We did not plan our winter trip to the Altai Mountains in advance. The starting point of the road trip was the city of Novosibirsk, and the resting point was the Ayskaya Valley hotel near the mountain lake Ayya.

Preface

We did not plan our winter trip to the Altai Mountains in advance, since this route is more of a summer route for us, and in winter we prefer to vacation in warm countries. Perhaps that is why our spontaneous trip became exclusive and unforgettable.

The starting point of the road trip was our hometown Novosibirsk, and the hotel "Ayskaya Valley" near the mountain lake Aya, the village of Aya, was chosen as a holiday destination. The location was chosen based on the relative proximity to Novosibirsk and the price of the hotel, which was very attractive on the Buy Coupon discount website.

It is not our rule to travel far in one car; there should always be support and assistance in unforeseen situations on the road. Therefore, loaded into two cars, the six of us, in anticipation of unprecedented winter pleasures, hit the road.

Winter road to Altai

The beauty of a summer trip to Altai was familiar to us: excellent roads, which is especially pleasing on the highway, an almost straight path and regular signs all the way to Biysk. In winter, hitting the road was a little more scary: what if there were snow drifts or icing? How will the car behave on the highway in winter? But Altai did not disappoint - a smooth and clean road, cafes, gas stations... and a new winter mood for the entire 455 kilometers and 6 hours of travel. Our route.

About gasoline. With full tanks we set off from Novosibirsk, refueled in Biysk and a little later at a local gas station in the village of Aya. You don’t have a choice of gas stations here, although you can find familiar brands. Gasoline prices are slightly higher than in Novosibirsk. Large cities and towns along the way: Berdsk, Iskitim, Cherepanovo, Barnaul, Biysk. We traditionally made our first stop in Talmenka. Then we stopped in Biysk and Srostki.

Important: On the route from Barnaul to Biysk there are very few signs and many cameras, and there are also traffic police posts. The lack of signs should not be scary - the road is only straight! Rear seat passengers must wear seat belts during this portion of the journey. We were fined for this.

Apart from the penalty, the drive was pleasant and went relatively quickly.

Hotel

Following the map and navigator, we drove into the village of Aya and very quickly found our accommodation. This is a small but cozy hotel. All of our double rooms were well renovated, with comfortable beds and even their own unique style.

These are the decorations in one of the rooms

Convenient and spacious parking on site, a place for barbecue, a warm house - what else does an inexperienced winter tourist need? The bathhouse... it was somehow not very good here. Firstly, for some reason it took us half a day to heat the bathhouse, we didn’t drink the promised herbal tea in a very cozy and cold relaxation room, and the bathhouse itself was ordinary.

But there were very simple and tasty breakfasts. Pancakes and porridge are very tasty and nutritious. Once we ordered regular dumplings for lunch, but it was very useful in the cold weather.

Entertainment

Let's start with the most important and free thing - the piercing purity of mountain air and simply fabulous snow-capped mountains. We haven’t been to the Alps, but for some reason they were the ones we remembered.

The only things better than mountains are mountains

This was facilitated by cozy hotels in the style of European houses, and silence, and sparsely populated.

Here they are - alpine houses

We immediately went to Bald Mountain to ride cheesecakes (bagels, buns), but the mountain was already closed, and skiing was postponed until better times.

Sunset on Bald Mountain

Once we're on famous lake Aya, then the first destination is the lake! Here we walked across the ice to the famous gazebo, which is located in the very middle of the lake.

On strong Ai ice

We rode a dog sled near the lake, cuddled blue-eyed huskies, rode on a strange swing, got a little cold and went to the hotel to fry meat.

First time on dogs

What eyes!

The most restless of us, almost at dawn the next day, decided to enjoy the silence and went for a walk, where we met another Altai mammoth and many beautiful hotels.

They love mammoths in Altai

Manzherok and Sinyukha

Our next trip was to Manzherok - it was the best moment of our road trip. On a flat and clean road, we covered the distance from the hotel to the lake, 30 km, in less than 30 minutes, and here it is - a winter fairy tale. The hills here are not high, which is good for beginner skiers, but not very good for experienced skiers.

