mass races begin, at 17-18:00 free aerobics classes start with music, sports games and much more. When you look at all this, you get the feeling that the whole of Bangkok is in sports. 🙂

22. There is also something like a food court where you can have a bite to eat and buy cooling drinks. True, they sway in the afternoon.

23. More carts with food can be found near the western exit from the park.

24. Here you can sit and have a bite to eat quite inexpensively.

25. An aunt sits and sells dried palm bark. Joke, this is food for fish in the pond, it costs 10 baht.

26. My favorite concrete benches. Very stylish, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. And the blood is easy to wash.

27. Doves of peace.

28. This monument is called - "ZHMZH - this is not a vice."

29. Children have their own recreation areas.

30. When I look at these skyscrapers, I immediately remember Central Park in New York.

33. Silence and tranquility.

34. I often went to the park during the day and to be honest, in Bangkok this is not best time for walks - very hot and stuffy, sleepy only on the way. 🙂 And many people sleep in the park without worrying.

35. Sleeping in our parks is the prerogative of homeless people and marginalized elements, in Bangkok everyone does this.

Lumpini park at night

36. In my opinion, the best time to visit the park is in the evening, at 17 o'clock, when the sun is moving towards sunset and does not hit direct fire. The sky gradually turns into golden-yellowish tones and is reflected in the glass of skyscrapers.

37. Monument to King Rama 4 (1851-1868). Thais bring flowers here every day and worship.

38. It is located on the side of the main entrance to the park - southwest, where the metro station is.

39. Intersection of interchanges.

42. Beautiful, well!

45. Well, one more photo of the evening Lumpini. 🙂

Holidays in Lumpini Park

46. I happened to be in the park and during the period of various festive events in it. Of course, at such moments the park is strikingly different from its ordinary state. 🙂 And, as a rule, you don’t even know that there can be some kind of holiday in Thailand, you come with a duty visit to the park, and there is a natural pandemonium!

47. On major holidays, half of the city gathers in the park, both the Thais themselves and other nationalities that live here, a lot of Chinese and Koreans. As a rule, there are also a lot of tourists, but since the holidays are Thai, the locals have a tangible advantage. They arrange various fairs here, field kitchens, sell food in huge quantities and all sorts of trinkets. Concerts, various show programs are held. In general, quite fun, the only negative is that it is too crowded. 🙂 But it’s still worth taking a look, trying some local kulebyaki, watching performances.

48. Get tired of wandering, you can always sit on the grass and taste the local dishes. Oh, I still remember how good this cake was. 🙂

49. It is good in the park and in the pre-Christmas period, when the trees are richly decorated with New Year's illumination.

If you are going for a walk in Bangkok, say for two or three days, the question is - Where to go in Bangkok will definitely get up, I myself encounter
with this constantly, shoveling through a lot of articles and reviews about the sights of Bangkok before the trip.
Lumpini Park in Bangkok (Lumpini Park) is a classic of the genre, to visit Bangkok and not go to Lumpini Park means leaving impressions of this multifaceted city for later,
because Bangkok is amazing and beautiful, diverse and worth exploring in detail.
Lumpini Park in Bangkok (Lumpini Park) is located in the very center of the capital of Thailand and my sister and I planned a trip there as a rest - “respite”, after
long walks to sights, temples and beautiful places Bangkok.
If you have not been there yet, but want to go, then in this article - detailed instructions how to get to Lumpini Park in Bangkok (Lumpini Park), opening hours,
that there is other necessary information.

Where to go in Bangkok? More articles on the capital of Thailand:

Lumpini Park in Bangkok (Lumpini Park) - a bit of history

Huge, 57 hectares, Lumpini Park in Bangkok was formed less than a hundred years ago, in the twenties of the last century.
Its creator, King Rama the sixth, wanted the residents of the city to have somewhere to go to relax, relax, play active outdoor games.
games, sports, cycling.
Then this area was the outskirts of Bangkok. But for 90 years the city has grown so much that Lumpini Park was in its very core.
Such epithets that have set the teeth on edge like - magnificent, oasis, amazing - really have a place to be.
Since when you get to Lumpini Park you never cease to be surprised, how is it? Crowds of people scurry outside the park gates, burning, heat, asphalt melts and fuss,
and here is silence, coolness and tranquility.

Bangkok Lumpini Park - Opening Hours and Entrance

Entrance to the park is of course free. Lumpini Park is state-owned to the marrow, there are no lottos, entertainment establishments
and there is absolutely nowhere to spend money here either. This begs a comparison with Gorky Park in Moscow, where in order to go to the toilet, you need to defend
turn, and to eat - generally go through the quest and spend an unbelievable amount of money.

