Polish beauty, also ample opportunities for business, shopping and transit country status attracts many travelers. In terms of transport, Poland's international airports play an extremely important role, which confirm the importance of this European state.

The extent to which the "air gates" are developed, connecting any independent country with the outside world, to a large extent speaks about its attractiveness both for tourists and for other categories of travelers who come there. Well-developed communication, including by air, coupled with modern infrastructure are the basic conditions for the attractiveness of a particular destination for foreigners.

There are many airports in Poland, but only a few of them have international status and serve flights to other countries. Based on which airlines they work with and what is the seasonality of arrivals / departures by months of the year, there are 3 main categories of Polish airports:

  • Serving both traditional and low-cost airlines on a year-round basis.
  • Those that work exclusively with low cost airlines (Ryanair, Wizz air, Easy Jet, Norwegian and others).
  • Having a seasonal schedule and receiving charter flights.

With the integration into European structures, Poland became an increasingly open and developed country in terms of foreign transport links. Today, there are 16 airports in the country (see the map below) that receive and send foreign flights on a regular or seasonal basis. Let's dwell on the main, largest "air harbors" in a little more detail.

Warsaw-Okecie

This capital airport, named after the composer Frederic Chopin, is the main airport in Warsaw today. It is here that flights from Russia, Belarus and other CIS countries arrive and depart from here.

Good to know! Among the airlines that fly to Lotnisko Chopina from the CIS countries, we should mention Aeroflot, Belavia, Polish Lot.

If at the time of its construction "Okecie" was located outside the city, today it is within the city limits, however, it is located on the outskirts of the city center. You can get there not only by taxi, but also by public transport, taking buses 175 or 188 in the very center, near Warszawa Centralna. In addition, for the additional convenience of passengers, the night route 611 was introduced. From the railway station you can get to Okecie and by train. Important information:

By the way, both metropolitan airports are connected by shuttle routes, along which both buses and electric trains run. The ticket price is quite affordable and is only a few dollars, in terms of American currency.

Interesting to know! Modlin Civil Airport was built on the site of a former military airfield.

The terminal is noticeably simple, but it has everything you need. In short, a typical secondary air hub of a large city, in which low-cost airlines are mainly served, in this case. Information for travelers:

The proximity of both cities has led to the fact that from the airport Katowice-Pyrzowice (Port lotniczy Katowice-Pyrzowice) there is a bus network that goes both to Katowice and to Krakow. From here you can get to the famous tourist placeslocated nearby.

As we can see, in different Polish cities, in addition to numerous domestic flights, there is a significant flow of passengers who fly abroad or arrive from there. Understanding how many airports in Poland with international flights, we can make a clear conclusion that this is an open country, favorable for travelers, business people and working abroad.

It is believed that airports determine the status of a country, and the more there are, the higher the status. This also allows us to characterize the state in terms of tourist attractiveness, investment, interest in it from other countries. Taking into account all these factors, it can be argued that Poland is a very popular and visited country, since there are twelve air terminals of international importance on its territory. As a result, the country is actively developing business, various international projects, cooperation with the EU.

Not all of the twelve airports are equal in terms of importance and number of passengers. The largest airport is Warsaw Okecie, and the youngest is Lublin, which has just begun to develop actively.

History of the air services market

In Poland, the construction of airports began at the beginning of the 20th century, but then airfields received exclusively military aircraft. Civil air travel was practically undeveloped, and only very wealthy people could purchase the coveted ticket for the winged aircraft. Many airports were improved during the First and then Second World Wars. This was necessary to create air bases and warehouses with food and ammunition. The development of infrastructure meant the construction of roads and runways, weather stations, terminals.

Reconstruction and expansion

Significant changes in the air services market took place with the advent of capitalism. The transition to "market rails" required the development of all spheres of life, including aviation. Therefore, airports began to expand and increase in number. During the same period, two forms of ownership of air terminals were established - state and private. This contributed to the rapid development of industry and the construction of international terminals.

