I tell you about the best attractions and the most interesting places ah Cyprus, which I have already traveled up and down several times. This is not just another selection of places pulled from the Internet, but carefully and personally researched locations. These are cosmic views and panoramas, ancient monasteries in the mountains and the most picturesque and unusual villages and the best beaches of Cyprus.

I would return to each of these places without hesitation and return more than once. You can spend a whole day in each place, each place is unique and has no analogues in Cyprus. By visiting all these attractions you can get the most complete picture of Cyprus, the nature of the island, beaches, mountain villages and monasteries. You will already see the cities of Cyprus, so they are not on the list.

There is not a single pass on the list; I went to each of the places and attractions listed below and traveled far and wide.

I am making this list in order to help those who want to skim off the cream of their trip, see all the coolest things and devote the rest of their time to passive relaxation on beaches and bars. By the way, beaches are also on this list.

For convenience and clarity, we will move from southwest to southeast and finish at Northern Cyprus. You can also connect all these places and get a beautiful driving route around Cyprus.

1| Avakas Gorge

A more picturesque place with wildlife for a short walking track in Cyprus it is difficult to find. Avakas is very reminiscent of the canyons and gorges of the wild west of the United States. At first you walk through a picturesque forest between majestic rocks. After only half a kilometer, the rocks narrow overhead and it becomes somewhat eerie - there is a stream and slippery stones under your feet, water oozes through the black rocks from above, birds of prey fly overhead.

Avakas gorge

How to get there and where is the Avakas gorge

From Paphos you need to go in the direction Coral Bay beach along the road which is Agios Georgios, then you pass the sign for the Paphos Zoo, follow the same road along the sea and find yourself in a parking lot where you need to leave the car and continue walking to the entrance to Avakas gorge walk, approximately 1 kilometer from the parking lot. The distance from Paphos to the Parking lot is approximately 20 km.

You should know that the gorge is closed during rains. Entrance to the gorge is free. For a visit Avakas Taking into account the road from Paphos and back, it is worth planning at least 3 hours.

2| Aphrodite's Trail and the Akamas Peninsula

The coolest place with virtually untouched nature in Cyprus, occupies the entire southwestern tip of the island of Cyprus and represents natural Park protected by the state. The most convenient way to get here is from Paphos and Polis.

I consider the Aphrodite trail to be the most striking place on the Akamas Peninsula, which intersects with the Adonis trail and runs through the most picturesque places of the coast and through the forest. It starts near the village of Lachi, from there there is a sign to the baths of Aphrodite - that’s where you need to go.

3| Kykkos Monastery

I thought for a long time whether or not to include this monastery in the list of the best places worth visiting in Cyprus. On the one hand, the place is too popular and touristy, on the other hand, it is a large historical and architectural monument, and most importantly, there is a picturesque road leading to it. Mountain road and small but eye-catching sights along it.

Kykkos Monastery

You can get to Kykkos from Paphos, from Polis or Limassol, the distance from Polis to Kykkos is 60 km, from Paphos and Limassol to the Kykkos Monastery - 70 km. In all cases, you need to travel for at least 2 hours, and taking into account stops in beautiful places and on observation platforms- at least 3 hours. Therefore, feel free to plan 2.5 – 3 hours for the journey there and 1.5 hours for the journey back. You need to leave as early as possible in the morning in order to have time to get to the monastery before the arrival of organized tourist groups and pilgrims. Usually people gather at 10:30 - 11:00 am and the tourist hell. If you want to see a monastery like the one in the photo above, you should arrive in Kykkos at least by 9 am and leave no later than 6 am, or better yet, earlier.

Entrance to the monastery is free, parking is also free.

4| Kakopetria village

This Cypriot village was a discovery for us and an absolute must visit place in the Troodos Mountains. Of interest is the old part in the center - Old Kakopetria, which is a labyrinth of intricate cobbled streets above a rushing river. You need to walk both along the old part and down along the river - there is a walking route and a mini-embankment that starts from the old mill.

Getting there is not difficult, but be prepared for picturesque serpentines - the village lies high in the mountains. The closest is Limassol, only fifty kilometers and a little over an hour’s drive.

You need to leave early in the morning and plan at least one day for the entire trip and this will be one of your better days in Cyprus, believe me.

5| Lefkara village

A regular on many routes around Cyprus and a must-see for tour operators is the village of Lefkara. Besides the village aspect with the obligatory stone streets and beautiful Cypriot house facades and churches, Lefkara produces handmade silver and lace, which is also made by hand.

