Montenegrin beaches are very different: sandy, rocky, covered with pebbles (small and large), with slabs and stones. There are more than a hundred of them in a small area. There are beaches at hotels, there are municipal ones.
Most of the beaches are pebbly, while sandy ones make up about 1/3 of the entire beach area. There is a natural large sandy beach in Ulcinj, sandy bulk - at the island-hotel Sveti Stefan, in Milocer, Becici and in some other places. What they have in common is that they are always clean.
For cleanliness and the best ecology, Montenegrin beaches of Budva, Bar, Tivat, Herceg Novi, Ulcinj are marked with Blue Flags, because there is nothing close to them that would pollute the environment.
The coastal part of Montenegro is conditionally divided into three regions: the Budva Riviera, the Ulcinj Riviera and the resorts of the Bay of Kotor.
Budva Riviera
The Budva Riviera with the resorts of Budva, Bar, Sveti Stefan, Milocer, Becici, Petrovac, Sutomore and Rafailovici, where the largest number of beaches are located, is the most popular and sought-after region among tourists.
The beaches here are predominantly pebbly and sandy of various colors due to the content of various minerals in their composition. Among them there are rocky with rocky areas.
Budva with many daytime and nighttime entertainment (not without reason it is called the "Montenegrin Miami") is considered tourist center country and an ideal place for outdoor activities. This is where the majority of people who come on vacation go. Families with children may find this resort somewhat noisy (although this also depends on the chosen area of the city for living).
There are several beaches within the city limits of the crowded resort. This is the most crowded and popular Mogren beach in the season, divided into two zones by a picturesque rock with pebble and sandy areas with golden sand, which are connected by an underground passage, and Slavic Beach, which occupies almost the entire city coast.
Family tourists can look at the Guvantse beach, located on the southern outskirts of Budva on the way to Becici. Although it is considered relatively remote from the center, the beach leads in the amount of sun during the day, is considered the sunniest and is famous for its beautiful sunsets.
Kids will certainly enjoy soft sand and a comfortable entrance to the sea, emerald vegetation on the shore, warm and clear water. The beach is miniature - its length is only about 150 meters. It is not difficult to get to it: you can walk by walking, or you can use the wonderful mini-train that runs around Budva.
The resort of Becici, located next to the crowded Budva (4 kilometers away), is a real beach paradise. There are always a lot of people who want to relax here. Even not the lowest prices for accommodation in apartments do not scare away tourists (although, of course, they are more democratic than in Budva itself).
Families with children are captivated by the secluded location, the proximity of Tivat airport (13 km) and the best beach in the country, covered with small pebbles and golden soft sand, almost 2 kilometers long. There are no moorings here, so there is no danger from boats constantly scurrying back and forth.
Not far from Becici (1.5 km) is the village of Rafailovichi (10 minutes from Budva) with stunning nature, turquoise sea and Kamenovo beach, located in a sunny bay. It is covered with small and soft White sand and pebbles.
The uncrowded spacious Jaz beach in the vicinity of Budva (located in the village of the same name) is quite popular among tourists. It is a coastal kilometer strip of the purest sand, gradually turning into small pebbles, and then (closer to Budva) large pebbles, stones and a rocky coast begin.
The beach is quite long and along it there are a large number of private boarding houses, hotels, campsites and guesthouses. Visually, it is divided into a recreation area for nudists and an area for everyone else. Convenient for those who come to rest by car.
Between the beaches of Jaz and Ploce there is a sandy shallow Trsteno beach, convenient for swimming with kids. The beach is small, the sand is as fine as flour, but the water is clear. Smooth and gentle entry into the water. Located in a closed cozy bay. Tourists get from Budva by bus. Among the shortcomings - not very well equipped.
Ploce beach is the most remote from Budva (it takes about 20 minutes by bus). Located on a peninsula with access to the open sea. The coastline is mainly represented by slab terraces descending to the water. There is no sand at all, there is a small area with pebbles.
The entrance to the bathing places in the sea is conveniently organized by special stone steps or stairs. The bottom of the sea is pebbly. The water is crystal clear, beautiful coastal landscape with exotic plants (for example, you can find cacti on it). For small children, small pools and playgrounds are provided on the beach.
The beaches of St. Stephen and Milocer are expensive and prestigious vacation spots. If the budget allows, they can undoubtedly be classified as resorts ideal for a family holiday in Montenegro.
