Gaudi masterpieces, Barcelona

The Catalan capital has no shortage of merit: vibrant nightlife, long beaches and plenty of shopping make it one of the most popular tourist destinations Europe. However, its main pearls are undoubtedly the phantasmagoric buildings erected by the legendary Antoni Gaudí. The most visited of his creations (and, concurrently, the symbol of the city) is, of course, the still unfinished Sagrada Familia with its carved turrets and bizarre columns. Other must-see masterpieces by the architect are the Casa Mila apartment building and the gingerbread houses in Park Guell.

Pueblos Blancos, Andalusia

The snow-white villages that humiliate the hilly region in central Andalusia have not so long ago experienced a period of decline: young people left these farming settlements en masse, heading to work in large cities. However, now the villagers have clearly decided to attract more tourists and are busy restoring buildings and pavements. Narrow alleys winding between snow-white houses, old churches and grounds entwined with variegated flowers have regained their medieval charm. The most picturesque of the villages are Grazalema, Vejer de la Frontera and Arcos de la Frontera.

The Alhambra is an architectural and park complex located on a hilly terrace in the eastern part of the city of Granada in southern Spain. The Cathedral of Saint James is the Catholic shrine of Santiago Matamoros in the Galician city of Santiago de Compostela, where his relics rest. The largest pilgrimage center of medieval Catholicism, the final destination on the way of St. James. The historical part of the city, formed around the cathedral, is included in the list of World Heritage Sites.

The whimsical facades of the cathedral (all four are completely different) and the fractional decoration of the Churrigueresque towers are the result of the rebuilding of the temple undertaken by the Habsburgs and Bourbons in the 16th-18th centuries. The outer walls and interior of the temple are lavishly decorated with sculptures from different times, but mostly from the Middle Ages.

The very relics of the saint rest in a silver reliquary in a crypt that survived from the temple of the time of Alphonse the Great. In 1589 they were hidden from the English "anti-Armada", but so carefully that later it was not possible to find them. The relics were discovered only in January 1879; five years later, their authenticity was confirmed by Pope Leo XIII himself.

The main attraction of the cathedral is the censer suspended from the ceiling, the largest in the world - the size of a man. It weighs 80 kg and is rocked by eight attendants in crimson robes. This censer (known as botafumeiro) takes 40 kg of coal and incense to fill.