The easiest way to get there is from Larnaca, less than an hour's drive along easy serpentines and an excellent road. Lefkara is worth spending at least two to three hours and is worth combining with the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia, or the villages in the surrounding area.

The most convenient way to get to Lefkara is from Limassol or Larnaca.

6| Nissi Beach

8| Cape Greco

This is already the southeastern part of the island, also a natural park, although it is more accessible to visit than. On extreme point There is a military base and there’s not much to see there. I would recommend taking the walking trail from Blue Lagoon before churches Agioi Anargiroi and further along the same path to beautiful beach Konnos scourge. Get both visual and physical pleasure from contemplating the rocky shores, azure water and flowers. Flowers are really only in spring, March April and I consider this time of year the best to visit Cape Greco.

9| Medina of Famagusta

Famagusta- This is the northern part of Cyprus, which the Turks grabbed from the Cypriots. I will write more about this place later, but for now I recommend the city center - the medina, surrounded by a fortress wall, inside which all the churches, mosques and streets are located. Part architectural monuments destroyed, but they all together make up quite significant object for visiting. There are also several good restaurants and cafes for a snack or lunch overlooking the old city.

I think Famagusta a must-visit place when compiling routes in Northern Cyprus.

Before Famagusta The most convenient way to get there is from Ayia Napa, it’s best to build from there. The entire route will take at least a whole day.

10| Embankment and fortress of Kyrenia

Kyrenia– another fortified city that is a must-see in Cyprus. It is truly impressive - a very well-preserved medieval fortress on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, a nearby harbor for yachts and boats (marina) and a cool view of the city skyline. There is an embankment along the fortress - the best place for evening walks at sunset. I would recommend spending the night in Kyrenia, there are plenty of inexpensive hotels and apartments there. IN surroundings of Kyrenia there are three more fortresses in the mountains - Buffavento, Kantara and St.Hillarion, as well as several noteworthy beaches.

It is impossible to travel around Cyprus even in a month, despite its size, but I have collected the best of the best on this page - it’s true.

How to rent a car inexpensively in Cyprus

We rent a car on the Myrentacar website, which brings together most local rental companies. The prices are good, 24/7 Russian-speaking support, I have used them 6 times in three years. There are no complaints, the conditions are stated transparently, so you can always find an acceptable option.

How to buy cheap air tickets to Cyprus

One of two international airports Cyprus - Larnaca, which has many direct flights from Moscow, Kyiv, Riga, Tel Aviv and other cities. You can choose a flight and buy cheap air tickets on the website aviasales.ru. I recommend checking the availability of cheap air tickets using the low price calendar.

Transfer from the airport in Cyprus

Cyprus– top summer direction and taxi drivers at the airport often raise prices for their services. In addition, most of them do not have child car seats. It is not installed because it takes up the seat of an adult passenger. Because of this, tourists with children have to run around the airport looking for a free car with a child car seat.

Both problems can be solved very simply. Transfer, both individual and group, is possible. There you can also choose the option with a child seat. You won’t have to overpay taxi drivers and there will be no problems with the safety of children.

Everything happens very simply. Afterwards, you will be met by a driver with a sign with your name written on it. Immediately after leaving the arrivals hall, you get into the car and drive to your hotel.

How to find an inexpensive hotel or apartment in Cyprus

I use the trusted Booking.com and aggregator site RoomGuru (HotelsCombined). Choice of accommodation, even for such a small island as Cyprus, on these resources is huge, but I recommend booking in advance - the best options are sold out a couple of months before the high season (July-August).

Cyprus is one of the most sought-after and popular beach destinations. On this wonderful island the sun shines more than 300 days a year, the swimming season lasts almost six months from May to October. The tourism industry of Cyprus is fully and comprehensively developed - guests are invited to stay in luxury 5* hotels on the first coastline, in more affordable 4* and 3* or in economical apartments.

Cyprus resorts will suit all types of travellers. Groups of young people prefer the stylish and energetic Ayia Napa, where after daytime sunbathing you can party in the nightclubs. For families with children, Larnaca or Limassol are more preferable - the hotels in these cities have excellent animation and entertainment for the little ones. For people who regret secluded and have a relaxing holiday Quiet and romantic Protaras would be an excellent choice.

Tourists from all over the world mainly visit the southern part of the island - the state of Cyprus itself. The northern part of the island is considered occupied by Turkish troops, but you can also get there and enjoy picturesque mountain views or swim in the clear Mediterranean Sea.