Sveti Stefan is a picturesque village, which is most often depicted on postcards with views of Montenegro, with the cleanest beaches, located on both sides of a narrow isthmus connecting the coast with the island-hotel, covered with small pebbles and pinkish-red sand, and a gentle entrance.
The resort can be conditionally divided into the island of Sveti Stefan, on which luxury hotels built on the territory of buildings of the medieval period are concentrated, and the village itself is a small fishing village connected by an artificial sand spit to the island, where you can find apartments, villas, a hotel on your budget .
The resort village of Milocer (from Budva - 6 km) is famous for its magnificent beaches, beautiful villas, tall pine trees and a park. Near the island of Sveti Stefan there is a small "Queen's Beach" and nearby another sandy beach "Milocer" (it is also called the "King's Beach").
With children, you can settle in a quieter place in the neighborhood - in Petrovac. Cozy quiet Petrovac without noisy nighttime entertainment is located in a calm picturesque place (from Budva - 17 km) with a mild climate, with hills overgrown with pine trees and olive groves, with clear water in the sea, with rocky islands visible in the distance with a miniature chapel.
The beaches of this resort (there are two of them - the main one, stretching for 2 km with a charming promenade, and at some distance the Lucice beach) are covered with small pebbles and reddish sand. A good entrance to the sea, but almost immediately (after 4-5 meters) the depth begins.
Lučice beach is more picturesque, with a more convenient entrance and very small, sand-like pebbles (on the main beach, in some areas, when entering the water, there are huge stones). On Lučice beach for children there is a sea water slide with a small pool carved into the stone. A little further (you can walk) - the beach "Buryalitsa".
In Petrovac, families with children like to stay in apartments (if you book them in advance, it turns out to be inexpensive). This resort is often recommended for families with children in Montenegro, also because it has a cozy and calm atmosphere, but not boring. A beautiful bay, rocky grottoes with secluded places for swimming, a medieval castle, an ancient fortress once built by the Venetians to intimidate sea pirates, a stunning pine grove - all this makes Petrovac a tempting place to relax with a child.
The resort of Bar also has good pebble beaches. But in the city itself, due to the busy water traffic (boats, cruise boats, yachts constantly run), swimming is not very comfortable. It is much more pleasant to do this in neighboring towns on sand and pebble beaches, which can be reached from Bar in a quarter of an hour.
The beach "Biserna obala" ("Pearl Coast") with fine sand with a mother-of-pearl hue is located in the town of Canj, just north of Bar. This is one of the famous beaches in Montenegro.
The beach "Zlatna obala" ("Golden Coast") with golden sand and alluvium of small pebbles (analogous to the Bulgarian "Golden Sands") belongs to the hotel. It is located in one bay near the city beach in Sutomore, protected from the winds by pines and cypresses from the mainland.
In a tiny bay between Bar and Sutomore, a secluded, small, picturesque "Red Beach" is lost. It got its name because of the sand that covers it and the reddish pebbles (a mixture of sand with crushed corals). This is a convenient place to stay with children. It is not crowded here, almost always warm and windless.
Among the shortcomings - it is located at a remote distance from the Bar and it is inconvenient to get (if not by car). Large sharp boulders also prevent entering the water. meet and sea urchins(although they are all over the coast).
Between the Sutomore and the backwater of Chan near the Black Cape is Malevik beach, mostly pebbly, rocky in places with large stones in the water (you can’t swim without slippers). Of course, it is not very suitable for a toddler. But here the water is unusually clear, and in the heat you can hide in the shade of nearby pine trees.
In the town of Utjeha, on the way from Bar to Ulcinj, there are also several small sandy beaches.
The beaches of the Ulcinj Riviera
The Ulcinj Riviera, represented by the only city - Ulcinj - is another region of Montenegro famous for its sandy beaches.
The Ulcinj resort with turquoise water in the bay and famous beaches with gray basalt sand is located in the very south of Montenegro. This resort is quite crowded, but not as much as in popular tourist places. It is also famous for its ecology.
Velika Plaža (Big Beach) stretches along the coast with a 13-kilometer sandy strip, along which there are many hotels. It was created as if specially for children: shallow sea, magnificent landscapes, healing fine sand enriched with minerals, a gentle entry into the water with gradually increasing depth. Among the shortcomings is the proximity to the port.