Timid steps on skis

And we also have professionals in our ranks!

There is a big mountain here too, but it was closed. There is also a ski lift and a completely safe ski slope. But the most important and exciting thing for us was the trip on the ski lift to Mount Sinyukha.

Forward to Sinyukha

We were lucky enough to visit Manzherok once in the summer; it was a very depressing sight: a dirty lake full of people. But what was revealed to us in winter... It is difficult to convey in words the splendor of a frozen reservoir, framed by mountains and forest. It is here that you understand what it means to be “breathtaking” from beauty; it seems that what is happening is unreal, that such beauty simply cannot exist.

And again the mountains...

A little to the side, and a different sky

On Mount Sinyukha there is a yurt with souvenirs and another " golden woman", the magic of which we did not feel, because we performed the wrong rituals.

And you just had to hold hands

Here are two incorrectly fused trees of different species (pine and birch), symbolizing love, and some other “shamanic” things.

Unusual trees

And here are the shamanic things

But the most important thing is the view that opens from the mountain. You feel like a bug among these huge mountains and all the natural splendor.

Lake in ice

The road down

When we returned to the hotel, it turned out that our young part of the travelers did not have enough extreme sports. That is why four brave tourists went to ride through the mountains on snowmobiles, which can be rented near the hotel. After this trip, we saw fear in even the most fearless “snowmobilers” - everyone’s adrenaline level went through the roof, there were a lot of impressions.

Bald Mountain and bun rides

The next day we went skiing from Bald Mountain. Again we arrived from our hotel in about 10 minutes and joyfully ran to ride on the buns that we had thoughtfully brought with us. But that was not the case - in order to ride your own buns, you had to pay 100 rubles apiece or rent local ones. What to do - pay and ride.

The mountain is quite high, there are three levels, you choose your height and go! Skating is quite safe, considering the danger of the most uncontrollable means - buns. But there was somehow not enough snow.

On the way back we couldn’t help but stop at the Medvezhiy Ugol hotel; we really liked the wood and stone decorations of the hotel. There was also a beautiful descent here - access to the Katun, which made its way among the snow-covered ice.

Boots for any feet

Turquoise Katun

After lunch we went to Novosibirsk. On the way back we often stopped to take pictures and once again capture the beauty; we really didn’t want to leave the Altai Alps.

And here she is really turquoise

And endless

The way home

Where to relax in winter in Altai? - I am asked this question more and more often. I'm glad about this! Finally, bright thoughts appear in people's heads. You can relax in Altai not only in summer, but also in winter. Is this interesting? My affirmative answer is Yes!

Of course, you won’t find big mountain hikes, spectacular horse riding routes or breathtaking rafting trips in winter, but winter Altai, this is a special world filled with tranquility and beauty. You need to relax in winter for the benefit of your soul, best with your family or in the company of true friends.

Now I will express my opinion based on personal experience. If you live far from Altai, have never been here and have only two weeks of vacation, then come! I am sure that you need to start getting acquainted with this mountainous country when it is warm. If you are a resident of neighboring regions or have been here in the summer, then you simply need to come to Altai in winter!

Where we go? What are we watching? How much do we pay?

In winter, there are only a few travel destinations in Altai. All of them are somehow tied to warm place placement . To be more objective and not shock you with prices, I am considering a period not associated with the New Year holidays. Even for me, pricing remains outlandish and the impudence of "tour businessmen" in New Year and the following week.

1. Lake Teletskoye.

The village of Artybash is a tourist cauldron where everything is mixed: the beauty of Lake Teletskoye, real sovereigns, delicious food, and of course active recreation. In winter (exception New Year holidays) this village is empty, prices for accommodation are falling, there are fewer people.