Lumpini Park opens at 4:30 am (unheard of!) and closes at 9:30 pm, which is also very late for parks, usually everything stops functioning in Thailand
at sunset, hours at 18:30-19:00.
There are many ways to get to Lumpini Park, for example, by the MRT underground metro, to the station - Silom or Lumphini.
Also here comes Skytrain skytrain, the desired BTS station - Sala Daeng and Ratchadamri.
The park is so huge that all these metros are within walking distance, you can just enter from a different entrance.

We got to Silom Station and crossed the road to the gates of Lumpini Park.

If you want to eat or drink (just like us), then I advise you to buy food and drinks at the entrance, because there will be nowhere to do it inside.

The park is kept clean and it is forbidden to walk dogs, drink alcohol, and litter.

What to do in Lumpini Park - monitor lizards and turtles

Having bought a couple of packages of cola and local go-dogs, we went in search of monitor lizards, because of course, Lumpini = monitor lizards are everything
known.
And if you don't know, I'll tell you. Many years ago, monitor lizards were brought here. Monitor lizards are harmless, in principle, creatures for people,
they shun the general public and do not lash out, walking by themselves.

After a while, the population of monitor lizards in Lumpini parks multiplied and these handsome men walked imposingly here and there, bringing
to delight the audience. Thick, unhurried, beautiful monitor lizards.
But one day, an unlucky monitor lizard climbed a tree, fell on an unsuspecting aunt who was under this tree
settled down. The aunt was frightened, the monitor lizard even more and tried with all his might to climb up the aunt higher, where he had fallen from.
The scratched aunt was upset and made a scandal. Most monitor lizards were taken out of Lumpini, so our walk was like a quest - find a monitor lizard.

Before we found the monitor lizard, we came across shy turtles. They stick their muzzles out of the pond onto the shore and crawl to the grass looking around, in search of food.
there is no question of any “pick up”, turtles are afraid of people.

The ponds in Lumpini Park are teeming with carps, it is forbidden to catch them here, but you can feed bread rolls. Therefore, carps are fat and happy.

Other things to do in Lumpini Park in Bangkok

As I wrote above, people come to Lumpini Park for peace and relaxation. Here you can not hear loud music, the noise of cars,
and happy mothers slowly roll strollers along the beaten paths.

A large playground makes walking children in Lumpini a pleasant experience. Playground with slides and swings, in the shade,
everything as needed.

Also in Lumpini Park you can ride a catamaran swan for 30 and 40 baht (larger) and a kayak.

People come to Lumpini to run, play sports in the local outdoor gym,

Light option for beginners:

And the hard version for the advanced audience:

You can ride a bike in the park from morning until 3 pm. After that, the owners of the bikes simply park them at the entrance to the park and walk with their legs.

I also noticed that Lumpini Park has not only a tennis court, but also a swimming pool! Nobody wrote about it, but there is a pool and you can swim in it,
that in such heat (and it is always hot in Bangkok), very handy.
Details can be found on the territory of the fitness club, it is next to one of the entrances to the park, not far from the red Chinese pagoda.

Lumpini Park - flora and fauna

In addition to frightened monitor lizards and turtles with fish, in Lumpini

a lot of all living creatures - beautiful birds, cats and dogs,
fruit trees and bushes grow around, here I first saw a real pomegranate!

I summarize as follows: Lumpini Park in Bangkok, a great place to relax and walk with children, family, we recommend!

How to save money on a hotel or apartment on vacation?

I'm looking on the Rumguru website. It contains absolutely all discounts on hotels and apartments from 30 booking systems, including booking. Often I find very profitable options, it turns out to save from 30 to 80%

How to save on insurance?

You need insurance abroad. Any admission is very expensive and the only way not to pay out of pocket is to choose an insurance policy in advance. For many years we have been making out on the site that give the best prices It takes only a couple of minutes for insurance and selection along with registration.

I already wrote once about a small one that is located in the historical part next to the complex and Wat Pho. So, its enlarged copy is Lumpini park. Although, of course, it would be more correct to call Saranr a copy of Lumpini, and not vice versa :)

It is strange that I have not visited it before ... Although I have the answer to this question. In terms of attractions, there is perhaps nothing special in it, except for monitor lizards (but it's worth it), but in terms of living in the city, this is a great place for sports and leisure. In general, I got the impression that you can do whatever you want in it, almost live.