City Small Beach is located, as it were, inside the city itself. Here are concentrated local restaurants and cafes, shops and discos.
Near Ulcinj is the Tropicana beach, equipped with a children's amusement park and water rides.
A beach with healing coral and small-shell sand, extremely soft to the touch, the islands of Ada-Bojana is a continuation of the Big Beach, from which it is separated by a river. Nudists and surfers love to relax here on the island-reserve.
Resorts and beaches of the Bay of Kotor
The resorts of the Bay of Kotor, in addition to Kotor, include Tivat, Perast, Koshtanitsa, Risan, Herceg Novi.
The peculiarity of this region is that in the Bay of Kotor, cutting into the coast for 30 kilometers, there is no strong excitement at the sea, high waves and storms, dangerous strong currents, which makes swimming in the sea safe even for kids. The water in the bay is warmer. But the climate is quite hot.
In Kotor itself, the beaches are urban, where swimming with children is not entirely comfortable (not such a clean sea, stones and rocks). And in general, this expensive city is not the best place in Montenegro for beach holiday with kids. The beaches of the Hercegnovskaya Riviera are mostly rocky, which is not so comfortable for swimming, but they are more picturesque. It should also be borne in mind that rocky beaches are often chosen by sea urchins. However, sand and pebble beaches are also found in the Bay of Kotor, especially in the vicinity of Herceg Novi and Tivat.
The beaches of Tivat: Donja Lastva, Cape Selyanovo, Staraya Rachitsa, Kamelia are equipped with small city beaches with concrete slabs and sandy areas. On the "Island of Flowers" (from Tivat - 2 km) there are sandy beaches.
Good for children is the small sandy beach Plavi Horizonti in the Przno valley (12 km from Tivat at the Blue Horizon hotel), located in a calm, quiet bay, where the warmest days in Montenegro are all year round. Healing fine sand, shallow water, clear water, olive and pine green groves - all this attracts families with children.
Nearby is the beach in the town of Oblatno at the Almara Beach Club hotel with comfortable umbrellas and sun loungers, a landscaped park, and club parties.
Herceg Novi is a popular and lively resort in Montenegro, but less noisy and cheaper than Budva or Tivat. Suitable for families with children, although the beaches in this resort cannot be called the best. Very often these are concrete slabs, and sandy beaches need to be reached by boat, for example, to the reserved Lustica peninsula.
From Herceg Novi on a boat you can go to the beach in the uncrowded, beautiful and cozy town of Rose. Actually, there are no beaches as such: vacationers sunbathe on the embankment.
The beaches of Zhanitsa and Mirishta, located on the coast, are pebbly, which differ from most of the beaches of Montenegro in that they go directly into the open sea. From them you can admire the wonderful view of the fortress on the island of Maiula. You can get here from Herceg Novi by boat for a small fee.
Montenegro attracts with its cleanest beaches and many resort towns for different tastes and budgets. And not only this. The beauty of this country lies in the numerous bays and bays, the royal mountains, in the delightful nature, in the medieval architecture, historical monuments and unique culture.

Beach laws in Montenegro: cleaning and sunbeds
Montenegro is a country that lives solely on tourism. Therefore, the convenience of tourists here is treated as carefully as possible. Let's look at beach laws:
- The entire coastline is exclusively state property. There are practically no private beaches in Montenegro.
- The state often rents out beaches, but the requirements for rented beaches are very serious.
- Cleaning on the beaches during the tourist season, according to the law, takes place every day. In reality - twice a day, in the morning and in the evening.
- No more than 50% of the beach area can be occupied by paid sunbeds. The rest of the place is for vacationers with a towel.
- On the territory of hotels, the entire beach can be filled with sunbeds, but then they are free.
- Entrance to any beach and access to the sea are free for everyone. You can not even build decorative fences.
These laws are rarely violated. And in exceptional cases: it is generally closed to visitors (you can only get there on an excursion or by booking a table in a restaurant), some of the beaches nearby are paid (you have to buy a sunbed), you can also get to the King's beach near Villa Milocer only by paying for sunbeds (70 euros for kit), and Queen's Beach is reserved for villa guests only. But all these exceptions apply only to some elite beaches for very rich people.

Budva Riviera