At the beginning of 2000, the Polish government adopted a state program for the development of airports, which included the reconstruction, repair and restoration of buildings, runways. As part of the program, military bases in cities such as Szczecin, Lodz, Gdansk, Bygdoszcz, Wroclaw, Modlin and others were closed. Central airport the country in Warsaw, called Okęcie, began to gradually expand. In addition to state aid, the following factors had a significant impact.

Firstly, private companies enter the market. Secondly, the abolition of the monopoly on the air travel and air transportation market. Third, the creation of joint stock companies in certain cities to revive the aviation business. Fourth, the emergence of low-cost airlines, both national and European, Asian, Turkish.

Fifth, an increase in the number of people who began to use the services of companies, preferring to travel not by trains or buses, but by planes.

Sixth, Poland's accession to the European Union has attracted additional investment in the air services market. In particular, such large low-cost airlines appeared as Wizz Air (Hungary), Ryan Air (Ireland), Austrian Airlines (Austria), Finair (Finland), Turkish Airlines (Turkey). Many companies, given the geographical location of Poland, sought to open their aircraft bases here. This has become an additional source of income for airports and the country's budget.

It is this market segment that has become decisive in the development of airports in Poland. Since the Poles, joining the EU, did not have a very high level of per capita income. Therefore, they constantly left to work in other countries. Those who decided to travel around Europe or the world began to actively use international flights.

Seventh, strong ties have been established between the cities, thanks to the creation of a modern aviation infrastructure.

Eighth, the implementation of charter flights through the reception of international or European companies, and the development of its own market.

A new stage in the history of airports was the country's victory in the competition to host the European Championship in 2012. Then, together with Ukraine, Poland got a chance to host a serious football championship, which promised to attract additional investments to the country, expand the geography of tourism and popularize the country in the world.

The government of the country used the chance to the maximum. The country's air gateway in Warsaw received a new international terminal, which receives several million passengers a year. The same terminals appeared in other cities, even in such small ones as Szczecin, Wroclaw, Bygdoszcz, Olsztyn, Rzeszow or Przemysl.

Airports

It is located in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, located in the north of the country. The most major cities, whose population uses the services of the airport are Torun and Bygdoszcz. The location for the airfield was chosen precisely in the latter, which is explained by the presence of a military aircraft base and a runway. The air gate to the north is named after the famous Polish pianist I.Ya. Paderewski. It is only three and a half kilometers from the airport to the city center, so public transport runs here regularly. The intervals between buses are about half an hour, although you only need to drive a few kilometers.

Built in order to partially relieve passenger traffic at the main airport of the country, Okecie. It is located just forty kilometers from the center of the state capital. Charters and low-cost airlines are redirected here, but this absolutely did not save the Warsaw air terminal. After Euro 2012, the number of tourists increases every year, as well as those who use low-cost flights for business, study or work. In addition, the number of vacationers who try to fly by charters is constantly growing. This helps to fly to such distant countries as Tunisia, Egypt, Israel.

There are several ways to get to the airport from the city: by bus, train, or with a friend by car. Taxi is not recommended due to the long distance and high price - from 119 to 250 PLN.

By car From the center of Warsaw, the journey will take from 45 minutes to an hour, personally I would recommend planning for 1.5 hours - sometimes you can run into repair work, because of which a traffic jam can arise as early as 6:30 in the morning. Plus, you'll have more free time to park your car and look around. You can park your car in a private parking 5 kilometers from the airport or directly near the airport, in the first case you will save a little money, but spend time - you will be taken to the airport for free, in the second case you will pay more, but it will be much more convenient, usually I I choose parking near the airport.