The Rich Heritage of Cyprus - A Brief Historical Background

Over its thousand-year history, which began in the pre-ceramic Neolithic era (10-6 thousand years BC), Cyprus managed to be both an independent state and a commonwealth of states, and part of all the great “Mediterranean” empires.

So, from the 15th to the 14th centuries BC there was an independent island state of Alasiya, the ruler of which was considered a brother Egyptian pharaoh. After the Trojan War, a huge number of Trojans fled to the island, conquered it and created nine kingdoms here that managed to exist until the 4th century BC.

In ancient times, Cyprus was first part of the Persian state of Ionia, then it was briefly captured by the city-republic of Athens, after which it again became part of Persia. At the end of the ancient period, it was conquered by Alexander the Great, who annexed the island to Hellenic Egypt (Hellenes is the self-name of the ancient Greeks).

Then it became part of the great Roman Empire, and after its collapse it went to Byzantium, within which it remained until 1191, when the island was captured by King Richard the Lionheart of England and his crusaders during the Third Crusade.

By the way, King Richard the Lionheart married in Cyprus - the marriage ceremony was held in Church of St. George, in Limassol (this is one of those monuments that is definitely worth seeing in Cyprus).

After the Great Rome, the island first went to the Venetian Republic for one century, then it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, after which it again became part of British Empire. It existed as a British colony until 1960 when Cyprus became independent. True, almost immediately the island was divided into two parts: the southern part, where Greek Cypriots mainly lived and still live; and to the north, where Turkish Cypriots lived and still live (a legacy of the Ottoman period).

According to legend, their pursuers overtook them in these caves and cruelly punished them, torturing and killing all their sons, but leaving the woman alive so that she could suffer from the fact that she could not save their lives. And so it happened, Solomonia spent days and nights in prayer over the bodies of her tortured sons until she died of grief and tears. If the scriptures are to be believed, this happened in 2nd century AD, when the Palestinian king Antiochus tried to eradicate Christianity in his kingdom using the most cruel methods.

TOP 12: Birthplace of Aphrodite - the legendary rock Petra tou Romiou

Another place near Paphos that attracts many travelers from all over the world is the rock (actually a cliff) Petra tou Romiou. According to legend, in ancient times, the earth goddess Gaia advised her son Kronos to castrate his father and the sky god Uranus. After Uranus did this, the blood and seed of castrated Uranus fell into the sea near the island of Cythera, and at this place the water foamed strongly, and from the foam into the sea after some time Aphrodite was born heavenly (there are two of them in ancient legends: heavenly Aphrodite and earthly Aphrodite, which is also called “vulgar”). However, she did not like the island of Kifare, and therefore the wind carried her to Cyprus, on the shores of which she ascended precisely in the place that is now called Petra tou Romiou.

Another legend says that the Achaeans came ashore on the same rock after returning from the Trojan War. But the modern name of the rock, which sounds like Petra tou Romiou (mountain of the Romans), comes from the Akrit hero Deginis, who was half Greek by blood (Romei). So, according to another legend, while he was on Toros, he threw down a huge boulder on the Saracens who attacked the island, and the place where this boulder fell was called the “rock of the Romans.” Note that next to the rock of Petra tou Romiou there is another rock called the Saracen Rock.

So, they are not particularly familiar with the geography of the island, its culture and legends. And if you consider that there is a lot involved in history and legends, then by choosing a “newbie” you risk ruining your trip.

To choose a good guide, follow these tips:

  1. Look for a person who knows not only Russian, but also English, Greek and Turkish. Professional guides know all local languages in order to communicate freely not only with tourists, but also with local residents.
  2. Look for a man with experience as a guide. This is usually noted in the guide’s questionnaire or the tour operator can tell you about it.
  3. Look for the one who loves this island and is interested in him. Such people are easy to notice by their constant attention to this topic and mentions of specific dates, names, titles and little-known names.
  4. Search apolitical person. You should not turn your vacation into conversations about politics, which migrants very often like to do when they want to indicate their agreement or disagreement with the actions of the Russian authorities in recent years.
  5. Look for someone who not ready to work for pennies. Professional services cannot be provided at a reduced price, even if you are best friends with the travel agent, hotel concierge or bus driver.
  6. Immediately indicate that you weren't taken shopping, markets and other “partner” points selling souvenirs, rugs, gold, etc.