From entertainment:

Walking around the surrounding area. You can select up to 3 interesting places, where you can walk and return in a day.
- snowmobile rides. Short or long, it all depends on the wallet, but there is such a possibility.
- trip to the protected village of Yailyu. If you are the owner of your own all-wheel drive car, then you can safely go to this remote corner. Or book a tour in advance and go with a group.
- skiing! There is a lot of talk about this, the ski resort is open and working. Not everything there is very good, but as entertainment for one day it will do. There are rentals of skis, boards and snow tubes.

Siberian bathhouse with an ice hole. If you have never dived into icy water, you can start here.
- winter fishing on the lake. I'm not a fisherman, so I can't tell you in detail.
- photographing. The surrounding area of the village is a paradise for winter nature lovers. You'll have to walk waist-deep in snow, but it's worth it.

The average bill for accommodation and food is 1300 rubles. / day per person.

Distance from Barnaul 420 km.

2. Seminsky Pass

Automobile pass at an altitude of 1800 meters. A cult place for the local population and a good place for have a relaxing holiday. There are not a large number of bases here; more precisely, there are only a couple of them here. There are very few people.

From entertainment:

Cross-hike to the top of Sarlyk. In winter it’s a dubious pleasure, but especially desperate people go on snowshoes or skis. You can also go on a snowmobile.
- skiing. Everyone famous place for skiing or snowboarding. The trails are of medium length, suitable for beginners and “cautious” riders. In general, for those who are used to riding without fuss and fear of being hit.
- photographing. I’ll probably stop writing this point, for me this is the first lesson...

The average bill for accommodation and food is 1500 rubles/day per person

Distance from Barnaul 370 km.

3. Chemalsky district, village. Chemal

Popular summer anthill. Which in winter turns into an almost peaceful place. There is a reason for this. There's nothing to do here. It’s worth going here only if you have your own car. To get to the attractions you need to drive another 20 - 60 km.

From entertainment:

Auto excursion by personal transport to the Tykdelpensky Bridge. It’s hard to pronounce the name, but the place is actually beautiful. Narrow canyon of the Katun River, huge ice hummocks, steep. Along the way you can make stops in pairs attractive places and you definitely need to go to observation deck near the Chechkysh valley.

Hiking around the surrounding area. Well, what else is left to do? You can go to the former hydroelectric power station on the Chemal River, to the island of Patmos, climb one of the surrounding peaks and look at the world from above.
- walking tour to the Karakol Lakes. This is one of the exclusive ones. Not for all. And almost no one officially distributes such an offer in winter.

Average bill for accommodation and food - 1600rub./day per person

Distance from Barnaul 340 km.

4. Belokurikha

A resort city that has been awarded the title of “Best Resort of Federal Importance” since, in my opinion, 2012. That says it all.
It is expensive and rich here, but nevertheless there is something to do for a budget tourist.

From entertainment:

Sanatorium-resort treatment and recreation. For every taste. People come here for a long time and almost always return. Statistical data also screams about this; the occupancy rate of many sanatoriums remains consistently above 80%.
- skiing. Perhaps one of the very first ski resorts in Altai is located in Belokurikha. The trails are not big, but their quality is good.

Walks around the surrounding area. There is plenty to do here, including along specially equipped routes. You can keep yourself busy with walks for a couple of days.
- excursion to the Swan Sanctuary. A full-day trip to Lake Swan, in the Sovetsky district neighboring Belokurikha. Amazing place, where wild swans have been coming to winter for more than 30 years. The number of birds is amazing, and their cries can be heard even a couple of kilometers from the lake.

- excursion to the Siberian Compound. A huge area on which there is a hippodrome, horse and poultry yards, a museum with antique agricultural utensils, etc. But it’s not interesting to come here separately; it’s better to wait for one, which, by the way, takes place here almost every weekend.

Aquapark. There is such a miracle in a distant Siberian city. Fun for one day.

Average check for accommodation and food - 2500rub./day per person

Distance from Barnaul 230 km.

I finish my thought and sum it up.
Perhaps someone will say that I told and showed little. Yes, that’s true, Altai is huge, I’m sure that everyone who comes here will find a place to their liking. My story was about the most popular and accessible destinations.