By bus Warsaw-Modlin Airport can be reached from the Central Station and the Młociny metro station, the cost of a one-way trip is about PLN 30. Remember, the only official carrier is ModlinBus, on the carrier's website http://www.modlinbus.pl you can buy tickets online and plan your journey. By train from Warsaw you will get to the railway station in Modlin within 45 minutes, a special bus runs from the railway station in Modlin to the airport, the total cost of a one-way trip will be no more than 18 PLN. 42 trains run between railway stations, of which 14 are special dedicated trains.

By car travel will not cause big problems, use the navigator in the car, and additional signs on all main streets will simplify the task. Ride on taxi from the city center to the airport will cost you approx. 40 PLN, I can recommend SAWA TAXI, tel. +48 22 644 44 44 - they will definitely not cheat you there. I have tried to briefly provide information on every more or less significant airport in Poland. Due to the fact that the data may change, I recommend that you go to the website of the desired airport before starting to plan your trip - this will save time, money and nerves. I am not responsible for the accuracy of the information, but I did my best to keep it as current as possible. On the right, in the column, you can familiarize yourself with the current promotions of airlines, thanks to wonderful discounts, you can travel across Europe (and not only) with minimal costs.

Enjoy your travels.

What to do if your flight is canceled

If the flight is canceled more than 24 hours before departure, then passengers are transferred to similar flights of the airline. The costs are borne by the carrier, the service is free for the passenger. If none of the options offered by the airline suits you, most airlines can issue a "forced return". After confirmation by the airline, the money will be returned to your account. It can sometimes take several weeks.

How to check in at the airport

Online check-in is available on the websites of most airlines. Most often it opens 23 hours before the start of the flight. You can pass it no later than 1 hour before the departure of the plane.

To check in at the airport you will need:

    • the identity card specified in the order,
    • birth certificate when flying with children,
    • unsealed itinerary receipt (optional).
  • What you can take with you on the plane

Carry-on baggage is items that you take with you on board the aircraft. Weight norm hand luggage can vary from 5 to 10 kg, and its size most often should not exceed the sum of three dimensions (length, width and height) from 115 to 203 cm (depending on the airline). Ladies' bag is not carry-on baggage and can be carried freely.

The bag that you take with you on the plane should not contain knives, scissors, medicines, aerosols, or cosmetics. Alcohol from duty free shops can only be carried in sealed bags.

How to pay for baggage at the airport

If the baggage weight exceeds the norms established by the airline (most often - 20-23 kg), you need to pay for each kilogram of excess weight. In addition, many Russian and foreign airlines, as well as low-cost airlines, have tariffs that do not include free baggage allowance and must be paid separately as an additional service.

In this case, baggage must be checked in at the airport at a separate Drop-off check-in counter. If you are unable to print your boarding pass, you can get it at the airline's regular check-in counter, and check in and drop off your baggage there.

Where to find out the time of arrival if you are a greeter

You can find out the time of arrival of the aircraft on the airport's online scoreboard. The Tutu.ru website has an online scoreboard of the main Russian and foreign airports.

You can find out the number of the exit (gate) on the arrival board at the airport. This number is located next to the inbound flight information.

The tourist attraction of the country is evidenced by its air harbors. If there are many airports, especially international ones, then we can conclude that this state is often visited by foreign citizens. And you can talk as much as you like about the development of the tourism industry, but if there are no air gates, no one will come to this country in our age of aircraft and high speeds. In this article, we will take a look at the airports in Poland. How many large ones are there? In which cities do you receive planes from abroad? We suggest that you familiarize yourself with this information. In general, we can say that Poland is an attractive country for tourists. Many travelers consider its air harbors as transit points for connections, which is also not bad - after all, airport taxes replenish the state budget.

The fare is nine zlotys (about 2 US dollars, i.e. approximately 115 Russian rubles at the current exchange rate) and 17 - by train. If you consider Warsaw as a transit point, arrive in Okecie and depart from Modlin (or vice versa), then you will be interested to know that these airports in Poland are connected by the bus route of the OKBus carrier and the railway branch of local trains.
