What to see in the city of Side itself

Side is a picturesque city 75 km west of Antalya. In ancient times it was surrounded by fortress walls, which are still preserved in good condition. Your holiday in Side will be rich and exciting if you prepare for the trip in advance. For example, find out where the main city attractions are located and how much money you need to set aside to visit them. So, where to go in Side itself?

If you want unconventional excursion programs from guides, then you can read my article about unusual ones that local residents organize for you.

One of the city's main attractions is located in the historical district of Side. Date of construction: III century AD. Today, only a small part of the once large-scale structure has survived. Scientists are sure that the temple was previously divided into several equal parts. The main room had standard proportions, measuring 7 m by 17 m. It stood on a high podium.

A staircase of several steps led to the interior. The central entrance was decorated with tall columns, with red granite at the base. Look for the remains of a temple near Gavani Street. The Roman Theater is located nearby. Admission is free and open 24 hours a day.

Another interesting and ancient attraction is the Temple of Apollo. Built presumably in the 2nd century AD. It suffered greatly after the earthquake that hit the city in the 10th century. The temple is protected at the state level. According to the documents, the building had a rectangular shape.

It was surrounded on all sides by rows of columns. Today we can see only five intact columns, each reaching a height of almost 9 m. The upper part of the temple was decorated with bas-reliefs in the form of jellyfish heads and floral ornaments.

The Temple of Apollo is located on the shore Mediterranean Sea, in the southwestern part of Side. You can look at it at any time of the day or night and completely free. After sunset, beautiful lighting turns on here. Part of the attraction is fenced off.

Temple of Apollo in Side

An excellent example of Roman heritage, a “relative” of the immortal Colosseum, is the Turkish amphitheater in Side. For a long time it served as an arena for brutal gladiatorial fights involving wild animals. Construction began in the 2nd century BC. The building was designed for 16 thousand spectators.

The stage occupied two levels. It was decorated with beautiful statues, columns and bas-reliefs. Initially, they were going to show theatrical performances here, only later did the idea come to turn the arena into a place for fights between animals and people. In the 6th century, the building was used as a temple, then it was subjected to earthquakes and countless wars.

Today, the amphitheater hosts musical and theatrical performances and excursions. The rows, galleries, central entrance and stage are in good condition.

Entrance to the amphitheater costs 30 Turkish liras (about 330 rubles). Opening hours: from 8:00 to 17:30.

The monumental architectural structure was erected in honor of mythical creatures - Nymphs. Water was supplied to the fountain by an aqueduct built from the Manavgat River. They say that all the inhabitants of the city quenched their thirst from it.

Look for this attraction in the northeastern part of the city. Nearby is the central city gate. The fountain was built on 3 floors. Its height is 5 m, width – 35 m. Today, 2 floors have been preserved in good condition. The sides are decorated with marble and complex patterns. Some elements have been moved to the city museum.

Agora

In the ancient Greek period, the Agora was the name given to the central retail space. Not only was trade conducted on it, but important issues in the life of the city were also resolved. The Agora housed tents, temples, and craft workshops. It was surrounded by a fence along the perimeter and decorated with columns and pilasters.

In Side, a square built in the 2nd century BC is still preserved. It had a quadrangular shape, the total area was 90 m². There was a Tyukhe temple and a public toilet with 24 seats - laprina. The temple was erected in honor of the goddess of luck, the patroness of the city of Tyukhe.

Getting to Agora by public transport is inconvenient, but possible. Nearest bus stop stands at a distance of 3 km from the attraction. It's called SideOtogarı. Regular bus No. 639 goes here. From the stop, go in a south-west direction. Entrance to the Agora territory is free and 24 hours a day.

The archaeological museum is located in the historical district of the city, near the amphitheater. It consists of 4 halls. The first contains rare bas-reliefs of the Hellenistic period, a collection of sundials, and sacrificial paraphernalia. The second room contains sculptures from the Roman period. The third is statues, inscriptions, torsos. In the fourth hall there are ancient Roman tombs, statues of gods, portraits of kings.

You can touch the exhibits with your hands and take pictures against their background. The museum itself is set up in ancient Roman baths. The guides begin their stories with an excursion about the importance of Roman baths for society. By the way, the excursions are educational and inexpensive. Admission ticket– 10 liras (≈110 rubles). Opening hours: from 9:00 to 17:00.