Winter is not a reason to refuse to travel, especially since you will be sheltered and fed almost everywhere, but at your own expense =)

Winter holidays in Altai are not particularly diverse. But the fans winter species sports people will definitely find something to occupy themselves with. Until recently, there were only two skiable mountains in the entire Altai, but three years ago this area began to actively develop.

Ski resorts

Base in Gorno-Altaisk

Located within the city limits. There are several barracks-type houses for accommodation (8-10 beds per room, kitchen, bathroom). We went there with classmates, so such conditions did not bother us. Moreover, the price is very affordable. The only negative is the huge number of people from local residents, which are activated during the New Year holidays and school holidays. There is no crowding on the slope. Moreover, it abuts the river bank. In general, only hardcore extreme sports enthusiasts skied; the rest preferred sleds and bagels. Skis and snowboards can be rented.

Mountain "Veselaya"

Located in the village of Aya. The slope is small, more suitable for beginners. The rope tow lift operates intermittently due to unstable electricity supply (but this is a problem for the entire Altai Mountains as a whole). On the territory of the base there are several large heated houses and a bathhouse. Cottages are rented out entirely or room by room. The first option applies more to the New Year holidays. If you don’t have enough space on the base itself, don’t despair. You can always rent a house or room from local residents nearby; such advertisements adorn every second fence. The place is very picturesque; from the top of the mountain there is a panoramic view of the valley of the lower Katun.

Village Manzherok

The ski resort in Manzherok began to be built quite a long time ago, but was inactive for a long time. A couple of years ago the owner changed, and the base began to operate at full capacity. Two slopes of varying degrees of difficulty, two lifts: rope tow and chairlift. Equipment rental is available. By the way, you can ride the chairlift just like that, without skis, and use it to return down. Stunning views of the surrounding area and the legendary Lake Manzherok, sung by Edita Piekha. You can also stay in the village with local residents. On the territory of the tourist complex there are three mini-hotels and one economy-class hotel, a cafe and restaurant, and a bathhouse. By the way, the chairlift is open to visitors all year round, although at the height of the season you will have to wait in a long line to admire the surroundings.

Seminsky pass

At one of the highest points of the Chuysky tract there is the Seminskaya Polyana tourist complex, which is also a training base for Olympic skiers. This place was not chosen by chance: in a high-mountain climate, snow does not melt for a very long time, and its quality is ideal for such training. The slopes are always cleared and prepared, there are various jumps and slalom tracks. But beginners won’t be bored either: there are places for beginners and slides for sledding and bagel riding. We stayed in a barracks-style hostel with bunk spring beds. This was an ideal option for our student group. Of course, there are separate cottages and a hotel there. There is also a cafe, a disco, and several bathhouses on site. Our company rested there for a week, during which time we decided to go on a ski trip to Mount Sarlyk ( highest point Seminsky pass). To do this, we rented regular cross-country skis, which, among other equipment, are available in abundance at the rental point. The base is open all year round, with ski slopes from November to the end of March (depending on the weather).

Year-round hotels and resorts

Belokurikha resort town

It is located on the territory of the Altai Territory, but in a mountainous area. There are several large sanatoriums here, which can only be reached with a voucher. But even mere mortals can improve their health there after consulting a doctor. Radon baths are the main source of healing in this area. You can also drink water, but in moderation. Each sanatorium hosts events and has animators. In the resort part of the city the atmosphere is very calm. Squirrels are jumping everywhere and begging for treats. There is a small chairlift from which you can admire the surroundings.

Park Hotel "Health Resort Aya"

A large tourist complex on the shore of the lake of the same name. In winter, only the hotel itself is open, in which, in addition to entertainment program you can undergo some wellness procedures: baths, saunas, herbal teas, etc. It is possible to consult a doctor. There are discos and entertainment activities. If you are an extreme sports enthusiast, the mountain is just a stone's throw away.

Also in Gorny Altai there are many bases and cottages that are launched only on new year holidays. But places in such houses should also be booked a month and a half before the arrival date, because... It's always a full house at this time.