By the way, if you want to find a hotel nearby, it’s convenient to choose on RoomGuru. I have stayed in Bangkok many times and in different hotels. I will not provide links to all my reviews, I will give only a few. – convenient for stopping near the airport and metro, – a good place for an overnight stay next to Khaosan, located in the center next to the park.

monitor lizards

I went to this park primarily to see monitor lizards, since I had never seen monitor lizards before (for some reason, there are no monitor lizards in Moscow parks). There turned out to be a whole kingdom of them, but you need to look for the water, basically they all sit there or swim for their own pleasure. I don’t know if they are dangerous, but there was a moment when the monitor lizard got out of the water and hissed towards us. This specimen was the size of a small crocodile, about 2 meters long (including the tail), or even more. And I'll tell you, I felt somehow uncomfortable, I even jumped onto the bench instinctively. Seeing fear, the monitor lizard made sure that we realized that this was his territory, turned around and went back into the water.

In general, if you do not specifically come close to monitor lizards, then problems are unlikely to arise, these are not Komodo monitor lizards. And, as a rule, they run away when you come close to them. This one was just too proud...

Do whatever you want

Apart from monitor lizards, there are no more spectacular sights in Lumpini Park, but there is a huge space for sports, which, in fact, is what most people do here, and not only Thais. As soon as you enter the park, you immediately notice people in sportswear, some with a ball, some another round. There is even an outdoor swimming pool and a gym. In addition to sports, people walk, sit, lie down, play checkers, read newspapers, dance, and even work. If it were not for a night's sleep and the lack of cafes, one could live here.

Sit, watch, think...

There is a game in Thailand when a wicker ball is thrown over the net with your feet, called Takro. In fact, this is volleyball with your feet, a very dynamic game! How they hit him and don't miss is a mystery. There is also basketball with legs, so for me, as for a person far from sports, in general, it is complete unreality. But I watched this man (in an attempt to photograph him) for about half an hour somewhere - solid muscles and tendons, nimble such that the shutter speed was too long, it turned out blurry all the time.

Nothing in the body

Visiting Information

It is located next to the MRT Silom and Limphini underground stations, or next to the BTS skytrain stations Sala Daeng and Ratchadamri. But you can also get there by city buses, including from Khaosan Road (No. 47, 15). Although in the latter case, you can get stuck in traffic jams. In general, it is right in the center of the city, you can walk and walk to it if you are somewhere in those parts.

Admission is free, opening hours from 4.30 to 21.00, guarded by police. Here you can not litter, smoke (!!!), drink alcohol, walk dogs. Everything as it should be in an oasis of a healthy lifestyle. The only negative is that it is hot here during the day, and you need to be very well adapted to such a temperature in order to also play sports.

Map of Lumpini Park in Bangkok

Lumphini Park in Bangkok is a green oasis in the center of Bangkok - the most large park capital Cities. The name "Lumpini" was given in honor of the place where the Buddha was born (Nepal). The park was built in the 20s of the twentieth century, according to the decree of King Rama VI. The order of the ruler was executed, and today it is 57 hectares of recreation.

When there are holidays in Bangkok, events are held in Lumpini: a stage is set up, and performers of different nationalities perform on it. From time to time, dance evenings are arranged.

The most revered object of the park, the statue of King Rama IV (1851-1868). The foot of the statue is decorated with a scattering of fresh flowers. People worship the monument almost every day, offering bouquets of flowers as a gift.

Please note that in order to stand on the pedestal of the figure, you need to take off your shoes, as when visiting temples.

In the park locals doing: tai chi, yoga, meditation, a lot of runners and skaters. At 17-18 hours, free sports training is always held to cheerful music for everyone for free. In the evening, there are many more visitors who support a healthy lifestyle. Moreover, age is completely unimportant: you can meet both pensioners and very young children. On weekends, families come here and have picnics, sitting right on the lawns.

Two alleys lead into the depths of Lumpini Park: the first one leads to a lake with birds and fish. On the lake you can ride a catamaran, a boat (40 baht ($1.1) for half an hour + a deposit of 40 baht ($1.1)) and feed the fish, of which there are a huge number in the lake (food can be purchased on the spot for 10 baht). The second one leads to a lawn where, among the vegetation, there is a stage for performances, where shows are held on weekends and holidays.

There is also a small river in the park. On one of the banks there is a town for children, where they can frolic. There are various swings, sandboxes, ladders.

Nearby there is small lake, and a gazebo in the shade, where parents mostly relax, looking after their children. The only disadvantage of the Lumpini oasis is the heat of the day.

In the farthest corner from the entrance there is a meadow with rare species of trees and bushes. The name of each of the plants can be read on the plate. The Central Park in Bangkok also attracts the attention of tourists with the presence of monitor lizards. Look for them near the water. Sometimes they crawl up trees and watch everyone from above, so be careful.

In the park it is forbidden:

  • Come with dogs, even if they are muzzled and on a leash.
  • Smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages.

For violations of the rules of conduct in the park, you will have to pay a fine of 2,000 baht, about $60.
